Chapter 4 - The Beginning of His Fall

Ryan Carter had spent his entire life believing that reputation was something you built.
Something you controlled.
Something you could shape with enough money, enough confidence, and enough people around you telling you how great you were.
But that morning, Ryan learned something he had never considered.
A reputation could also collapse.
And sometimes it only took one moment.
One video.
One mistake.
One person who finally decided not to stay silent.
Ryan stared at his phone, scrolling through the comments again and again.
He had read them so many times that the words no longer felt real.
“This guy is disgusting.”
“Imagine humiliating someone who used to love you.”
“The woman looked completely calm. He looked insecure.”
“Who is the man who came to protect her?”
That last question appeared thousands of times.
And Ryan hated it.
Because everyone wanted to know about Alessandro Romano.
Not him.
For years, Ryan had worked to become someone people noticed.
He built a successful image.
He wore expensive suits.
He attended exclusive events.
He made sure people saw him standing beside the right people.
But now, in one day, the entire internet was interested in someone else.
The quiet woman he mocked.
The woman he believed had nothing.
Ryan threw the phone onto the table.
“This is ridiculous.”
Madison sat across from him, silent.
That was unusual.
Madison always had something to say.
She always knew how to turn a situation into something entertaining.
But today she looked different.
Concerned.
“Ryan…”
He looked up.
“What?”
She hesitated.
“Maybe you should make a statement.”
Ryan laughed.
“A statement?”
“Yes.”
“About what?”
Madison looked at him carefully.
“About what happened.”
Ryan leaned back.
“So I apologize for a misunderstanding?”
Madison did not answer.
Because they both knew it was not a misunderstanding.
The video showed everything.
His expression.
His words.
His attitude.
There was no way to explain it away.
Ryan stood up.
“This will disappear.”
Madison frowned.
“Ryan.”
“What?”
“You don’t understand.”
He looked at her.
“What don’t I understand?”
She lowered her voice.
“This isn’t just about the video anymore.”
Ryan stared.
“What does that mean?”
Madison looked at her phone.
“The name Romano is everywhere.”
The room became quiet.
Ryan already knew.
That was the part that scared him.
Not the comments.
Not the criticism.
The Romano name.
Because people like Alessandro Romano did not become powerful by accident.
They became powerful because they knew how to protect what belonged to them.
And now Ryan had publicly humiliated the person Alessandro loved most.
Ryan tried to convince himself it was nothing.
That Lena was still just Lena.
But every time he thought that, he remembered the way Alessandro looked at her.
Not like a possession.
Like something precious.
Something worth protecting.
And Ryan hated that.
Because he had never looked at Lena that way.
Not once.
Meanwhile, across the city, Lena sat in her office reviewing documents.
Her life was completely different from what Ryan imagined.
She was not living in the shadow of Alessandro.
She had her own achievements.
Her own goals.
Her own identity.
That was something Ryan never understood.
When he saw her with Alessandro, he assumed she had simply found someone powerful.
Someone who could give her the life she wanted.
But he never realized the truth.
Alessandro did not create Lena’s strength.
He recognized it.
A knock came at the door.
“Come in.”
Her assistant entered.
“Lena, there’s something you should see.”
Lena looked up.
“What happened?”
The assistant hesitated.
“The video from the mall.”
Lena immediately understood.
She looked away for a moment.
“I don’t want it taken down.”
Her assistant looked surprised.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Lena closed the folder in front of her.
“Because I spent years being afraid of what people would think.”
She paused.
“I’m not doing that anymore.”
The assistant nodded.
“But there are a lot of negative comments about him.”
Lena was quiet.
She did not feel satisfaction.
She did not feel revenge.
She simply felt tired.
Because seeing Ryan again reminded her of a version of herself she had worked hard to leave behind.
The woman who apologized for taking up space.
The woman who believed love meant accepting pain.
The woman who thought losing one person meant losing everything.
She was not that woman anymore.
“Lena.”
She looked up.
“Are you okay?”
A small smile appeared.
“Yes.”
And this time, it was true.
Later that evening, Alessandro found her standing by the window.
He knew that look.
“You’re thinking about him.”
Lena smiled slightly.
“Is it that obvious?”
“To me.”
She looked at him.
“You always know.”
Alessandro walked closer.
“That’s because I pay attention.”
Those simple words meant more than Ryan would ever understand.
Because Ryan had spent years looking at Lena.
But he had never truly seen her.
Alessandro did.
“What happens now?” Lena asked.
“With Ryan?”
She nodded.
Alessandro looked thoughtful.
“That depends on what he chooses.”
Lena turned toward him.
“You’re not angry?”
“I am.”
His answer was immediate.
“But anger doesn’t decide what happens next.”
That was one of the reasons Lena trusted him.
Alessandro was powerful.
Everyone knew that.
But his power came from control.
Not cruelty.
“He hurt you,” Alessandro said.
“Yes.”
“And he embarrassed you.”
“Yes.”
“Then he has to face the consequences.”
Lena looked down.
“I don’t want him destroyed.”
Alessandro studied her.
“You still care.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
A pause.
“I just don’t want to become someone like him.”
The answer made Alessandro smile.
Because that was Lena.
Even after everything.
She still chose kindness.
But across town, Ryan was choosing something else.
Panic.
He called three different people that night.
Business contacts.
Friends.
People he thought had influence.
But the responses were different.
One person did not answer.
Another said they would “look into it.”
A third simply told him:
“Ryan, you should probably handle this carefully.”
Carefully.
That word bothered him.
Because it meant people were afraid.
Not for him.
Of what might happen because of him.
The next morning, Ryan arrived at his company expecting things to return to normal.
They did not.
Employees looked at him differently.
Executives avoided conversations.
A meeting that had been scheduled for weeks was suddenly postponed.
His assistant walked into his office with a nervous expression.
“Ryan?”
He looked up.
“What?”
“There’s something else.”
He sighed.
“What now?”
She placed a folder on his desk.
“Several partners are reconsidering their contracts.”
Ryan stared.
“What?”
“They’re concerned about the recent attention.”
His jaw tightened.
“This is because of a video?”
The assistant said nothing.
That silence answered everything.
Ryan stood.
“This is insane.”
But deep down, he knew.
It was not about a video.
It was about what the video revealed.
The real Ryan.
Not the successful businessman.
Not the confident man in expensive clothing.
The man who needed to make someone else feel small to feel important.
That afternoon, Ryan received a message from an unknown number.
One sentence.
We need to talk.
He stared at the screen.
For a moment, he wondered if it was Alessandro.
His heart tightened.
Then another message arrived.
About Lena.
Ryan froze.
Because suddenly, he realized something.
The mall incident was not the end.
It was the beginning.
The past he thought he had buried was coming back.
May you like
And this time…
He would not be the person with control.
