Chapter 5 - The Vault Beneath the City

Julian Cros walked through the front door with blood on his white shirt.
Adrian's security officers surrounded him.
A torn ledger was tucked beneath his arm.
One page carried Eleanor Hale's signature.
Another carried Daniel Mercer's.
Someone in the house had been lying for twenty years.
Victoria moved first.
"Julian."
He looked terrible.
His suit jacket was gone.
His tie hung loose.
Blood had dried along his collar.
Adrian's security chief ordered him to raise his hands.
Julian complied.
"It's not my blood."
Cassandra stared at the ledger.
"Where did you get that?"
Julian looked at her.
"Your father's storage unit."
Daniel went rigid.
Adrian turned.
"Daniel?"
Daniel said nothing.
Victoria felt exhaustion transform into anger.
"Everybody stop."
The room obeyed.
Maybe because she was Adrian Hale's daughter.
Maybe because every person there understood that the only individual who had not known the truth was finally done being managed.
Victoria pointed toward the living room.
"Everyone sits."
Julian almost smiled.
It vanished when she looked at him.
"Now."
Five minutes later, Adrian stood near the fireplace.
Daniel and Cassandra sat apart.
Julian occupied a chair opposite Victoria.
Security remained by the doors.
The ledger rested on the coffee table.
Victoria said, "I am going to ask questions. One person answers at a time. If anyone lies, we're finished."
Julian looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked at Cassandra.
Victoria snapped, "Look at me."
They did.
She started with Julian.
"What happened to you?"
"I went to Daniel's storage unit."
"Why?"
"I've known about it for years."
Daniel scoffed.
Julian ignored him.
"I thought the original ledger might still be there."
"Why tonight?"
"Because the moment your father arrived at the gala, I knew North Coast would investigate the refinancing."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"So you intended to destroy evidence."
Julian said, "Some evidence."
Victoria leaned forward.
"Careful."
Julian closed his eyes briefly.
"Yes. Initially."
"Then?"
"I found this."
He nodded toward the ledger.
"And someone attacked me."
"Who?"
"I didn't see his face."
Daniel laughed coldly.
"Convenient."
Julian looked at him.
"I saw the tattoo on his wrist."
Daniel stopped laughing.
Victoria noticed.
"What tattoo?"
"An anchor crossed by a line."
Adrian frowned.
"Marwick security."
Daniel's face had changed.
Victoria asked, "What does that mean?"
Adrian answered.
"Twenty years ago Marwick Logistics used an internal security unit. Some executives used ex-military contractors."
"Who ran it?"
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Daniel spoke reluctantly.
"Thomas Cros."
Julian's father.
Victoria looked at Julian.
"Your father ran security and finance?"
"For a period."
Daniel shook his head.
"He ran theft."
Julian stood.
"My father was many things. He wasn't working alone."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Sit down."
Julian sat.
Victoria opened the ledger.
Numbers filled each page.
Corporate names.
Dates.
Initials.
E.H.
T.C.
D.M.
She pointed.
"D.M.?"
Daniel answered.
"Daniel Mercer."
"What were you doing?"
"Auditing."
Julian laughed bitterly.
"That's his version."
Victoria turned.
"What's yours?"
"My father believed Daniel designed the transfer network."
Cassandra whispered, "No."
Julian looked at her.
"You don't know your father as well as you think."
She stood.
"Shut up."
"Cassandra."
"Don't call me that."
Her anger surprised Victoria.
Julian said, "Your father used Eleanor's secret fund as camouflage. Money disappeared inside legitimate charity transfers."
Daniel slammed his palm on the table.
"Thomas stole it."
"Then why is your authorization code beside fourteen transfers?"
Daniel froze.
Victoria looked down.
There it was.
DM-91.
Repeated.
Daniel's voice became controlled.
"Because I authorized investigative transfers to trace Thomas."
Julian asked, "Into accounts you controlled?"
"They were temporary."
"One still exists."
Cassandra looked at Daniel.
"Dad?"
He avoided her eyes.
Victoria felt another piece move.
"How much?"
Julian answered.
"Forty-three million dollars."
Adrian's face hardened.
Daniel said, "That money never belonged to me."
"Then where is it?"
"Still protected."
"For whom?"
Daniel looked at Victoria.
"For her."
Victoria laughed in disbelief.
"Don't use my name to explain your secrets."
Daniel stood.
"I promised your mother."
"My mother wrote that I should trust you."
"She did."
"Then why didn't you tell me Cassandra was your daughter?"
Daniel's mouth tightened.
"Because I knew what it would look like."
"It looks like you sent your daughter to sleep with my husband."
Cassandra whispered, "He didn't."
Victoria turned toward her.
"Then tell me."
Cassandra's face crumpled slightly.
"I didn't tell him about Julian until months after I joined Cros Dynamics."
Daniel looked furious.
"I told her to leave."
"You told me to collect proof first."
"I told you to collect documents."
Cassandra's shame returned.
"Everything else was my mistake."
Victoria looked away.
She was too tired to hate Cassandra cleanly.
People wanted betrayal to have clear boundaries.
