Chapter 6 - The Daughter Who Finally Found a Mother’s Love

Mara Ellis had forgotten what it felt like to belong somewhere.

For years, every place she stayed felt temporary.

The hospital where she worked.

The apartment where she lived with Daniel.

The shelters where she occasionally found warmth.

Even the streets beneath the old laundromat awning.

Everything had felt borrowed.

Like life was waiting to take it away.

But now, sitting in Adrian Vale’s mansion, Mara felt something she had not allowed herself to feel in years.

Peace.

And that frightened her more than danger ever had.

Because danger was familiar.

Hope was not.

Mia had become the reason Mara stayed.

Not because Adrian asked her.

Not because she owed him anything.

Because the little girl needed someone.

And Mara understood that feeling.

The feeling of losing something important and wondering if anyone would notice.

Every morning, Mara sat with Mia during breakfast.

At first, Mia barely spoke.

She was quiet, watching everything around her.

Watching Mara.

Watching the way she moved.

The way she listened.

The way she treated her like a person instead of a patient.

Slowly, things changed.

One morning, Mia laughed.

It was a small sound.

Almost impossible to notice.

But Adrian noticed.

He was standing at the doorway when it happened.

His daughter was laughing at something Mara had said.

A real laugh.

The kind Adrian had not heard in years.

He stayed silent.

Because he understood the importance of that moment.

After losing her mother, Mia had built walls around herself.

Doctors had helped.

Therapy had helped.

But Mara had done something different.

She had simply been there.

"You know she likes you."

Adrian's voice came from behind Mara.

She turned.

He stood near the garden entrance.

Mara smiled slightly.

"I like her too."

Adrian looked at Mia, who was drawing flowers on a piece of paper.

"I mean more than that."

Mara became quiet.

"You think I don't know?"

He looked surprised.

"Know what?"

"That she's attached to me."

Adrian didn't answer.

Mara looked down.

"That's dangerous."

His expression changed.

"Why?"

"Because people leave."

The words were simple.

But Adrian felt the weight behind them.

Mara continued.

"I lost my husband. I lost my home. I lost my career."

She looked at Mia.

"I don't want her to lose someone else."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Mara."

She looked at him.

"You're not Daniel."

The statement surprised her.

"You don't have to disappear because someone else did."

Mara looked away.

It was easier to survive when you expected everything to end.

Adrian understood that.

Because he lived the same way.

That afternoon, Adrian received unexpected news.

Victor Kane had disappeared.

His private plane had been scheduled to leave the country.

But someone had stopped it.

Not the police.

Not Adrian's people.

Someone else.

Marcus entered the office with a serious expression.

"We found something."

Adrian looked up.

"What?"

"Victor wasn't running because of you."

A pause.

"He was running because of someone inside his organization."

Adrian frowned.

"Explain."

Marcus placed a file on the desk.

"Someone leaked information about the attack."

"Who?"

"We don't know."

Adrian opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

A man.

Someone from Victor Kane's inner circle.

But there was something else.

A note.

A handwritten message.

Adrian read it.

His expression changed.

"What does it say?"

Marcus asked.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Because the message was not for him.

It was for Mara.

"The truth was hidden because she was never supposed to survive."

That evening, Adrian showed Mara the message.

She read it silently.

Her hands began to shake.

Not from fear.

From memory.

A hospital hallway.

Daniel standing there.

A worried expression.

A sentence she had forgotten.

"If something happens to me, don't trust anyone."

Mara stepped back.

"I heard this before."

Adrian watched her carefully.

"From Daniel?"

She nodded.

"I thought it was grief."

Her voice became quieter.

"I thought I imagined it."

"You didn't."

Mara looked at him.

"Why me?"

Adrian had no answer.

Not yet.

But he knew one thing.

Someone had spent years trying to erase Mara Ellis.

And they had failed.

Later that night, Mia found Mara sitting alone.

The little girl slowly rolled closer.

"You look sad."

Mara smiled weakly.

"Do I?"

Mia nodded.

"You look like me when I miss my mom."

The words touched Mara.

She looked at the little girl.

"Do you miss her every day?"

Mia thought for a moment.

"Yes."

"Does it hurt?"

"Yes."

Mara smiled softly.

"But you still smile."

Mia nodded.

"Because my mom told me something."

"What?"

The girl looked at her.

"She said love doesn't disappear."

Mara felt tears forming.

Because Daniel had said something similar.

Not the same words.

But the same meaning.

Love remained.

Even after people were gone.

Mia reached out.

"Are you going to leave?"

Mara froze.

The question she feared most.

"I don't know."

Mia looked down.

Then Mara held her hand.

"But I don't want to."

Mia looked up.

"Really?"

"Really."

The little girl smiled.

And for the first time in years...

Mara felt like someone wanted her to stay.

That night, Adrian stood outside Mia's room.

He watched his daughter sleep.

Then he looked toward the hallway.

Toward Mara's room.

A woman who had entered his life as a stranger.

A woman who had saved the most important person in his world.

A woman who was now becoming someone his daughter needed.

Someone he needed.

His phone rang.

Marcus.

Adrian answered.

"Speak."

"We found the person who leaked the information."

Adrian became alert.

"Who?"

Silence.

Then Marcus said:

"You need to see this yourself."

"Why?"

A pause.

"Because it's someone connected to Mara."

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

And suddenly he understood.

The danger was not over.

It had only changed.

May you like

Because the past Mara thought she lost...

was finally coming back to find her.
