Chapter 4 - The Mother Who Never Died

Claire couldn't move.
Elise Mercer remained in the doorway as if she had arrived for an ordinary meeting.
No weapon visible.
No fear.
Adrian stepped slightly in front of Claire.
"Where is Samuel Price?"
Elise smiled.
"Still alive."
"That wasn't the question."
"I know."
Claire looked at the paused image of her mother.
Three years after her funeral.
Alive.
"Where is my mother?"
Elise's attention shifted.
"You look like her."
"Don't."
"Same eyes."
"Where is she?"
"That answer depends on what Richard left you."
Claire held up the flash drive.
"This?"
Elise laughed softly.
"If it were that easy, none of us would still be here."
Adrian's men entered behind her.
Elise didn't react.
"Search her," Adrian said.
She raised her hands.
They found no weapon.
Only a phone and a folded photograph.
Claire took the photograph.
Her mother.
Recent.
Gray in her hair.
Standing beside a small cottage.
Date stamp from three months earlier.
Claire's vision blurred.
"She's alive."
"Yes."
"You know where she is."
"I did."
"What does that mean?"
"She moved."
Claire stepped closer.
"Fifteen years."
Elise's smile disappeared.
Claire's voice trembled now.
"Fifteen years, I believed I watched my mother die."
"You watched a woman die."
The room went cold.
"What?"
Elise looked toward the computer.
"Margaret was already gone."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
"Saint Orion had access to hospitals, medical records, identity systems. Your parents knew Dane would never stop hunting them if he believed they were alive."
"My father died."
"Yes."
"So whatever plan they had failed."
Elise looked at Adrian.
"Gabriel's plan failed first."
Adrian stepped toward her.
"Careful."
"You want the truth or revenge?"
"I can manage both."
Claire put one hand on his arm.
He stopped.
She looked at Elise.
"Tell me everything."
Elise leaned against the desk.
"Twelve years ago, Richard discovered Victor Dane was using Saint Orion Foundation to wash money and purchase leverage over judges, police officers, contractors, politicians, hospital administrators."
"How?"
"Charitable grants. Construction projects. Fake medical programs."
"And my mother?"
"She discovered something worse."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"What?"
"Saint Orion wasn't only moving money. It was moving identities."
"People?"
"Records. Death certificates. Birth certificates. Witness relocation information. Medical files."
Adrian stared.
"Gabriel never told me that."
"He didn't know at first."
Elise continued.
"Margaret worked as a medical records auditor."
Claire knew that.
Or thought she did.
"She found patient files belonging to people who didn't exist."
"Fake patients?"
"Some. Others were real people being erased."
Claire looked at the computer screen.
Her mother.
Alive.
"They faked her death."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Dane discovered she copied records."
Claire's voice cracked.
"And she left me."
Elise said nothing.
"She left me."
"She believed staying would get you killed."
"Everyone keeps saying that like it makes abandonment noble."
"No."
Elise's voice softened.
"It doesn't."
That answer surprised Claire.
"She regretted it every day."
"Did she tell you that?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't she come back?"
"Because Richard was still trying to finish what they started."
Claire turned to the screen.
"Play it."
Adrian pressed the button.
Her mother's recorded voice continued.
"Claire, I need you to understand something. If I disappeared, it was because the people watching us had already followed you home twice."
Claire covered her mouth.
"You were twenty-two. You thought the black car outside your apartment belonged to your neighbor. It didn't."
Claire remembered it.
A black sedan.
Always parked half a block away.
She had forgotten.
Richard spoke next.
"We created a false death for Margaret. Gabriel arranged it. Elise helped."
Adrian looked at Elise.
Her eyes lowered.
The video continued.
"We split the Saint Orion archive into three parts. Financial records. Identity records. Protection records."
Claire whispered, "Three keys."
Richard nodded on screen as if answering her.
"Claire has the physical key. Margaret has the cipher. Gabriel has the location of the protection archive."
Adrian cursed softly.
"Gabriel died before he could tell you," Elise said.
Richard continued.
"If Gabriel is gone, Adrian will eventually inherit his responsibility."
Adrian stared at the screen.
His brother's name coming from a dead man.
"If Claire contacts the number, Adrian, answer her."
Claire looked at him.
Richard smiled faintly.
"And tell her to wear red. Maggie insisted."
Claire laughed through tears.
Her mother appeared beside him.
"Red makes her brave."
Claire looked down at the gown.
For the first time that night, she cried.
