Chapter 2 - The Man Who Knew My Name

Harper ran.

She didn't wait to see the face behind the opening service door.

Her heels struck the marble corridor so hard she nearly fell twice, but adrenaline carried her around the corner and into the crowded ballroom.

Music hit her first.

Then laughter.

Then the absurd sight of two hundred people celebrating an engagement that no longer existed.

Her engagement.

A towering cake stood beneath crystal chandeliers.

Gold letters displayed HARPER & CALEB behind the dance floor.

Harper almost laughed.

She had never seen anything look so cruel.

"Harper!"

Caleb.

She turned.

He pushed through guests toward her.

He still looked perfect.

Navy tuxedo.

Perfect hair.

Concern carefully arranged across the handsome face Harper had loved for four years.

If she hadn't walked into that upstairs suite, she might have believed him.

If she hadn't opened Dominic's documents, she might still have thought betrayal ended with Madison's lipstick on Caleb's mouth.

Caleb reached her.

"Where have you been?"

Harper stepped back when he tried to touch her.

"Don't."

People nearby began noticing.

Caleb lowered his voice.

"We need somewhere private."

"I've had enough private rooms tonight."

His expression flickered.

Only for a second.

But Harper saw it.

"Where did you go?"

"Why?"

"Because I've been looking everywhere."

"That's romantic."

"Harper."

She studied him.

"Who's Victor Hayes?"

Caleb's face emptied.

There.

Proof.

Tiny.

Immediate.

Terrifying.

"I don't know."

"Really?"

"Who told you that name?"

Harper's pulse accelerated.

She didn't answer.

Caleb moved closer.

"Listen to me. Whatever you think you saw with Madison—"

"I saw your tongue in my best friend's mouth."

A woman passing them gasped.

Caleb closed his eyes.

"Can we not do this here?"

"Why? Is public embarrassment inconvenient?"

"This isn't about embarrassment."

"No. Apparently it's about shell companies."

His eyes snapped open.

Harper had her answer.

Caleb grabbed her wrist.

Hard.

"Where did you hear that?"

"Let go."

"Who did you talk to?"

"Caleb."

"Answer me."

Harper's fear changed temperature.

This wasn't the man who apologized when he forgot to replace the milk.

His fingers tightened.

"You're hurting me."

Then another hand closed around Caleb's wrist.

"She said let go."

Dominic.

Harper hadn't heard him approach.

Neither had Caleb.

Caleb turned, and his complexion changed.

"Vale."

So he knew him.

Dominic's expression remained almost bored.

"Mercer."

Behind Dominic stood Marco and another man.

Guests were beginning to stare.

Dominic glanced at Caleb's hand.

"You're still touching her."

Caleb released Harper instantly.

Dominic looked at the red marks forming around her wrist.

Something dangerous entered his eyes.

Not explosive anger.

Worse.

Calculation.

Caleb stepped back.

"This has nothing to do with you."

Dominic looked at Harper.

"Doesn't it?"

Harper wanted to say no.

She wanted to tell both men to disappear.

Instead, she looked at Caleb.

"You used my identity."

"Harper, you don't understand."

"Then explain."

"Not here."

"Here is perfect."

Caleb's gaze moved toward Dominic.

"You showed her?"

Dominic said nothing.

Caleb's fear was becoming obvious.

"You're making a mistake."

Harper stared at him.

"I caught you cheating on me and somehow that's becoming the least interesting crime you've committed tonight."

"Madison isn't what you think."

"That sentence should embarrass you."

"She was helping me."

"With what? Quality control?"

Dominic turned his face away.

Marco coughed into his fist, clearly hiding laughter.

Caleb glared at them.

"This is serious."

"Then start talking."

Caleb leaned toward Harper.

"Your name was never supposed to be connected permanently."

Her anger vanished.

"What does that mean?"

"I was going to remove it."

"From the company you created in my name?"

"I needed a temporary holder."

"You forged documents."

"You signed them."

"You told me they were charitable donation papers."

Caleb's jaw tightened.

"Keep your voice down."

Harper looked around.

People were watching openly now.

Her mother stood near the cake, confused.

Madison had appeared at the edge of the crowd.

Harper saw her.

