Chapter 10 - The Man My Father Feared
Emily replayed the sentence.
“Why were you on that road?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“I was going to a meeting.”
“With whom?”
He looked at her.
“Your grandfather.”
Silence filled the room.
Daniel had told her he had never met Arthur Carter.
Technically, that remained true.
The meeting had never happened.
Arthur had contacted Daniel privately after learning Robert was trying to force a partnership.
He intended to give Daniel evidence of misconduct inside Carter Development.
Daniel’s accident occurred on the way.
Arthur died six months later.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t know whether it mattered.”
“It matters now.”
The board meeting began at ten.
Emily arrived with Daniel.
This time nobody laughed.
Harrison was absent.
Robert sat at the head of the table.
Caleb stood near him.
Patricia sat in the gallery.
Vanessa sat beside her.
At precisely ten, the corporate secretary confirmed Emily’s thirty-eighth-percent share transfer had vested.
Robert immediately proposed the Monroe merger.
Emily objected.
Then Daniel’s attorney distributed the recovered communications.
The room erupted.
Caleb denied everything.
Robert called the server stolen.
Then Harrison entered.
Everyone stopped.
He looked exhausted.
His attorney accompanied him.
Harrison sat.
“I’m cooperating with federal investigators.”
Robert’s face became stone.
Harrison admitted ordering the defective truck back into service.
He denied knowing Daniel would be on the road.
He admitted helping conceal the maintenance report after the crash.
Daniel listened without moving.
Emily watched his hands.
They trembled slightly.
She covered one with hers.
Harrison looked at him.
“I didn’t mean for you to get hurt.”
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“You meant to save money.”
Harrison lowered his eyes.
“That was enough.”
Robert tried to distance himself.
Then the video played.
His concealment was undeniable.
Several directors demanded his resignation.
Caleb moved toward the door.
Federal agents waited outside.
He was not arrested for Daniel’s crash.
He was detained for questioning regarding financial fraud and forged documents.
As he passed Emily, he whispered, “You think Hale saved you?”
Emily looked at him.
“No.”
That stopped Caleb.
“I saved myself. He respected me while I did it.”
Caleb was escorted out.
The shareholder vote was suspended.
Robert remained seated after everyone else left.
Emily approached him.
“Why?”
Robert looked suddenly old.
“I built this company.”
“Grandpa built it.”
“I made it matter.”
“And then you decided everyone around you was property.”
“I was protecting your future.”
“You forged my signature.”
“I was protecting the company.”
“You let me walk down an aisle toward a man sleeping with Vanessa.”
Robert looked away.
“That was wrong.”
Emily almost laughed at how small the words sounded.
Daniel waited near the door.
Robert noticed.
“You married him to punish us.”
Emily shook her head.
“That’s the saddest thing about you. You can’t imagine love that isn’t a transaction.”
She left.
Outside, Daniel asked, “Are you okay?”
“No.”
“Good answer.”
She smiled faintly.
They headed toward the elevator.
Then Patricia called Emily’s name.
She hurried after them holding Arthur Carter’s old leather case.
“I found another compartment.”
Inside was a key.
Small.
Brass.
Stamped with two characters.
Emily remembered the number on her father’s folder at the wedding.
“What does it open?”
Patricia shook her head.
But Daniel recognized the logo engraved beneath the number.
Denver Central Trust.
A private vault facility.
They drove there immediately.
Vault 47 had been paid in advance for twenty years.
The attendant placed the box in front of Emily.
She inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Inside lay one envelope.
On it, in her grandfather’s handwriting, were six words:
EMILY — OPEN ONLY WITH DANIEL HALE.
Daniel stared at her.
Emily broke the seal.