But Cassandra had wronged her and perhaps saved her at the same time.
Julian had loved her and used her.
Daniel might have protected her while lying.
Her father might be the only person in the room whose sins she already understood.
Adrian said, "We go to the vault."
Daniel shook his head.
"Not tonight."
Julian immediately said, "Tonight."
Victoria looked between them.
"Why?"
Daniel answered, "The Marwick underground records facility isn't safe."
Julian laughed.
"Because you don't want us finding what's there."
Daniel stood.
"You think your father left you some heroic confession?"
"I think he left proof."
"Of what?"
"That Eleanor Hale's death wasn't as simple as everybody was told."
Adrian crossed the room in two strides.
He grabbed Julian's shirt.
"Do not use my wife's death to manipulate my daughter."
Julian did not fight him.
"I'm not."
"Adrian," Victoria said.
Her father released him.
She looked at Julian.
"What do you know about Mom's death?"
"Very little."
"But something."
Julian nodded.
"My father wrote that Eleanor discovered the person behind the theft shortly before she died."
"Who?"
"He never named them."
"Why?"
"He was afraid."
Daniel scoffed.
"Thomas wasn't afraid of anyone."
Julian looked directly at him.
"He was afraid of you."
Silence.
Daniel went pale.
Cassandra whispered, "Dad?"
Daniel's voice became hard.
"Thomas hated me."
"His letter says otherwise."
Julian pulled a folded page from inside his shirt.
Victoria recognized the torn edge.
The missing final paragraph from Thomas's letter.
Julian handed it to her.
She read.
If Eleanor Hale discovers what we did, everything ends.
The woman who can lead you to the trust is Victoria.
But do not trust Mercer. He serves someone closer to Hale than any of us understood.
Victoria reread the final sentence.
Someone closer to Hale.
She looked at Adrian.
"Who?"
Her father shook his head.
"I don't know."
Daniel said, "Thomas was trying to divide us."
"He's dead," Victoria replied. "He doesn't benefit from dividing anyone now."
Daniel looked wounded.
"I protected your mother."
"Then come to the vault."
Silence.
Finally Daniel nodded.
"Fine."
At 2:14 a.m., three vehicles entered a fenced industrial lot along Boston Harbor.
The original Marwick office building had been torn down a decade earlier.
A warehouse now occupied the property.
But beneath it, Daniel led them through an old maintenance corridor.
Cassandra remained upstairs with security.
Victoria, Adrian, Julian, Daniel, and two guards descended.
Concrete stairs.
Metal walls.
Dust.
At the bottom stood rows of abandoned record cages.
Locker 417 was at the far end.
Daniel handed Victoria the brass key.
"You open it."
She inserted it.
Turned.
Click.
The narrow locker contained one metal case.
Victoria removed it.
Inside was a VHS tape.
A digital recorder.
Three folders.
And a photograph.
Adrian picked up the photo.
His hand started shaking.
Eleanor.
Victoria's mother.
She was sitting at a table.
Thomas Cros stood opposite her.
Daniel stood behind him.
And beside Eleanor sat another person.
Victoria stared.
"Dad?"
Adrian's face had emptied.
The woman beside Eleanor looked remarkably similar to Victoria.
Older.
Same eyes.
Same jawline.
Victoria had seen her only in photographs.
"That's Aunt Margaret."
Adrian said nothing.
Margaret Hale.
Adrian's younger sister.
Officially dead for nineteen years.
A boating accident off Nantucket.
No body recovered.
Victoria looked at Daniel.
"Why is my dead aunt sitting with my mother one year before Mom died?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Because Margaret didn't die."
Adrian stepped backward.
"You knew?"
Daniel said nothing.
Adrian grabbed him.
"You knew my sister was alive?"
"I was ordered to keep her hidden."
"By whom?"
Daniel looked toward the photograph.
"Eleanor."
Victoria's pulse thundered.
"Why?"
Daniel whispered, "Because Margaret was the person who created the Independence Fund."
That made no sense.
Victoria looked at Adrian.
Her father seemed genuinely shattered.
"The trust was Eleanor's."
Daniel shook his head.
"The purpose was Eleanor's."
"Then what did Margaret do?"
"She designed the financial structure."
Julian opened one of the folders.
He froze.
"Victoria."
She turned.
"What?"
He held up a legal document.
The Hale Independence Fund.
Successor beneficiary:
VICTORIA ELAINE HALE.
Contingent administrator:
MARGARET HALE.
Status:
ACTIVE.
Victoria stared.
"If she's alive..."
Daniel nodded.
"She may still control access."
A faint mechanical sound came from behind the records cages.
One of Adrian's guards raised his flashlight.
"Who's there?"
Nothing.
Then the digital recorder inside the case suddenly activated by itself.
Static filled the vault.
A woman's voice spoke.
Adrian's face collapsed.
He knew that voice.
Victoria did too.
Her dead mother.
"If Victoria is hearing this, Margaret found her."
The recording stopped.
May you like
At that exact moment, a metal door at the far end of the vault unlocked.
And a woman on the other side said Victoria's name.
