Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Courage Against The Darkness

Clare Bennett had faced difficult moments before.

She had faced hospital rooms where doctors delivered terrible news.

She had faced empty bank accounts.

She had faced the humiliation of losing a career she spent years building.

She had faced the loneliness of raising a child while pretending she wasn't afraid.

But standing outside her apartment after a stranger threatened her because of Sebastian Lombardi...

That was different.

Because this time, the danger wasn't only coming for her.

It was moving toward Oliver.

And every mother had a limit.

Clare waited until she was inside before allowing herself to breathe.

She locked the door.

Then she checked it again.

And again.

The apartment suddenly felt smaller than usual.

Every sound from the hallway made her look up.

Every shadow outside the window made her heart race.

But when she entered Oliver's room and saw him sleeping peacefully, the fear transformed into something else.

Determination.

She sat beside his bed and watched him.

She hated that her son had to live with uncertainty.

She hated that people with power and violence could enter their lives whenever they wanted.

But most of all, she hated the thought that she might have brought this danger to him.

Maybe the man was right.

Maybe Sebastian Lombardi destroyed everything he loved.

Maybe she should walk away before something worse happened.

The thought stayed with her.

Until Oliver suddenly opened his eyes.

"Mom?"

Clare looked down.

"Hey."

"You look sad."

She forced a smile.

"I'm okay."

Oliver studied her.

"You always say that when you're not."

The words made her smile sadly.

Children noticed everything.

"I met someone who needs help."

Oliver blinked.

"Can you help him?"

Clare looked away.

"I don't know."

"Why not?"

Because he's dangerous.

Because his world is dangerous.

Because everyone around him carries secrets.

She couldn't say any of that.

So she answered honestly.

"Because sometimes helping someone means getting close to their problems."

Oliver thought for a moment.

Then he said something simple.

"Maybe people who are hurt need someone close."

Clare looked at him.

A child who needed help himself had somehow given her the answer.

The next morning, Clare made a decision.

She would not quit.

Not because Sebastian Lombardi was powerful.

Not because of the money.

Not because she was fearless.

She stayed because she knew something about broken people.

When everyone abandoned them, they became even more broken.

And Sebastian had been abandoned for twenty years.

But there was one thing she needed to make clear.

She wasn't going to let anyone threaten her family.

Not Sebastian.

Not his enemies.

Not anyone.

When Clare arrived at the mansion, Gabriel immediately noticed something was different.

She wasn't nervous.

She wasn't uncertain.

She looked focused.

"You came."

Sebastian's voice came from inside the room.

Clare entered.

He was sitting near the window.

Watching the city.

"You expected me not to?"

"After what happened?"

She placed her therapy bag down.

"Someone tried to scare me."

Sebastian's expression changed.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

His jaw tightened.

"Describe him."

Clare noticed the reaction.

This wasn't anger.

This was something more dangerous.

Control.

"Sebastian."

His eyes moved to hers.

"What?"

"You need to stop acting like every problem can be solved by destroying whoever caused it."

Silence.

Gabriel, standing nearby, looked surprised.

Nobody spoke to Sebastian like that.

But Clare continued.

"You can't protect people by creating more enemies."

Sebastian stared at her.

"You think you understand how my world works?"

"No."

She paused.

"But I understand people."

That answer irritated him.

And somehow, he respected it.

The therapy session started differently.

No arguments.

No cold remarks.

No attempts from Sebastian to push her away.

Instead, he asked:

"Are you afraid of me?"

The question surprised Clare.

She looked at him.

"Sometimes."

Sebastian looked almost disappointed.

"At least you're honest."

"I said sometimes."

He looked at her.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning I'm afraid of what surrounds you."

A pause.

"Not you."

Something changed in his expression.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But Clare saw it.

For years, Sebastian had heard people say they feared him.

Nobody had ever separated him from the darkness around him.

Until now.

As Clare examined his condition, Sebastian became more cooperative.

He followed instructions.

He answered questions.

He allowed her to study the areas he had spent years refusing to discuss.

"Your muscles aren't completely inactive."

Sebastian looked skeptical.

"You said that before."

"Because it's still true."

"And what does that mean?"

"It means your body didn't give up."

He looked away.

"But I did."

The honesty surprised her.

Clare stopped.

For a moment, Sebastian looked younger.

Not like the feared man from the newspapers.

Not like the man everyone obeyed.

Just someone tired.

"What happened after the accident?"

Sebastian was silent.

Then:

"I lost people."

Clare waited.

"My father died before I became who I am now."

His voice became quieter.

"My mother spent years watching me become someone she didn't recognize."

He looked at his hands.

"Friends disappeared."

"Family betrayed me."

"Everyone had a reason to leave."

Clare understood then.

The wheelchair wasn't the only thing trapping him.

It was everything he lost after it.

"The accident took your legs."

She spoke softly.

"But betrayal took the rest."

Sebastian looked at her.

And for once, he didn't deny it.

Later that evening, Sebastian made a decision he hadn't made in years.

He left the mansion.

Not for business.

Not for revenge.

For Oliver.

When Clare returned home, she found a package waiting outside her door.

Inside was a new medical device for Oliver.

A better one.

More advanced.

There was no note.

No explanation.

But she knew.

She immediately called Sebastian.

He answered after the first ring.

"You shouldn't have done that."

Silence.

Then:

"Your son needs it."

Clare looked at the device.

"You can't just fix people's problems with money."

"I know."

His voice was quiet.

That surprised her.

"I know money doesn't fix everything."

A pause.

"But sometimes it prevents things from getting worse."

Clare softened.

"Thank you."

The words seemed strange to Sebastian.

People thanked him all the time.

For business deals.

For protection.

For favors.

But this felt different.

Because she wasn't thanking his power.

She was thanking him.

The person.

That night, Sebastian sat alone.

He looked at his wheelchair.

Then at his hands.

Then toward the empty space in front of him.

For years, he believed his purpose was control.

Control his empire.

Control his enemies.

Control his emotions.

But Clare had shown him something.

Real strength wasn't controlling everything.

It was caring about something enough to risk losing it.

And that terrified him.

Because he cared.

Meanwhile, Gabriel continued investigating.

And what he discovered changed everything.

He entered Sebastian's office late that night.

"We found the person leaking information."

Sebastian looked up.

"Who?"

Gabriel hesitated.

That hesitation told Sebastian everything.

"Say it."

Gabriel placed a file on the desk.

Sebastian opened it.

The name stared back at him.

A man he trusted.

A man who had been beside him for years.

A man who knew every secret.

Sebastian's expression became unreadable.

"No."

"I'm sorry."

Sebastian closed the file slowly.

"How long?"

"We don't know."

"But long enough."

Gabriel nodded.

The betrayal wasn't just personal.

It was dangerous.

Because this person knew everything.

The empire.

The security.

The weaknesses.

And now...

Clare.

Sebastian looked toward the dark city outside.

Twenty years ago, someone tried to destroy his life.

Now someone was trying again.

But this time was different.

Because this time, he had something to lose.

And that made him more dangerous than ever.

"Find him."

Gabriel nodded.

"And Sebastian..."

He stopped.

"What?"

"If this person is willing to go after Clare..."

Sebastian's eyes turned cold.

"Then they already made their mistake."

The room fell silent.

Because everyone knew one thing about Sebastian Lombardi.

He could forgive many things.

But threatening someone innocent?

Never.

For twenty years, Sebastian had fought because he was angry.

Now he had another reason.

May you like

Someone had given him a reason to believe again.

And he would destroy anyone who tried to take that away.