Not hard.
No dramatic collapse.
Just tears sliding down her face while years of anger and grief rearranged themselves.
Adrian silently handed her a handkerchief.
She took it.
"I hate this birthday."
"I've attended worse."
She laughed unexpectedly.
Then the video changed.
Richard's expression became serious.
"Victor Dane believes the protection archive contains evidence that can destroy him. It does. But it also contains names of innocent witnesses. If released carelessly, people die."
Claire wiped her eyes.
"The key doesn't open the whole archive."
Richard held up a silver star pendant.
"It activates the first layer. Maggie's cipher activates the second. Gabriel's location code activates the third."
Adrian looked at Elise.
"Where is Gabriel's code?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"No."
Richard continued.
"Adrian, if you're watching this, Gabriel hid the final location somewhere only you would understand."
Adrian froze.
Claire looked at him.
"Any idea?"
"No."
The recording ended with her parents holding hands.
Her mother looked into the camera.
"Claire, I'm sorry."
The screen went black.
Claire sat.
Nobody spoke.
Finally she looked at Elise.
"You kidnapped Samuel?"
"No."
"Your people contacted Martin."
"Years ago."
"Then who sent the photograph?"
Elise looked concerned for the first time.
"I assumed Adrian did."
Adrian's face hardened.
"Why would I?"
"To force Claire here."
"I didn't."
Elise straightened.
"Then Dane knows we're here."
Adrian reached for his phone.
No signal.
Claire looked toward the old signal jammer.
"Again?"
The lights died.
This time everyone moved immediately.
Gunfire cracked somewhere outside.
Claire dropped behind the desk.
Adrian pulled her down.
"Stay."
"You've said that before."
"And you've ignored me before."
Another shot.
A window shattered.
Elise crawled toward the filing cabinet.
"What are you doing?" Claire whispered.
"Looking for Richard's emergency exit."
"You knew about it?"
"I helped build this room."
Elise pulled a hidden lever.
A section of shelving released.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
Adrian's men fell back toward them.
"Move."
Claire entered first.
Adrian behind her.
Elise followed.
They descended concrete stairs into an old utility tunnel.
The gunfire faded.
Claire ran in heels until one broke.
She kicked both shoes off.
Adrian looked down.
"Happy birthday."
"Say that again and I'll use the heel as a weapon."
"Understood."
Even Elise laughed.
They emerged near the river two blocks away.
Vehicles waited.
Adrian checked his phone.
Signal returned.
Four missed calls.
One message.
He opened it.
His face changed.
"What?"
Adrian turned the screen.
A live video.
Samuel Price was no longer tied to the chair.
He was standing beside Victor Dane.
Older.
Silver-haired.
Elegant.
Completely unharmed.
Claire stared.
Samuel smiled into the camera.
"Claire, I'm sorry about the theatrics."
Her father's trusted lawyer leaned closer.
"You were never supposed to find Saint Orion with Adrian Vale."
Then Victor Dane stepped forward.
"Bring me the key, Claire."
Behind him, someone was dragged into frame.
A woman.
Gray-streaked brown hair.
Older.
Terrified.
Claire stopped breathing.
Her mother looked directly into the camera.
"Don't give him anything."
The feed went black.
Claire grabbed Adrian's arm.
"That's her."
He nodded.
"That's my mother."
"Yes."
"Then we get her back."
Adrian looked at her.
"No argument?"
"No argument."
Elise's phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
She answered on speaker.
Samuel Price's voice filled the car.
"Midnight. Bellamy House."
Claire frowned.
"My birthday venue?"
"Victor appreciates symbolism."
"Put my mother on."
"You'll see her there."
"What do you want?"
"The Saint Orion key."
"That's it?"
Samuel laughed.
"You know better than that."
The call ended.
Claire stared out the window.
Bellamy House.
The same empty tables.
The same untouched candles.
It had begun there.
Now it would end there.
Adrian's phone buzzed.
A photograph arrived.
His face went white.
Claire leaned closer.
It showed a gravestone.
GABRIEL VALE.
Fresh dirt lay in front of it.
Someone had dug up the grave.
On top of the disturbed earth sat a black envelope.
Written across it:
ADRIAN — YOU FORGOT WHAT I TOOK TO THE GRAVE.
Adrian stared at it.
Then whispered, "The location code."
Claire looked at him.
"What was buried with your brother?"
Adrian's eyes lifted.
"A watch."
May you like
His voice became cold.
"And Victor just found it."
