Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Inside Valente Tower

Raymond Pike did not reach for a weapon.
He raised both hands.
Matteo noticed the cufflink immediately.
“You have thirty seconds,” he said.
Raymond looked at Elena.
“I’m not the person you think I am.”
“Twenty-nine.”
“I worked for Mercer.”
Elena’s face hardened.
“We know.”
Raymond shook his head.
“No. You know I took his money.”
“Same thing.”
“No.”
He placed the cufflink on the floor.
Carefully.
“I started taking his money because Crane asked me to.”
Matteo stared.
“Crane?”
“Three years ago.”
Luca laughed bitterly.
“Detective Crane, who leaked Elena’s statement?”
“Yes.”
“Convenient.”
Raymond nodded.
“Very.”
Matteo stepped closer.
“Explain.”
Raymond had once been an undercover investigator with Illinois financial crimes.
His public record showed military service and corporate security.
His sealed record contained something else.
He had spent six years investigating healthcare fraud.
Crane recruited him to infiltrate Mercer’s network.
At first, Crane seemed legitimate.
Then Raymond realized Crane had stopped building a case.
He was selling information to both sides.
“Why didn’t you go federal?” Sam asked.
“I did.”
“When?”
“Fourteen months ago.”
“And?”
“My contact disappeared.”
“Name?”
“Julia Bennett.”
Sam’s expression changed.
“I know Bennett.”
“Then you know she vanished while working a corruption investigation.”
Matteo looked at Elena.
Another missing person.
Another layer.
Raymond continued.
“Mercer believes I work for him. Crane believes I work for Crane. For the last year, I’ve been trying to figure out who controls Project Nightingale.”
“And who does?” Elena asked.
“I don’t know.”
Matteo’s patience thinned.
“Why did you bring my cufflink?”
“Because Mercer planted it.”
“In Elena’s dressing room?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He wanted photographic evidence connecting you to her injuries.”
Elena went cold.
“What?”
Raymond looked ashamed.
“The plan was to make it appear that you assaulted her.”
Matteo stared.
“The photograph.”
“Yes.”
“Taken through the mirror.”
“There’s a hidden camera behind the wall.”
Elena remembered the message.
Don’t let her reach room 614.
Mercer wanted Matteo angry.
He wanted Matteo physically present with a bruised woman.
He wanted surveillance.
A perfect scandal.
“And the blood?” Gabriel asked over speakerphone.
Raymond hesitated.
“Elena’s.”
She stared.
“How?”
“From a blood sample taken at St. Vincent years ago.”
Matteo’s expression became lethal.
“They stored it?”
“They had access.”
The entire dressing-room scene had been manufactured.
Wrong cufflinks.
Wrong door.
Hidden camera.
Elena’s blood.
The only unplanned element had been Matteo seeing the actual bruises.
Or perhaps even that had been expected.
Elena whispered, “Daniel wanted him to find me.”
Raymond nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To trigger him.”
Matteo understood.
If he attacked Daniel, the staged evidence would transform him into the suspect.
Elena would be discredited.
The foundation would collapse.
Project Nightingale would disappear beneath scandal.
Matteo almost admired the design.
Almost.
“Why warn us now?” Luca asked.
“Because Mercer changed the plan.”
“To?”
Raymond looked at Elena.
“He wants you dead before morning.”
Silence.
Matteo stepped directly between them.
Raymond continued quickly.
“Not by his people. By Crane.”
“Why Crane?”
“Because Crane needs the drive Marisol mailed.”
Gabriel’s voice came through the phone.
“She’s being released now.”
Matteo grabbed it.
“Do not let her leave with anyone.”
“I’m standing beside her.”
“Take her through staff exit C. Sam will meet you.”
Sam was already moving.
Raymond said, “That won’t be enough.”
“Why?”
“Mercer knows Gabriel represents her.”
Matteo stared.
“How?”
Raymond lowered his eyes.
“Someone inside Gabriel’s office is reporting to him.”
Everyone looked around.
The conference room.
The elevator.
The supposedly secure floor.
Gabriel’s law firm.
Another compromised sanctuary.
Matteo felt something almost like exhaustion.
Every door they closed had another man behind it.
“Who?” Luca asked.
“I don’t know.”
Matteo turned to Sam.
“Get Marisol.”
Sam left.
Raymond remained by the elevator.
Matteo picked up the cufflink.
“Tell me about the drive.”
“Mercer believes Marisol mailed it to a journalist.”
“Did she?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who paid her bail using my name?”
“Crane.”
“Why?”
“To make it look like you’re interfering with a witness.”
Gabriel cursed through the phone.
“This is beautiful.”
“What?”
“Legally. It’s beautiful. They’re building obstruction before we even know the case exists.”
Matteo sat.
For the first time that night, he looked tired.
Elena noticed.
Everyone treated Matteo as though he were made from something harder than other people.
He wasn’t.
He simply showed less damage.
Elena moved closer.
“What do we do?”
