Chapter 6 - The Colonel’s Final Investigation

The first thing I noticed was the silence.
Not the kind of silence that came from an empty room.
The kind that came after someone powerful left.
General Richard Cole had disappeared.
One second he was standing beside me.
The next second, he was gone.
The office door was closed.
Locked.
And nobody had seen him leave.
I stared at the empty space where he had been standing.
Daniel Reeves looked equally confused.
For years, Daniel had hidden from the people controlling Falcon Ridge.
But now even he looked afraid.
"How did he do that?" I asked.
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know."
That was the answer I hated the most.
Because every person connected to this mystery kept saying the same thing.
They didn't know.
They didn't understand.
They were just surviving.
But I wasn't here to survive.
I was here to find the truth.
I looked back at the security monitor.
The image of Kyle Brody standing inside the old maintenance hangar was still frozen on the screen.
Beside him was the person holding the folder marked with my family name.
"HAYES."
A name that had followed me since I arrived.
A name that apparently meant something much bigger than I understood.
"Daniel."
He looked at me.
"How much do you know about Elias Voss?"
His expression immediately changed.
That was enough.
He knew.
"I know his name."
"That's not an answer."
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
Then lowered his voice.
"Elena, there are things about Elias that even your father couldn't expose."
"My father spent years trying to expose him."
"Yes."
"Then why did he fail?"
Daniel hesitated.
Because the answer was probably worse than the question.
"Because your father trusted the wrong people."
The words hit harder than I expected.
I thought about the photograph.
The scratched-out face.
The warning.
Trust nobody who tells you I died.
My entire life had been built around one version of my father.
A hero.
A commander.
A man who sacrificed everything.
But now I wondered how much of that story was real.
"Where is Brody now?"
Daniel looked at the monitor.
"He is waiting for you."
"Why?"
"Because he knows something is about to happen."
I picked up my jacket.
"Then let's find out what."
Daniel stepped in front of me.
"No."
I stopped.
"You're telling me not to go?"
"I'm telling you not to go alone."
I looked at him.
"That's exactly what the message said."
His expression became serious.
"Then maybe your father was right."
"About what?"
"That sometimes the person warning you is the person leading you into danger."
For the first time, I wondered if Daniel was protecting me.
Or protecting himself.
But I had no time to investigate feelings.
Only facts.
I walked toward the door.
The moment I opened it, alarms started again.
This time, not a security breach.
A command alert.
Every screen in the hallway switched on.
The entire base stopped.
Then a message appeared.
"ALL PERSONNEL REPORT TO MAIN HANGAR."
Daniel looked at the screen.
"They know."
"Who?"
He looked at me.
"Everyone."
Within minutes, soldiers began moving toward the main hangar.
Pilots.
Mechanics.
Officers.
Everyone.
It felt like the entire base had been summoned.
Exactly what someone wanted.
A public event.
A controlled stage.
I walked into the hangar.
And immediately saw him.
Sergeant Kyle Brody.
Standing in the center.
The same place where he had humiliated me.
The same place where he thought I was nobody.
But this time, things were different.
Because I was wearing my uniform.
My rank was visible.
My name was visible.
And everyone could see exactly who I was.
The reaction was immediate.
Whispers.
Confusion.
Shock.
The soldiers who had watched me get handcuffed the day before now stood frozen.
Brody looked at me.
For the first time since I met him, he looked uncertain.
But only briefly.
Then he smiled.
A fake smile.
The kind people used when they were losing control.
"Colonel Hayes."
His voice carried across the hangar.
"I see you finally decided to introduce yourself."
I walked closer.
"You already knew."
The crowd became quiet.
Brody didn't answer.
That was his mistake.
Silence was an admission.
"You knew who I was before you ordered the military police to handcuff me."
His eyes moved around the room.
Looking for support.
Nobody spoke.
"Colonel, I think there has been a misunderstanding."
I almost laughed.
"A misunderstanding?"
I stopped a few feet away.
"You grabbed an officer."
"I believed you were unauthorized personnel."
"You ignored my warning."
"You refused to identify yourself."
"You never asked."
The words landed.
Because everyone heard them.
Brody looked uncomfortable.
But then something changed.
He became calm again.
Too calm.
Like someone had reminded him that he wasn't alone.
"You want answers?"
He asked.
"Fine."
He reached into his pocket.
Several officers immediately became tense.
But Brody only removed a small device.
A recording.
He pressed play.
My own voice filled the hangar.
From yesterday.
"You should verify my identity."
Then another recording.
A conversation between me and Captain Vane.
Then another.
My private discussion with Daniel.
My eyes narrowed.
Someone had been recording everything.
Brody looked at the crowd.
"Colonel Hayes arrived here pretending to be someone else."
Nobody moved.
"She entered restricted areas."
He turned toward me.
"She investigated personnel without proper authorization."
The room became uncomfortable.
Because he was twisting the truth.
Making me look like the problem.
A classic strategy.
Control the story before someone else tells it.
Then Brody said the sentence I expected.
"Maybe the question isn't what happened to Daniel Reeves."
He paused.
"Maybe the question is why Colonel Hayes was hiding her identity."
The crowd looked at me.
Waiting.
I stepped forward.
"I hid my identity because I wanted to see how people behaved when they thought nobody important was watching."
A few soldiers looked down.
Because they knew exactly what they had witnessed.
Brody smiled.
"And what did you see?"
I looked directly at him.
"I saw a man who confuses fear with respect."
The hangar became silent.
Brody's face hardened.
Then something unexpected happened.
A voice came through the speakers.
Not Brody.
Not me.
Someone else.
"Enough."
Every person turned.
The large screen above the hangar activated.
A video appeared.
A man sat in darkness.
His face hidden.
But his voice was clear.
"I have been watching this base for years."
Brody immediately stepped backward.
Daniel looked terrified.
"That's him."
I turned.
"Elias Voss?"
Daniel nodded.
The voice continued.
"Colonel Hayes, you spent your entire life believing your father was a hero."
The screen flickered.
Then an old photograph appeared.
My father.
Standing beside Elias.
"You were wrong."
My chest tightened.
The entire hangar watched.
The voice continued.
"Your father didn't die protecting this country."
A pause.
"He died protecting you."
Nobody spoke.
Then another image appeared.
A document.
Signed by my father.
My eyes moved closer.
Because I recognized the signature.
But not the words.
The document title appeared.
"PROJECT HAYES."
Daniel whispered:
"No..."
The screen went black.
Then one final message appeared.
"Colonel Hayes, if you want to know why your father really died, open the file hidden beneath your command office."
I looked toward the exit.
Because suddenly I understood.
Someone wanted me to find something.
Something hidden.
Something my father left behind.
I walked back toward my office with Daniel following behind me.
Neither of us spoke.
The base was no longer hiding.
It was waiting.
When we reached my office, I noticed something immediately.
The door was slightly open.
I had locked it.
Daniel stopped.
"Elena."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He pointed.
"Your office."
Slowly, I reached for the handle.
It moved before I touched it.
May you like
The door opened from the inside.
And my father's voice came from the darkness.
