Chapter 7 - The Secret Beneath The Command Office

The voice was impossible.

Not because I didn't recognize it.

Because I did.

My father's voice.

The same voice that had called my name when I was a child.

The same voice I remembered from old recordings and forgotten memories.

The same voice I had not heard in years.

I stood frozen in the doorway.

Daniel stopped beside me.

Neither of us moved.

Inside the dark office, a small projector flickered on.

A figure appeared on the wall.

A man sitting behind a desk.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

My father.

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

Because the impossible was happening.

The man I buried years ago was looking directly at me.

"Elena."

The recording paused.

Then continued.

"If you are watching this, it means they failed to stop you."

My hands tightened.

Daniel looked at me.

But I couldn't look away.

My father continued.

"I knew one day you would come to Falcon Ridge."

The screen showed him placing a folder on a desk.

"I also knew people would try to convince you that I was something I wasn't."

My heart raced.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

Every person I met had a different version of my father.

A hero.

A secret agent.

A traitor.

A victim.

But nobody had ever given me the truth.

The recording continued.

"Elena, there are three things you need to understand."

The first appeared on the screen.

"One: Do not trust anyone who claims they protected me."

The second appeared.

"Two: Elias Voss was never my enemy."

I looked at Daniel.

He looked equally shocked.

The third message appeared.

"Three: The person who betrayed me was someone you already know."

The screen went black.

The office became silent.

I stared at the empty wall.

Someone I already knew.

My mind immediately went through every person connected to this investigation.

General Cole.

Captain Vane.

Kyle Brody.

Daniel.

Everyone.

"Your father knew this would happen," Daniel whispered.

I turned toward him.

"How?"

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Because he prepared for it."

"Prepared for what?"

"For you."

That answer made me angry.

Not because of Daniel.

Because my entire life suddenly felt like a plan someone else had written.

My father had left clues.

People had watched me.

Everyone seemed to know where I would go before I got there.

I wanted answers.

Not another mystery.

I walked toward the desk.

The one from the recording.

The one my father had used.

I searched through the drawers.

Nothing.

Empty.

Then I noticed something.

A small scratch beneath the wooden surface.

Three numbers.

07-14.

Again.

The same date.

I pressed the area.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small metal box.

No lock.

No label.

Just my name.

ELENA.

I opened it carefully.

Inside were several documents.

Photographs.

And a small recording device.

The first photograph showed my father standing beside Elias Voss.

But this time, the image was different.

They were not enemies.

They were working together.

The second photograph showed General Cole.

And beside him...

Kyle Brody.

But Brody looked younger.

Much younger.

The third photograph made me stop.

It showed my father.

Holding a baby.

Me.

On the back of the photograph was handwriting.

"My greatest mission was keeping her alive."

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I wasn't Colonel Hayes.

I was just a daughter trying to understand why her father had left behind a trail of secrets.

Then the recording device activated.

My father's voice returned.

"If you found the box, then Elias was right."

I froze.

"Elias was right?"

The recording continued.

"The person who betrayed me is not someone outside this organization."

A pause.

"It is someone who stood beside me."

A document fell from the box.

I picked it up.

A personnel list.

My eyes moved down the page.

Names.

Dates.

Assignments.

Then one name was highlighted.

Captain Marcus Vane.

I looked at Daniel.

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"That doesn't make sense."

The recording continued.

"Elena, if Marcus Vane is with you, be careful."

My blood ran cold.

"Because he knows more than he admits."

I immediately looked around the office.

Daniel noticed.

"What?"

"Where is Vane?"

Neither of us had seen him since the security room.

That bothered me.

Because Vane had been there for every discovery.

Every secret.

Every step.

And now he was gone.

A phone suddenly rang.

The sound echoed through the empty office.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Who is this?"

A familiar voice replied.

"Colonel Hayes."

Captain Marcus Vane.

My expression changed.

"Where are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"Trying to stop the biggest mistake of your life."

I stood still.

"You were the one who gave me the photograph."

"Yes."

"You were investigating Brody."

"Yes."

"Then why did my father warn me about you?"

Silence.

The silence lasted too long.

"Because your father was wrong about one thing."

"What?"

"He thought he knew who betrayed him."

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What are you saying?"

Vane lowered his voice.

"I found the person who actually killed your father."

The room went quiet.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Who?"

I put the phone on speaker.

Vane continued.

"The same person who has been controlling Falcon Ridge for years."

"Name."

A pause.

Then he said:

"General Richard Cole."

My eyes moved immediately toward the door.

Because something didn't feel right.

Not because I believed him.

Because I didn't know who to believe anymore.

"Where are you?"

"I can prove it."

"Where?"

"Old command bunker beneath Falcon Ridge."

I looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because that bunker was sealed after your father's death."

I looked back at the phone.

"Captain, why would you send me there?"

Vane's voice became quieter.

"Because that's where your father left the final evidence."

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Daniel looked worried.

"This is exactly what they want."

"Who?"

"Everyone."

That answer frustrated me.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, Falcon Ridge continued moving.

Aircraft.

Soldiers.

Normal operations.

But underneath everything was a hidden war.

A war fought with information.

Secrets.

And people who disappeared.

"I need the truth."

Daniel looked at me.

"Even if it hurts?"

I looked back.

"Especially if it hurts."

We moved toward the old command bunker.

The entrance was hidden beneath a forgotten section of the base.

The kind of place nobody visited.

The kind of place that existed only in old records.

The door was massive.

Covered in rust.

But the access panel was active.

Someone had recently used it.

Daniel looked at the screen.

"That's impossible."

"What?"

"The bunker has been offline for years."

I entered my authorization code.

The system rejected it.

Then another message appeared.

"ACCESS GRANTED."

Daniel stared.

"Who authorized that?"

Before I could answer, the door slowly opened.

Inside was darkness.

But one light was already on.

Someone was waiting.

We stepped inside.

The room contained old computers.

Documents.

Files.

Evidence.

Everything my father had hidden.

Then I saw something on the main desk.

A folder.

My name on it.

But underneath my name was another word.

"DAUGHTER."

I reached for it.

Then the bunker speakers turned on.

A voice filled the room.

Not my father's.

Not Vane's.

Not Cole's.

A voice I had never heard before.

"Elena Hayes."

The voice paused.

"You finally found the place your father died trying to protect."

Daniel froze.

I looked toward the speakers.

"Who are you?"

The answer came immediately.

"I am the person your father spent ten years trying to stop."

The lights suddenly flickered.

The folder on the desk opened by itself.

A photograph slid out.

May you like

My father's final photograph.

And standing beside him was the person I never expected to see.