Madison immediately looked away.

Something about that reaction hurt more than Harper expected.

"Harper," Caleb whispered, "you need to leave."

"Why?"

"Because this place isn't safe anymore."

Dominic answered for her.

"Funny. I was about to tell you the same thing."

Caleb looked at him.

"You don't know what's happening."

"I know three million dollars disappeared."

Harper watched Caleb.

His face hardened.

"And you think I took it?"

"I think you know who did."

Caleb laughed nervously.

"Then you're wrong."

Dominic stepped closer.

"Convince me."

Caleb's eyes moved to Harper.

She understood immediately.

He wasn't afraid for himself.

He was afraid of what she might say.

"What did Madison do?" Harper asked.

Madison started moving away.

Harper saw it.

"Madison!"

The room quieted.

Madison stopped.

Slowly, she turned.

She looked beautiful.

Of course she did.

Red dress.

Perfect makeup.

The same gold bracelet Harper had bought her for her thirtieth birthday.

Harper walked toward her.

"Did you sign papers with Caleb?"

Madison shook her head too quickly.

"No."

Harper almost admired how bad the lie was.

"Your signature is on them."

Madison looked at Caleb.

That was enough.

Harper felt something break cleanly inside her.

Not painfully.

Cleanly.

The friendship was gone.

"How long?"

Madison's eyes filled.

"Harper..."

"How long were you sleeping with him?"

"That doesn't matter right now."

"It matters to me."

Caleb stepped between them.

"Enough."

Harper looked around him.

"How long?"

Madison whispered, "Eight months."

Harper stared at her.

Eight months.

Madison had zipped Harper into wedding dresses.

Eight months.

She had tasted cake flavors.

Eight months.

She had helped design invitations.

Harper nodded once.

Calmly.

"Thank you."

Madison started crying.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't."

"It wasn't supposed to happen."

Harper smiled without humor.

"Neither was me entering Dominic Vale's meeting."

Caleb's entire body went still.

"Harper."

She looked at him.

"What?"

He moved closer.

"Do not say anything else."

Dominic appeared beside Harper.

"She can say whatever she wants."

Caleb ignored him.

"Harper, I'm trying to protect you."

"From whom?"

Caleb looked over her shoulder.

Harper followed his gaze.

A man she had never seen stood near the ballroom entrance.

Gray hair.

Expensive black coat.

Heavy gold ring.

Victor Hayes.

Harper recognized him immediately from the photograph.

Victor smiled.

Not warmly.

Caleb whispered, "Oh, God."

Victor walked toward them.

The crowd naturally opened.

He looked like a businessman arriving late to a charity dinner.

Nothing more.

Until people noticed Dominic.

Then the atmosphere changed.

Victor stopped six feet away.

"Dominic."

"Victor."

Victor glanced at Harper.

"Miss Foster."

She had never met him.

Yet he knew her.

Harper's mouth went dry.

"Do I know you?"

"Not personally."

Caleb stepped forward.

"Victor, she isn't involved."

Victor's smile faded.

"Then why is she standing beside Dominic Vale?"

Nobody answered.

Victor studied Harper.

"You've had an upsetting evening."

She resisted looking at Madison.

Victor continued.

"I'm sorry your celebration was ruined."

"You know about that too?"

"I know many things."

Dominic's voice chilled.

"You're done talking to her."

Victor smiled again.

"Is that your decision?"

"Yes."

"Interesting."

Harper looked between them.

The room no longer felt like her engagement party.

It felt like territory.

Dominic's.

Victor's.

And somehow, because Caleb had used her identity, Harper was standing directly in the center.

Victor turned toward Caleb.

"You were told to keep her uninvolved."

Caleb swallowed.

"I did."

"No," Victor said. "You failed."

Harper's stomach tightened.

She looked at Caleb.

"What exactly did you do?"

Caleb's eyes met hers.

For the first time that night, he looked genuinely ashamed.

"I borrowed your name."

"For what?"

"Harper—"

"For what?"

Victor answered.

"To move money."

Harper stared at him.

"Your money?"

Victor smiled faintly.

"Sometimes."

Dominic interrupted.

"Where's the three million?"

Victor's smile disappeared.

