Chapter 4 - The Woman Julian Never Expected to Betray Him

Victoria pushed open Julian's office door before security could stop her.
A woman stood beside the open safe.
Cassandra Blake held a flash drive in one hand.
Blood stained the other.
She looked at Victoria and whispered one sentence.
"Your husband is going to kill me."
Then the lights went out.
"Cassandra!"
Victoria heard movement.
A chair struck something.
Security flashlights snapped on seconds later.
Cassandra was still there.
She had collapsed against the desk.
Adrian's security chief entered first, scanning every corner.
"No one else."
Victoria knelt beside Cassandra.
The blood came from a deep cut across her palm.
Not a gunshot.
Not a stab wound.
Broken glass covered the floor near the safe.
Cassandra stared at Adrian.
Then at Daniel.
Her face changed when she recognized Daniel.
"You."
Daniel froze.
"You know me?"
Cassandra laughed weakly.
"Everybody in this mess knows you."
Victoria's patience disappeared.
"Start talking."
Cassandra looked at her.
"I didn't sleep with Julian because I loved him."
The sentence should have brought relief.
It didn't.
Victoria asked, "Did you sleep with him?"
Cassandra looked away.
"Yes."
"Then the reason isn't especially comforting."
"I know."
Adrian said, "Who sent you here?"
Cassandra pressed a napkin against her hand.
"No one."
Daniel stepped closer.
"You're lying."
She glared at him.
"I was trying to copy the files before Julian destroyed them."
"What files?"
Cassandra lifted the flash drive.
"Everything."
Victoria did not reach for it.
"What is everything?"
Cassandra took a breath.
"I joined Cros Dynamics eighteen months ago because my father lost his retirement savings in one of Thomas Cros's shell companies twenty years ago."
Victoria frowned.
"Julian's father?"
"Yes."
"Thomas is dead."
"Doesn't mean the money disappeared."
Cassandra looked at Julian's safe.
"My father spent fifteen years trying to prove Thomas had stolen from dozens of employees. Then he died."
Her voice tightened.
"I kept investigating."
Victoria looked at the flash drive.
"And it led to Julian."
"Eventually."
"So you became his mistress."
Cassandra flinched.
"I became someone he trusted."
"By sleeping with my husband."
"Yes."
The honesty hurt more than excuses.
Victoria stood.
"Why should I believe anything you say?"
"You shouldn't."
That stopped her.
Cassandra met her eyes.
"You should verify it."
Adrian looked almost approving.
Daniel didn't.
"What are the Verdant payments?" he asked.
Cassandra answered immediately.
"Money Julian used to hide liquidity outside Cros Dynamics."
"Why send it to a company you own?"
"Because he thinks he owns me."
Victoria absorbed that.
"He transferred twenty-one million dollars to you."
"He transferred it into accounts he controls through powers of attorney."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"So Verdant is a parking structure."
"Yes."
"For what?"
Cassandra looked at Victoria.
"The moment North Coast released the refinancing money, Julian planned to move approximately one hundred million offshore."
Victoria's stomach twisted.
"And leave Cros Dynamics insolvent?"
"Eventually."
"What about employees?"
"He didn't care."
"What about shareholders?"
"He had an exit plan."
Daniel said, "And Victoria?"
Cassandra's silence answered first.
Victoria crossed her arms.
"What was his plan for me?"
Cassandra swallowed.
"Divorce."
That was expected.
Then Cassandra continued.
"After your family assets became reachable."
Victoria felt the room go silent.
"Explain."
"Julian learned about the Eleanor Hale Independence Fund before he met you."
Confirmation.
Still, hearing it hurt.
"His father left research. Names. Corporate structures. Partial account numbers. But Julian needed a beneficiary with standing to activate certain provisions."
"Me."
"Yes."
Adrian turned away, furious.
Cassandra continued.
"He didn't initially know exactly how much you controlled. He only knew it was substantial."
Victoria asked, "Did he deliberately meet me?"
Cassandra hesitated.
"Yes."
One word destroyed six years.
Victoria closed her eyes.
Not because she was weak.
Because she refused to let Cassandra watch that truth enter her.
When she opened them, her voice was steady.
"How?"
"Julian paid a private investigator to learn your routines. The bookstore where you met wasn't accidental."
Victoria remembered spilled coffee.
The apologetic smile.
Do you always read books that depressing?
She had laughed.
He had practiced it.
Maybe.
Or maybe the coffee had actually spilled.
That was the cruelty of discovering manipulation.
It poisoned even the pieces that might have been real.
"Why are you telling me now?"
Cassandra looked at the floor.
"Because I thought I could expose him without hurting you."
Victoria almost scoffed.
"You slept with him."
"I know."
"You walked into my house tonight wearing a gown while he told me I was embarrassing."
"I know."
"You kissed him in my driveway."
Cassandra's eyes filled.
"I know."
Victoria's voice sharpened.
