Chapter 5 - The Enemy Inside The Empire

Sebastian Lombardi had spent twenty years understanding danger.
Danger had a sound.
Sometimes it was the quiet click of a weapon being loaded.
Sometimes it was the footsteps of someone entering a room who shouldn't be there.
Sometimes it was a name whispered by someone who was afraid.
But the most dangerous threats were always the ones nobody noticed.
The ones sitting beside you.
The ones shaking your hand.
The ones who knew exactly where to hurt you.
Sebastian stared at the message on his phone again.
Stop searching for answers, or the therapist will pay for what you couldn't protect.
The words were simple.
But they carried a warning only someone from his world would understand.
Someone knew about Clare.
Someone had been watching.
And someone believed Clare was important enough to use against him.
That was the mistake.
They thought Clare was a weakness.
They were wrong.
Because Sebastian Lombardi had spent his entire life protecting what belonged to him.
And now, for reasons he didn't fully understand, he wanted to protect her.
"Find out who sent it."
Gabriel stood across from Sebastian's desk.
"I already started."
"And?"
"Nothing yet."
Sebastian's expression darkened.
Nothing was unacceptable.
In his world, information was power.
And right now, someone had information he didn't have.
That made him vulnerable.
"Check every person who knew about Clare."
Gabriel looked surprised.
"Everyone?"
"Everyone."
"Even your inner circle?"
Sebastian looked at him.
"Especially them."
The answer was enough.
Gabriel nodded.
He had worked with Sebastian for fifteen years.
He had seen him angry.
He had seen him violent.
He had seen him almost lose control.
But this was different.
This wasn't rage.
This was fear.
And Gabriel knew something most people didn't.
Sebastian Lombardi wasn't afraid of death.
He had been close to death many times.
What terrified him was losing someone else.
Clare knew something was wrong the moment she arrived at the mansion.
Usually, the security around the property was invisible.
Professional.
Controlled.
Today, it felt different.
More guards.
More cameras.
More tension.
She stepped out of the car and looked around.
Gabriel was waiting.
"Something happened."
It wasn't a question.
Gabriel studied her.
"You notice everything."
"That's why Sebastian hired me."
A pause.
"He didn't hire you."
Clare looked at him.
"What?"
"He asked for you."
The difference surprised her.
Before she could respond, Gabriel opened the door.
"Come inside."
Sebastian was in the same room.
But something had changed.
Before, his anger filled the space.
Today, his silence did.
Clare placed her bag down.
"What happened?"
Sebastian looked at her.
"You ask a lot of questions."
"You avoid answering most of them."
A small moment passed.
Then Sebastian looked away.
"Someone knows you're working with me."
Clare became still.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you may be in danger."
The words were direct.
No manipulation.
No intimidation.
Just the truth.
Clare looked at him carefully.
"And you're telling me this because?"
Sebastian didn't answer immediately.
Because the honest answer was something he wasn't ready to say.
Because he cared.
Instead, he said:
"Because I don't want unnecessary complications."
Clare almost smiled.
"You're terrible at pretending you don't care."
His eyes moved back to hers.
"You should be careful."
"Is that a threat?"
"No."
His voice softened slightly.
"A warning."
For the first time since meeting him, Clare saw something different.
Not the crime boss.
Not the powerful businessman.
A man who was worried.
It was subtle.
Most people would never notice.
But Clare noticed everything.
The tension in his shoulders.
The way his fingers tightened when he spoke about danger.
The way his eyes followed the door whenever she moved.
"You've spent your whole life expecting people to betray you."
Sebastian frowned.
"That's because they do."
"Some do."
She stepped closer.
"But not everyone."
His expression hardened.
"You don't know that."
"No."
Clare looked at him.
"But neither do you."
The words stayed with him.
Because Sebastian realized something uncomfortable.
For twenty years, he had protected himself by assuming the worst.
And maybe that was why he had ended up alone.
The therapy session began.
But neither of them was focused only on his body anymore.
There was something else between them.
Trust.
Fragile.
Uncertain.
But growing.
Clare examined his back again.
