Chapter 6 - Gabriel's Hidden Heir

For one impossible second, the entire ballroom seemed to stop.
Then Adrian's men took control.
Samuel Price was disarmed.
Martin kicked his weapon across the floor.
Victor Dane was forced to his knees.
Margaret Bennett was pulled away from him and rushed toward Claire.
Claire forgot Saint Orion.
Forgot the laptop.
Forgot the guns.
She ran.
"Mom."
Margaret reached her.
They stopped inches apart.
Fifteen years existed between them.
A funeral.
Birthdays.
Christmas mornings.
Breakups.
Promotions.
Loneliness.
Questions.
Claire didn't know whether to hug her or scream.
Margaret solved it by touching Claire's face.
"My baby."
Claire burst into tears.
Then she hit her mother on the shoulder.
Not hard.
"Fifteen years."
"I know."
"You were alive."
"I know."
"I buried you."
"I know."
Then Claire pulled her into an embrace.
Margaret held her as if she might disappear again.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Claire couldn't forgive fifteen years in thirty seconds.
She also couldn't waste the first thirty seconds demanding payment for them.
So she held on.
Across the ballroom, Adrian stood motionless.
Victor Dane was smiling despite two men restraining him.
"Gabriel's son," Adrian said.
Margaret looked at him.
"I'm sorry."
"Where?"
Elise stepped closer.
Her face had gone white.
Margaret looked at her.
"You didn't know?"
Elise shook her head.
"No."
Victor laughed.
"Oh, this is wonderful."
Adrian walked toward him.
"Where is he?"
Victor's smile widened.
"You've met him."
Adrian stopped.
Claire looked around the room.
Martin.
Samuel.
Adrian's men.
Staff.
Her heart began pounding.
Margaret gripped Claire's hand.
"Gabriel never told anyone except Richard and me."
"Why?"
"Because the child's mother begged him."
Elise whispered, "Who?"
Margaret looked at her.
"Not you."
Elise closed her eyes.
Pain crossed her face.
Claire understood.
Gabriel had loved someone else.
Or had a child before the marriage.
Margaret continued.
"He had a son before he met Elise. The mother wanted the boy kept outside the Vale family."
Adrian's voice was quiet.
"Name."
"Lucas."
Adrian went still.
One of his men near the door looked up.
Claire followed his gaze.
Young.
Early thirties.
Dark hair.
He had been with Adrian all night.
The man who had found the signal jammer.
The man who drove the second vehicle.
The man Adrian had called Lucas twice without Claire paying attention.
Adrian turned.
"Lucas."
The young man looked terrified.
Victor laughed again.
"Surprise."
Lucas slowly removed the communication earpiece from his ear.
"Boss."
Adrian stared.
"Did you know?"
"No."
Margaret said, "Richard arranged for Gabriel's son to grow up under his mother's surname."
"Which was?"
"Hale."
Adrian looked at his lieutenant.
"Lucas Hale."
Lucas looked from Margaret to Adrian.
"My mother told me my father was dead."
"He is," Adrian said.
"She said he was a mechanic."
Victor chuckled.
"Technically, Gabriel was very good with engines."
Adrian moved toward Victor.
Claire caught his wrist.
"Don't."
Victor grinned at her.
"You're very comfortable touching him."
Claire ignored that.
"Why does Lucas matter to the archive?"
Margaret looked at the laptop.
"Gabriel changed the succession protocol shortly before he died."
"Why?"
"He didn't want the Vale organization controlling the archive."
Adrian absorbed that without visible offense.
Claire suspected it hurt anyway.
"So Lucas is the true successor."
"Biometrically, yes."
Adrian turned to Lucas.
The younger man looked overwhelmed.
"I don't want anything."
Claire almost laughed.
"Welcome to the evening."
Lucas looked at her.
"Sorry."
"Not your fault."
Victor's expression changed.
The humor disappeared.
"Open the archive."
Claire turned.
"No."
Samuel Price, clutching his injured hand, laughed bitterly.
"You think this is finished because you have guards?"
Adrian looked at him.
"It is for you."
Samuel shook his head.
"If we don't check in by twelve-fifteen, every protected identity in the archive gets transmitted."
Margaret paled.
"He's bluffing."
Samuel smiled.
"Am I?"
Elise grabbed his phone.
Locked.
Adrian's men searched Victor.
Another phone.
Biometric encryption.
Victor said, "You have four minutes."
Claire looked at the laptop.
"What happens if we open it?"
Margaret answered.
"We can deactivate any external release protocol."
"And expose Dane?"
"Yes."
"And protect the witnesses?"
"If we do it correctly."
Claire looked at Lucas.
"You willing?"
He glanced at Adrian.
Adrian said, "Your choice."
