Chapter 7 - When the Past Returns for Revenge

Ryan Carter thought the hardest part was admitting he was wrong.

He was mistaken.

The hardest part was accepting that being sorry did not instantly fix anything.

For most of his life, Ryan had believed every problem had a solution if you had enough money, enough confidence, or enough influence.

A business deal went wrong?

Negotiate.

A person became upset?

Apologize just enough.

A reputation was damaged?

Control the story.

That was how Ryan lived.

Everything was a transaction.

Everything had a way to be repaired.

But Lena was different.

She did not want anything from him.

She did not want revenge.

She did not want him to suffer.

And somehow, that made it harder.

Because anger would have been easier.

If Lena hated him, Ryan could convince himself that she was bitter.

If she screamed at him, he could tell himself she was emotional.

If she demanded something from him, he could tell himself she was still attached.

But she did none of those things.

She simply moved on.

And Ryan was beginning to understand that losing someone who still cared was painful.

But losing someone who no longer needed you was something else entirely.

Several weeks passed after his visit to the Romano estate.

Ryan expected his life to slowly return to normal.

It did not.

The public attention eventually faded, but the consequences remained.

The business partners who distanced themselves did not return.

The people who once surrounded him because of his success were suddenly unavailable.

Invitations stopped coming.

Calls became shorter.

Meetings became colder.

Ryan finally understood something he had ignored for years.

Many people were not loyal to him.

They were loyal to the version of him that benefited them.

And now that version was disappearing.

One evening, Ryan sat alone in his office long after everyone had left.

The city lights reflected against the glass walls.

Years ago, he had looked at that same view and felt proud.

He remembered standing there after closing his first major deal.

He remembered telling Lena that one day they would have everything.

A beautiful home.

A successful company.

A perfect life.

And she believed him.

She always believed him.

Ryan opened an old drawer.

He was not sure why.

Maybe because he was tired of pretending.

Inside were things he had forgotten existed.

Old photographs.

A handwritten note.

A small envelope.

He picked up one photograph.

It was from years ago.

Before the money.

Before the suits.

Before Madison.

Before everything became complicated.

Ryan and Lena were sitting outside a small coffee shop.

They were laughing.

Real laughter.

Not the kind he displayed at expensive events.

Not the kind he performed for other people.

Real.

He stared at Lena’s face.

She looked happy.

And then he remembered something painful.

She had never asked him for luxury.

She had never asked him to become someone famous.

She only wanted him to be present.

And he failed at the one thing that mattered.

His phone rang.

Ryan looked down.

Unknown number.

For a moment, he considered ignoring it.

But something made him answer.

“Hello?”

A familiar voice responded.

“Ryan Carter?”

Ryan froze.

“Who is this?”

“My name is Victor Hale.”

Ryan frowned.

“I don’t know you.”

“You will.”

The confidence in the man's voice immediately made Ryan uncomfortable.

“What do you want?”

A short laugh.

“Interesting question.”

Ryan stood.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you spent years chasing power without realizing there were people above you.”

Ryan's expression changed.

“Get to the point.”

Victor continued.

“I know about Lena.”

The room became silent.

Ryan’s grip tightened around the phone.

“What about her?”

“I know who she is now.”

Ryan said nothing.

“And I know who her husband is.”

A warning instinct immediately appeared.

“Why do you care?”

“Because Alessandro Romano has enemies.”

Ryan looked out the window.

“Are you threatening him?”

“No.”

The answer came quickly.

“I’m offering information.”

Ryan remained silent.

Victor continued.

“You and Lena have history.”

Ryan frowned.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying sometimes the easiest way to hurt a powerful man is through the person he loves.”

The words made Ryan uncomfortable.

Because suddenly he understood.

This was not about him.

It was not about revenge.

It was about Alessandro.

And Lena was the target.

“I’m not interested,” Ryan said.

Victor laughed quietly.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“You hated losing her.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“I don’t hate anything.”

“Really?”

Victor’s voice became colder.

“Then why are you still thinking about her?”

Ryan ended the call.

But the damage was done.

The conversation stayed in his mind.

Not because he wanted Lena back.

Because for the first time, Ryan realized someone else might try to use the same weakness he once had.

Her.

The difference was…

He was the person who hurt her.

And this person wanted to destroy her.

That was not something Ryan could ignore.

Meanwhile, Lena noticed something different about Alessandro.

He was quieter.

Not distant.

Just more alert.

She knew him well enough to notice small changes.

“You’re worried.”

Alessandro looked up from his documents.

“No.”

She raised an eyebrow.

He smiled slightly.

“You know that look doesn’t work on me.”

A small laugh escaped him.

“You’ve become very good at reading me.”

“You taught me.”

That answer softened his expression.

Because it was true.

Their relationship had always been built on honesty.

No games.

No pretending.

No trying to appear perfect.

“What happened?” Lena asked.

Alessandro looked at her.

“There are some movements I don’t like.”

“Because of me?”

His answer came immediately.

“No.”

Then he corrected himself.

“Because of people who think hurting you will hurt me.”

Lena became serious.

“Alessandro…”

“I know.”

He reached for her hand.

“I’m not afraid.”

She looked at him.

“But?”

“But I know the world we live in.”

Lena understood.

Alessandro had spent years building his position.

He knew danger.

He knew betrayal.

But what worried him was not himself.

It was her.

The woman who had already survived so much.

“I don’t want you to think you have to protect me from everything,” Lena said.

Alessandro looked at her.

“I don’t.”

“You do.”

He smiled.

“Maybe.”

A quiet moment passed.

Then he added:

“But protecting you doesn’t mean I think you’re weak.”

Lena listened.

“It means you matter.”

Those words stayed with her.

Because that was always the difference.

Ryan had protected his image.

Alessandro protected her heart.

The next morning, Ryan received another call.

This time from a private investigator he knew.

“Ryan.”

“What?”

“There’s a problem.”

Ryan immediately became alert.

“What kind of problem?”

“The man who contacted you.”

Ryan froze.

“You know about him?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And you should stay away.”

“Why?”

The investigator hesitated.

“Because Victor Hale isn’t interested in helping you.”

Ryan stared ahead.

“Then what does he want?”

The answer came quietly.

“He wants access.”

“To what?”

A pause.

“To Lena.”

Ryan felt a sudden anger he had not expected.

Not jealousy.

Not possession.

Something else.

Protectiveness.

And he hated that it surprised him.

Because for years, he had treated Lena like someone who belonged in his past.

But now, when someone else tried to use her…

He felt the need to stand between them.

Maybe because he finally understood her value.

Maybe because guilt had finally become something more than regret.

Maybe because somewhere deep inside, Ryan still wanted to prove he was not the person he had become.

That evening, Ryan made a decision.

A decision that would change everything.

He picked up his phone.

Found Lena’s number.

The same number he had deleted and recovered from an old backup.

He stared at the screen.

Then typed:

You need to be careful. Someone is trying to use you to get to Alessandro.

He hesitated.

His finger hovered over send.

For years, Ryan had always acted because he wanted something.

Attention.

Success.

Approval.

But this time was different.

There was nothing in it for him.

No reward.

No benefit.

Maybe Lena would ignore him.

Maybe she would never forgive him.

Maybe she would think he was lying.

But he sent the message anyway.

Because for the first time in his life…

Ryan Carter did something without asking what he would gain.

And somewhere inside the Romano estate, Lena’s phone lit up.

She looked at the message.

Then at Alessandro.

Because the past she thought was finished…

Had just returned.

But this time, Ryan was not the person she needed protection from.

May you like

This time…

He might be the only warning she had.
