Chapter 14 - The Woman Renzo Chose

Gianna arrived twenty minutes later.
The woman introduced herself as Dr. Helena Cross.
She had treated Marisol secretly after the attack that killed her.
Marisol survived for six hours.
Long enough to record one final statement.
Gianna sat beside Leora.
They listened together.
Marisol revealed that Gianna’s biological mother had not simply abandoned her.
She had discovered Conrad’s involvement in the undercover operation and fled after receiving threats.
Conrad had allowed Gianna to believe she left voluntarily because the truth would have placed her in danger.
Gianna broke down.
“Is she alive?”
Helena nodded.
“Yes.”
Gianna covered her mouth.
“Where?”
“Colorado.”
She had lived under another name for twenty years.
Gianna looked at Leora.
For once, Leora knew exactly what it felt like to learn a dead part of your childhood was still alive somewhere.
She took Gianna’s hand.
The recording continued.
Marisol spoke about Leora.
About how quiet she had become after Elias disappeared.
About her habit of making herself smaller when rooms became angry.
Then Marisol said something Leora would carry forever.
“Little Lark, being overlooked is something people did to you. It is not who you are.”
Leora cried.
Not neatly.
Not invisibly.
Renzo sat beside her.
When the recording ended, nobody spoke.
Eventually Gianna left with Helena to contact her mother.
Elias remained.
Leora looked at him.
“I’m angry.”
“You should be.”
“I love you.”
His eyes closed.
“I love you too.”
“I’m still angry.”
“You can be both.”
That was enough for now.
Months passed.
Trials began.
Isabella pleaded not guilty but faced overwhelming financial evidence.
Pierce’s cooperation exposed additional officials.
Tarquin received a reduced sentence after testifying.
Conrad pleaded guilty to obstruction and unlawful surveillance.
His cooperation and evidence were considered at sentencing.
Salvatore admitted his earlier role in the criminal network and testified extensively.
The Matera businesses underwent independent audits.
Renzo voluntarily separated himself from several entities until investigators cleared them.
Leora refused every offer to work for him.
That amused him.
“I pay well.”
“I know.”
“You’ve reviewed my payroll?”
“I review everything.”
Instead, she created Vance Forensic Group.
Her first major project was administering the restitution foundation.
Not as Renzo’s employee.
Not as Conrad’s invisible accountant.
Herself.
Gianna came to the office one afternoon.
She wore jeans.
Leora nearly fainted theatrically.
“Don’t start.”
“How far we’ve fallen.”
Gianna laughed.
She had reconnected with her biological mother slowly.
Painfully.
Honestly.
Nothing was magically repaired.
That made it real.
That evening, Renzo took Leora to dinner.
A normal restaurant this time.
There were even other customers.
“You’re learning,” she said.
“I hated every second.”
After dinner they walked along the river.
Renzo stopped.
“I need to ask you something.”
Leora immediately pointed at him.
“If a ring appears, I’m leaving.”
He looked offended.
“I have some restraint.”
“Questionable.”
He reached into his coat.
Leora stared.
He removed the white handkerchief.
M-417.
She laughed.
“You scared me.”
“Good.”
He unfolded it.
Inside was no ring.
Only a key.
“What is this?”
“An office.”
“I have an office.”
“A second one.”
“Why?”
“The foundation needs a permanent headquarters.”
Leora stared.
He had purchased the building Marisol and Elias once planned to use as a legal advocacy center.
It would now house financial investigators, victim advocates, and attorneys.
“You bought me a building?”
“No.”
“Renzo.”
“I bought the foundation a building.”
“Better.”
“The deed belongs to the foundation.”
“Much better.”
She kissed him.
It was not dramatic.
No audience.
No champagne.
Just two people who had learned that being chosen meant very little unless you were first allowed to remain yourself.
Then Renzo’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He handed it to Leora.
A federal investigator had sent one final recovered document from Isabella’s archive.
It was dated the night of the engagement gala.
At the bottom was an instruction written by Isabella herself.
IF THE OPERATION FAILS, TAKE LEORA VANCE.
Below it was an address.
Leora recognized it.
Her new foundation building.
Renzo looked toward the dark windows across the street.
A light had just turned on inside.
They had not opened the building yet.
Someone was already there.
Leora reached for the front door.
May you like
It was already unlocked from the inside.
And someone was waiting for her.