This time, Sebastian didn't tense immediately.
He noticed.
So did she.
"You trust me more."
He looked at her.
"Don't make it a big deal."
"I didn't."
"You were thinking it."
She smiled slightly.
"Maybe."
For a moment, something almost normal existed between them.
No fear.
No reputation.
No secrets.
Just two people in a room.
Then Sebastian suddenly moved.
A small reaction.
Almost nothing.
But Clare felt it.
She stopped.
"Again."
"What?"
"Do that again."
Sebastian looked confused.
"I didn't do anything."
"Exactly."
She moved around to face him.
"Your body reacted before you realized it."
Sebastian stared at her.
"You really believe that means something."
"I know it does."
He looked away.
"Don't give me hope."
The words were quiet.
Not angry.
Not sarcastic.
Honest.
Clare noticed.
And it changed everything.
Because Sebastian Lombardi wasn't afraid of failure.
He was afraid of believing.
"Hope isn't the dangerous part."
She spoke softly.
"Giving up is."
That evening, Clare returned home later than usual.
Oliver was awake.
Sitting in bed.
Waiting for her.
"You look different."
Clare smiled.
"Different how?"
"Like you're thinking about something."
She sat beside him.
"I met someone today."
"A friend?"
The question made her pause.
She wasn't sure what Sebastian was.
A client.
A danger.
A mystery.
Someone who needed help.
"I don't know yet."
Oliver thought about that.
"Sometimes people become friends after they need help."
Clare looked at him.
Children had a way of saying things adults forgot.
"Maybe."
She kissed his forehead.
"Go back to sleep."
But after she left the room, Clare couldn't stop thinking about Sebastian.
Not the man everyone feared.
The man who quietly said:
Don't give me hope.
Meanwhile, inside Sebastian's mansion, the investigation continued.
Gabriel entered the office.
"We found something."
Sebastian looked up.
"Who?"
Gabriel placed a folder on the desk.
"Someone who worked for you before."
Sebastian opened it.
A name.
A face.
A memory.
His expression changed.
"No."
Gabriel watched him carefully.
"You know him."
Sebastian stared at the photograph.
Of course he knew him.
Everyone did.
Because the man had been there from the beginning.
Before the empire.
Before the money.
Before the reputation.
"He was family."
Gabriel nodded.
"That's why it's complicated."
Sebastian closed the folder.
"When?"
"We're still confirming."
Sebastian looked toward the window.
The city lights reflected against the glass.
For years, he believed his enemies were outside.
Waiting beyond the walls.
Preparing to attack.
But maybe he had been wrong.
Maybe the greatest threat had been standing beside him all along.
"Find him."
Gabriel hesitated.
"What if he runs?"
Sebastian's expression became cold.
"Then make sure he understands something."
A pause.
"He came after the wrong person."
Gabriel nodded and left.
Sebastian remained alone.
But this time, he wasn't thinking about revenge.
He was thinking about Clare.
About the way she looked at him.
About the way she spoke to him.
About the impossible possibility that maybe his life wasn't finished.
And that scared him more than any enemy ever had.
Because enemies were easy.
You could fight enemies.
But hope?
Hope could break your heart.
The next morning, Clare received an unexpected visitor.
A man she had never seen before stood outside her apartment building.
He wore an expensive suit.
His smile was polite.
Too polite.
"Clare Bennett?"
She stopped.
"Yes?"
The man looked around.
Then lowered his voice.
"You need to stop helping Sebastian Lombardi."
Her expression changed.
"Who are you?"
The man smiled.
"Someone who knows exactly what happens to people who get too close to him."
Clare stepped back.
"I think you should leave."
The man's smile disappeared.
"You're making a mistake."
Before he walked away, he left her with one final sentence.
"Sebastian Lombardi destroys everything he loves."
Clare watched him disappear into the street.
For the first time, she wondered if helping Sebastian wasn't just dangerous for her.
Maybe it was dangerous for everyone around him.
But deep inside, she already knew something.
May you like
The man everyone feared wasn't the person she was afraid of.
The person she feared was the one who wanted him destroyed.