Caleb looked at Madison.

Madison began trembling.

Harper noticed.

Dominic noticed too.

"Madison."

She shook her head.

"I don't know anything."

"Nobody asked you a question yet."

Madison's face went white.

Marco moved toward the ballroom doors.

Victor's men—Harper now realized several guests near the entrance weren't guests—shifted subtly.

Dominic raised one hand.

Everybody stopped.

"Not here."

Victor nodded.

"Agreed."

Harper felt absurdly grateful that criminals had manners at engagement parties.

Caleb leaned toward her.

"Go home."

"Your text told me not to."

Caleb frowned.

"What text?"

Harper pulled out her phone.

She showed him.

CALEB: Harper, don't go home.

His face changed.

"I didn't send that."

Her blood chilled.

"What?"

"I sent the first two messages."

Dominic took the phone gently from her hand.

He examined the screen.

Then the photograph.

His expression hardened.

"Someone photographed her inside my room."

Marco immediately pulled out his phone.

Victor's calm disappeared.

"That's impossible."

Dominic looked at him.

"You sound certain."

"Because if someone breached your internal cameras, you have a larger problem than missing money."

Harper heard the implication.

Dominic had enemies inside his own organization.

Caleb looked terrified now.

"Harper, you need to come with me."

"No."

"You don't understand."

"Stop saying that."

"I can fix this."

"You couldn't even manage fidelity."

"Forget Madison!"

The words cut through the room.

Madison recoiled.

Caleb turned toward Harper.

"This was never about her."

Harper laughed once.

"That's comforting."

"Listen. I moved the money because Victor forced me."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

Caleb kept talking.

"I used your name because it was clean. No criminal associations. No flagged accounts."

Harper's hands shook.

"You made me the fall guy."

"No."

"Then what?"

"I was going to disappear."

Madison began crying harder.

Harper stared at him.

"You were what?"

Caleb looked at her.

"I was going to leave tonight."

"With Madison?"

His silence answered.

Harper felt strangely numb.

He had planned to steal money.

Use her name.

Leave her during their engagement celebration.

And disappear with her best friend.

Dominic's face became unreadable.

"Where?"

Caleb shook his head.

"I'm not telling you."

Victor laughed.

"You already stole from me, Caleb. Protecting your destination seems optimistic."

Caleb looked at Victor.

"I didn't steal your money."

"Then whose?"

Nobody spoke.

Dominic stepped forward.

"Mine."

Caleb stared at him.

"No."

"Three million."

Caleb shook his head harder.

"No, that's not possible."

"Why?"

"Because the transfer wasn't three million."

Every person in the immediate circle went still.

Dominic's voice lowered.

"How much?"

Caleb's face drained of color.

"Thirty."

Silence.

Harper thought she had misheard.

"Thirty million?"

Caleb looked at her.

"Yes."

Dominic's eyes moved to Victor.

Victor was no longer smiling.

"Where is it?" Dominic asked.

"I don't know," Caleb said.

Victor suddenly turned toward Madison.

She backed away.

"No."

Harper looked at her.

"What?"

Madison covered her mouth.

Caleb moved toward her.

"Madison."

She shook her head.

"You promised."

Harper felt another chill.

"Promised what?"

Madison reached inside her purse.

Dominic's men moved instantly.

"Easy," Dominic said.

Madison slowly removed a small silver flash drive.

Caleb looked horrified.

"Why do you have that?"

Madison whispered, "Because I stopped trusting you."

Victor stepped forward.

Dominic blocked him.

Harper stared at the drive.

"What is on it?"

Madison looked directly at her.

"Proof."

"Of what?"

"Everything."

She extended the drive toward Harper.

Before Harper could take it, every light in the ballroom went out.

Someone screamed.

A gunshot cracked from somewhere near the entrance.

Dominic grabbed Harper and pulled her behind a marble column.

Guests began shouting.

Glass shattered.

Emergency lights flashed red.

Harper heard Marco yell Dominic's name.

Then Madison screamed.

Harper looked toward where her friend had been standing.

The lights returned three seconds later.

Madison was gone.

May you like

The silver flash drive lay on the floor.

And beside it was a single drop of blood.