"Then don't tell me you were protecting me."
Cassandra nodded slowly.
"You're right."
Silence.
"I wasn't."
That honesty disarmed Victoria again.
Cassandra continued.
"I was protecting my investigation. And eventually I stopped knowing where the investigation ended and my ego began."
She looked ashamed.
"He made me feel chosen. Powerful. I told myself it was useful."
A tear slipped down her cheek.
"It wasn't."
Victoria did not comfort her.
But she listened.
Adrian said, "Where is Julian now?"
"I don't know."
"Why did he return here?"
"To destroy the original ledger."
Daniel stiffened.
"What ledger?"
Cassandra pointed toward the open safe.
"Thomas Cros kept records of every transfer connected to the first attempt to steal from Eleanor's fund."
"Where is it?"
"Gone."
Victoria looked at the empty safe.
"Julian took it."
"Probably."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Everyone turned.
He stepped toward the safe.
"Thomas wouldn't trust his son with the original."
"You knew Thomas?" Victoria asked.
"Better than I wanted to."
Daniel ran his fingers along the safe's interior.
Then pressed against the rear panel.
Click.
A hidden compartment opened.
Empty.
Except for a small brass key.
Cassandra whispered, "That's new."
Daniel picked it up.
A number was engraved into the metal.
Adrian looked at him.
"Locker?"
"Could be."
Victoria asked, "Where?"
Daniel stared at the key.
"I've seen this numbering system."
"Where?"
"The old Marwick Logistics headquarters."
Adrian frowned.
"That building was demolished."
"The office building was."
Daniel looked at Victoria.
"The underground records vault wasn't."
Forty minutes later, no one had left.
Police had been notified about financial forgery but not yet about the hidden family investigation. Adrian's lawyers were already moving to freeze suspicious corporate accounts.
Victoria sat alone in the kitchen.
Her old dress lay upstairs.
The red gown shimmered under the recessed lights.
The absurd contrast almost made her laugh.
At seven o'clock she had believed her greatest humiliation was being left behind.
By midnight, she had learned her husband might have married her as part of a financial scheme.
Her phone vibrated.
JULIAN.
She stared.
Then answered.
"Where are you?"
His breathing was uneven.
"Victoria."
"Where are you?"
"Don't trust Cassandra."
Victoria looked toward the office where Cassandra sat with Daniel.
"Why?"
"Because she's not who she says she is."
"Neither are you."
Silence.
Julian said, "I can explain."
"Did you know who I was before you met me?"
Long pause.
"Victoria—"
"Yes or no."
"Yes."
Her heart broke quietly.
Even expecting it did not help.
She swallowed.
"Did you arrange our meeting?"
"Yes."
Cassandra had told the truth.
Victoria closed her eyes.
"Did you ever love me?"
This silence was different.
Longer.
Painful.
When Julian finally spoke, his voice cracked.
"That wasn't supposed to happen."
Victoria stopped breathing.
He continued.
"I knew who you were. I knew about the trust. I thought I could get close enough to learn what my father never figured out."
Victoria's eyes burned.
"But then I fell in love with you."
"No."
"I did."
"Don't."
"It's true."
"You forged my signature."
"I was trying to buy time."
"You pledged my house."
"I was going to replace the collateral."
"You slept with Cassandra."
Silence.
Victoria laughed once.
"So which part of that is love?"
Julian's voice dropped.
"The part that made everything more complicated."
"Love wasn't your complication, Julian."
"What was?"
"Your conscience."
He breathed hard.
"Listen. Cassandra hasn't told you everything."
"What hasn't she told me?"
"Ask her real last name."
Victoria looked toward the office.
"Cassandra Blake."
"No."
Julian's voice became urgent.
"Her legal name is Cassandra Mercer."
Victoria turned slowly.
Daniel Mercer stood across the hall.
He could not hear Julian.
"Cassandra is Daniel's daughter?"
"Yes."
Victoria's pulse raced.
"Why didn't he say that?"
"Because this isn't an investigation."
"What is it?"
"Daniel has been trying to reach the Independence Fund for twenty years."
Victoria looked at Daniel through the glass.
He was speaking calmly with Adrian.
Julian whispered, "The brass key is bait."
Her stomach tightened.
"What?"
"Don't take it to the Marwick vault."
"Why?"
"Because Daniel knows what's down there."
A floorboard creaked behind Victoria.
She turned.
Daniel stood in the kitchen doorway.
His eyes dropped to the phone in her hand.
"Who are you talking to?"
Victoria said nothing.
Julian's voice came through the speaker.
"Victoria, get away from him."
Daniel took one step forward.
Then Cassandra appeared behind him.
She looked at the brass key in her father's hand.
Her face went white.
"Dad..."
Daniel turned.
Cassandra whispered, "You told me that key was destroyed."
No one moved.
May you like
Daniel slowly closed his fist around it.
And the front door alarm suddenly announced that someone had entered the house.