Lucas nodded.
"Do it."
They placed the laptop on the birthday cake table.
The absurdity returned.
Thirty-seven candles surrounding an encrypted criminal archive.
Claire inserted the key.
Margaret placed her thumb on the reader.
Lucas did the same.
ACCESS GRANTED.
Files flooded the screen.
Thousands.
Names.
Transactions.
Photographs.
Judges.
Officials.
Companies.
Hospitals.
Accounts.
Victor Dane's empire.
A warning appeared.
EXTERNAL RELEASE PROTOCOL ACTIVE.
TIME REMAINING: 02:41.
"How do we stop it?" Claire asked.
Margaret navigated quickly.
"Need custodian authorization."
They clicked.
Another message.
EMERGENCY OVERRIDE REQUIRES FOURTH AUTHORIZATION.
Claire swore.
"Fourth?"
Margaret stared.
"Richard added someone."
"Who?"
A name appeared.
ADRIAN VALE.
Adrian blinked.
Claire looked at him.
"Apparently my father liked you."
"He never met me."
"He planned ahead."
Adrian placed his hand on the reader.
ACCESS DENIED.
Victor smiled.
"Interesting."
Adrian tried again.
Denied.
Margaret frowned.
"It needs a passphrase."
"From Gabriel," Claire said.
Adrian looked at his watch.
After Midnight.
Blue Sunday.
Claire remembered Richard's card.
Ask Adrian about Saint Orion.
She looked at the red dress.
Tell her to wear red.
Her parents had built everything from family memories.
"What phrase would Gabriel trust Adrian to know?"
Adrian looked at Lucas.
Something changed in his face.
A childhood memory.
He whispered, "No brother left behind."
Claire looked at him.
"What?"
"When we were kids. Whenever one of us got in trouble."
"Try it."
Adrian typed.
NO BROTHER LEFT BEHIND.
ACCESS GRANTED.
Thirty seconds remained.
They disabled the release.
The timer stopped.
Everyone exhaled.
Claire looked at Victor Dane.
His face was no longer amused.
"It's over."
He smiled thinly.
"No."
Adrian's phone rang.
One of his security chiefs.
He answered.
His face changed.
"Say that again."
A pause.
He looked at Claire.
"What?"
Adrian lowered the phone.
"Federal agents are outside."
Claire exhaled.
"Good."
"No."
"Why no?"
"They're not here for Dane."
Victor smiled.
"They're here for Adrian."
The ballroom doors opened.
Agents in tactical gear entered.
A man in a federal jacket stepped forward.
"Adrian Vale, hands where we can see them."
Claire stared.
Victor Dane stood and calmly adjusted his coat.
Nobody stopped him.
Then Claire understood.
"He's one of yours," she whispered.
The federal agent looked at Victor.
Not directly.
Just enough.
Victor smiled.
"Saint Orion didn't buy criminals, Claire."
He stepped toward the exit.
"It bought institutions."
Adrian raised his hands.
Claire moved toward him.
An agent blocked her.
Victor passed Claire and whispered:
"Your father tried this too."
Claire looked at the Saint Orion files.
Then at the agents.
Then at Samuel Price.
And suddenly she understood what Richard had spent fifteen years building.
Not evidence for the police.
Evidence against the police.
She grabbed the laptop.
The federal agent shouted.
"Put that down!"
Claire looked toward the ballroom projector.
A cable ran beneath the birthday table.
She plugged it in.
Victor Dane turned.
His smile vanished.
Claire's hand hovered over one command.
PUBLIC RELEASE — REDACT PROTECTED IDENTITIES.
Adrian looked at her.
"Claire."
She pressed the button.
Every screen in Bellamy House lit up.
Victor's accounts.
Names.
Payments.
Photographs.
And one live upload counter.
Victor lunged toward her.
Martin tackled him.
The agents hesitated.
Phones began ringing everywhere.
News servers.
Independent journalists.
Judicial oversight offices.
Federal inspectors.
Claire had not sent the witness identities.
She had sent everything else.
Victor Dane stared at the screens.
For the first time all night, he looked afraid.
Then Margaret whispered beside Claire:
"There's one file your father never wanted released."
Claire looked down.
A folder had opened automatically.
RICHARD BENNETT — FINAL TESTIMONY.
A video thumbnail appeared.
Her father stared back at her.
Underneath it was a single warning.
PLAY ONLY WHEN VICTOR DANE CAN HEAR IT.
Claire turned.
Victor had stopped struggling.
His face went pale.
"No."
Claire pressed PLAY.
Her father's voice filled the ballroom.
"Victor, if you're hearing this, you lost."
Victor's knees buckled.
May you like
Then Richard continued:
"And Claire, there is one last thing you need to know about the night I died..."
