Chapter 5 - The Enemy Who Wanted Her Gone

Mara Ellis had spent years believing the worst thing that could happen to someone was losing everything.

She had been wrong.

Losing everything meant there was nothing left to protect.

The real danger came when you discovered that the life you thought was gone forever had been taken from you for a reason.

That was the thought that kept Mara awake long after midnight.

She sat on the edge of the bed inside Adrian Vale’s mansion, staring at the darkness outside her window.

The room was quiet.

Safe.

At least, it was supposed to be.

But for the first time since arriving there, Mara did not feel comforted by the walls around her.

She felt trapped by questions.

Who had called Adrian?

Why did they know her name?

Why did they say she was not just a nurse?

And why did the idea of searching for answers feel less like discovering the truth...

and more like opening a door that should have stayed closed?

Mara touched the small scar near her wrist.

A scar from years ago.

A scar she barely remembered getting.

There were many things from that time in her life that felt blurry.

The accident.

The months after Daniel died.

The moment she stopped working.

She had always blamed grief.

She thought losing her husband had broken her.

But what if grief was only part of the story?

What if something else had happened?

Something she had forgotten.

The next morning, Adrian found Mara already awake.

She was sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in front of her.

She had not touched it.

He noticed.

"You didn't sleep."

Mara looked up.

"Neither did you."

Adrian almost smiled.

She had a habit of noticing things.

The same thing that had made her a good nurse.

The same thing that had probably saved his daughter.

He sat across from her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Mara asked:

"What did you find?"

Adrian knew exactly what she meant.

Not everyone would have been brave enough to ask.

Most people would have ignored the danger.

Mara wanted the truth.

"We found some information about your past."

Her fingers tightened around the coffee cup.

"And?"

Adrian placed a folder on the table.

Mara stared at it.

"I don't want you to open it if you're not ready."

She looked at him.

"Adrian, someone tried to kill me."

A pause.

"I think I'm already past the point of being afraid."

The honesty in her voice surprised him.

He opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

Mara looked down.

The first picture was of her.

But not the woman sitting in front of him.

A younger Mara.

A confident Mara.

A woman standing outside a hospital with several other doctors and nurses.

She looked happy.

Alive.

"I remember this."

Her voice became quiet.

"I was twenty-eight."

Adrian watched her reaction.

"You don't remember everything?"

Mara shook her head.

"No."

She turned another page.

A newspaper article.

A medical award.

A photo of her accepting recognition.

"You were investigating?"

Adrian nodded.

"I needed to understand who you were."

Mara looked at him.

"And did you?"

"No."

The answer was immediate.

"That's the problem."

She continued reading.

Then she stopped.

A name appeared.

Her expression changed.

Adrian noticed.

"What is it?"

Mara stared at the document.

"Dr. Elias Warren."

"Who is he?"

She slowly shook her head.

"I don't know."

But Adrian knew she was lying.

Not intentionally.

Not completely.

It was the reaction of someone searching through a locked room inside their own mind.

"You recognize him."

Mara looked away.

"I don't know why."

Silence.

Then another memory surfaced.

A hospital hallway.

A man speaking quietly.

A warning.

A sentence she had forgotten.

Mara suddenly closed her eyes.

"What did he say?"

Adrian asked.

She breathed slowly.

"I don't know."

But her face said otherwise.

"He told me..."

She stopped.

Adrian waited.

"He told me some things were better left buried."

The room became still.

Later that afternoon, Adrian took Mara to a private section of his estate where his security team had built a temporary investigation room.

Mara hesitated before entering.

"This is your life, isn't it?"

Adrian looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"Always searching."

Always protecting.

Always expecting someone to attack.

He did not answer.

Because she was right.

Mara looked around.

Screens.

Files.

Photographs.

Information.

A whole world built around finding threats.

"I used to think people like you were just powerful."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"And now?"

She looked at him.

"Now I think you're tired."

The answer caught him off guard.

Nobody spoke to him that way.

People feared him.

They respected him.

They obeyed him.

But almost nobody saw him.

Mara did.

And that made him uncomfortable.

Before he could respond, Marcus entered.

"We found something."

Adrian immediately turned.

"What?"

Marcus placed a tablet on the table.

"We traced the call from last night."

"And?"

Marcus looked serious.

"It came from a company connected to one of your rivals."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Which one?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Victor Kane."

The name changed the atmosphere.

Even Mara noticed.

"Who is he?"

Adrian looked at the screen.

"Someone who has wanted to destroy me for years."

Marcus continued.

"But that's not the strangest part."

Adrian looked at him.

"What?"

"The company records show payments made eighteen months ago."

"To who?"

Marcus turned the screen.

Mara saw her own name.

Her blood ran cold.

"That can't be."

Adrian stepped closer.

The payment records were clear.

Mara Ellis.

A large amount of money.

Transferred shortly before her husband's accident.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was heavier than any accusation.

Mara stepped back.

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

"Mara..."

"No."

She shook her head.

"I never received that money."

"We know."

Marcus said quietly.

"That's why it's suspicious."

Mara stared at the document.

Someone had created a record.

Someone had made it look like she was involved.

But why?

Why would anyone frame a nurse?

A widow?

A woman with nothing?

Then the answer came.

Not completely.

Not clearly.

But enough.

"Daniel."

Adrian looked at her.

"My husband."

Her voice trembled.

"They weren't after me."

A pause.

"They were after him."

That night, Mara finally told Adrian something she had never told anyone.

Not the police.

Not her friends.

Not even herself.

After Daniel's death, she had found something inside their apartment.

A small notebook.

Hidden behind a loose piece of wood in their bedroom wall.

She had ignored it at first.

She was too broken.

Too overwhelmed.

But weeks later, when she finally opened it...

She found names.

Dates.

Companies.

Information Daniel had been collecting.

"He wasn't just an ordinary accountant."

Adrian listened carefully.

"What was he?"

Mara looked down.

"I don't know."

She swallowed.

"But he knew something."

Adrian leaned forward.

"About Victor Kane?"

"Maybe."

The room became quiet.

Then Mara whispered:

"Someone wanted Daniel silent."

"And when he died?"

"They thought the problem was gone."

Adrian finished the sentence.

"But they were wrong."

Mara looked at him.

Because she understood.

The attack on his daughter.

The attack on her.

The lies.

The hidden records.

Everything connected.

Someone had been cleaning up loose ends.

And somehow...

She had become one of them.

Near midnight, Adrian stood outside Mara's room.

He had spent his life making decisions without hesitation.

But this was different.

Because protecting Mara was no longer an obligation.

It was personal.

She had saved Mia.

Now he had to save her.

His phone vibrated.

Marcus.

Adrian answered.

"We found Victor Kane."

A pause.

"Where?"

"He's leaving the city tonight."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Not anymore."

But before he could move, Marcus continued.

"There's another problem."

"What?"

"He knows Mara is alive."

Silence.

Adrian looked toward Mara's closed door.

The woman who had entered his life through a storm.

The woman who had taken bullets meant for his daughter.

The woman who had lost everything because someone wanted her forgotten.

"What did he say?"

Marcus's voice became lower.

"He said..."

A pause.

"He should have made sure she died the first time."

Adrian's expression changed.

Cold.

Dangerous.

Because Victor Kane had made one mistake.

He had forgotten something.

Mara Ellis was not alone anymore.

May you like

And the man standing between her and the people who wanted her destroyed...

was someone the world had learned to fear.