Matteo looked at her.
“Something Mercer doesn’t expect.”
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Raymond frowned.
Matteo continued.
“We stop chasing him.”
Luca understood first.
“We make him chase us.”
Matteo nodded.
They created bait.
At 5:18 a.m., Luca accessed the foundation’s dormant disaster-recovery server.
He created a document titled NIGHTINGALE_MASTER_ARCHIVE.
No real evidence inside.
Only encrypted junk data.
Then Raymond contacted Mercer through the channel he normally used.
FOUND IT.
Mercer replied in forty-two seconds.
WHERE?
Raymond typed:
VALENTE FOUNDATION BACKUP. RUSSO GAVE IT TO MATTEO MONTHS AGO.
No reply.
Two minutes later, Matteo’s personal phone rang.
Daniel Mercer.
Matteo answered.
“Daniel.”
“Long night?”
“You tell me.”
Daniel laughed.
“You always were theatrical.”
“I’m at Gabriel’s office.”
“I know.”
Matteo looked toward Raymond.
Confirmed.
Someone was watching.
Daniel continued.
“Elena is unwell.”
“She looked fine to me.”
“She has a history of paranoia.”
“Does she?”
“Ask her father.”
Matteo’s jaw tightened.
“I’m asking you.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“She destroys people when she feels cornered.”
Matteo looked at Elena.
She heard every word.
Her face remained calm.
“I think you’re describing yourself,” Matteo said.
Silence.
Then Daniel laughed again.
“You should be careful.”
“Why?”
“Because women like Elena make powerful men believe they’re rescuing someone. Then they drag them down.”
Elena’s hands curled.
Matteo said, “You’re afraid.”
Daniel stopped laughing.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The part where you pretend you know people.”
“I know you called me because you think I have something.”
“What would that be?”
“Nightingale.”
Three seconds of silence.
Confirmation.
Matteo smiled.
Daniel’s next words came slowly.
“You have no idea what you’re touching.”
“Then explain.”
“You think this is hospital fraud?”
“I think you’re talking too much.”
Daniel hung up.
Raymond checked his own phone.
“He wants to meet.”
“Where?”
“Valente Tower.”
“When?”
“Seven.”
Two hours.
“Why there?” Elena asked.
Matteo knew.
“Because he still controls people inside.”
Luca looked at him.
“Then we don’t go.”
“We absolutely go.”
Elena crossed her arms.
“You just said we stop chasing him.”
“We did.”
“He invited us.”
“Exactly.”
At 6:03 a.m., Sam returned with Marisol.
Elena ran to her.
Marisol Vega looked exhausted, bruised around one wrist from handcuffs, but alive.
The two women embraced.
Marisol cried first.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“I moved the drive.”
“You saved it.”
“I lost people.”
“Who?”
Marisol looked toward the men.
Then whispered, “Julia Bennett.”
Raymond went still.
“You knew Bennett?”
“She helped me.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
Marisol sat.
She explained that Julia Bennett had contacted her six months earlier.
The federal investigator was not missing.
She had gone underground after discovering Crane’s corruption.
Julia helped Marisol duplicate Nightingale evidence.
Three copies existed.
One hidden.
One mailed.
One retained by Julia.
“Who did you mail it to?” Gabriel asked.
Marisol looked at Elena.
“You.”
Elena stared.
“What?”
“Your father’s house.”
Elena’s face drained.
“When?”
“Two weeks ago.”
The phone calls to her father.
Mercer knew.
Matteo immediately called Arizona.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Elena stood.
“No.”
Matteo grabbed another phone.
Sam contacted local police through a trusted federal channel.
Three minutes felt like thirty.
Finally, Sam received confirmation.
Elena’s father was safe.
He had gone fishing overnight with a neighbor.
The package was still at his house.
Unopened.
Elena nearly collapsed from relief.
“We have the evidence,” Luca said.
“Not yet,” Gabriel replied. “We have a package two thousand miles away that our enemies know exists.”
Sam arranged for federal agents outside Crane’s network to recover it.
For the first time all night, the balance shifted.
Not enough.
But slightly.
At 6:41 a.m., Raymond received another message.
MERCER: COME ALONE.
Matteo read it.
“No.”
Raymond nodded.
“I assumed.”
Then another message arrived.
A photograph.
Valente Tower ballroom.
Empty now.
One chair placed beneath the chandelier.
A woman sat in it.
Her hands appeared tied.
The picture was taken from behind.
Gray suit.
Short blond hair.
Raymond stopped breathing.
“Julia.”
Sam grabbed the phone.
“That’s Bennett.”
The missing federal investigator.
Alive.
Inside Matteo’s building.
Daniel sent one final message.
7:00.
BRING RUSSO.
OR JULIA BENNETT DIES.
Elena looked at the clock.
Nineteen minutes.
Matteo turned toward the window.
May you like
The sun was beginning to rise over Chicago.
And somewhere inside Valente Tower, the conspiracy had finally stopped hiding.
