Chapter 4 - The Empire Beneath Her Silence

Julian answered on the third ring.
"What happened October seventeenth?"
Silence.
Then:
"Where did you hear that?"
Elena's grip tightened around the phone.
"Come back."
"Elena—"
"Now."
Twenty minutes later, Julian stood across from her.
Adrian remained by the windows.
Julian disliked his presence.
Elena did not care.
"My father died October seventeenth," she said.
"I know."
"Samuel told me to ask you about that night."
Julian's face changed.
"You spoke to Samuel Rourke?"
"Answer me."
Julian walked toward the bar.
He poured water instead of whiskey.
Elena noticed his hand trembling.
"I met your father that night."
Her entire body went still.
"Where?"
"Blackthorne."
"Why?"
"He summoned me."
"For what?"
Julian looked at her.
"You."
Elena said nothing.
"He knew I intended to propose."
"You'd already proposed."
"He knew before you did."
That sounded like Gabriel.
Julian continued.
"He told me there were things about your family I didn't understand. He offered me a choice."
"What choice?"
"Walk away from you and receive financing for every project I had planned."
Adrian swore quietly.
Elena stared.
"And?"
"I refused."
She had not expected that.
Julian looked at her.
"Your father laughed."
"He would."
"He said that was the only correct answer."
Elena's eyes burned.
"What happened afterward?"
"He gave me a drink. We talked for maybe forty minutes. Then I left."
"My father died three hours later."
"I know."
"Why did you never tell me?"
"Because he made me promise."
"He's dead."
"He asked me to protect your chance at a normal life."
Elena laughed bitterly.
"Everyone protected my normal life by lying to me."
Julian looked ashamed.
For once, she believed the emotion.
Adrian interrupted.
"What did Gabriel discuss besides Elena?"
Julian hesitated.
"Debt."
Elena looked at him.
"What debt?"
"He believed several Grayhaven companies were being deliberately overleveraged. Someone would lend money through shell entities, force defaults, then quietly acquire assets."
"The waterfront?"
"Part of it."
Julian looked at the documents.
"I think Gabriel bought the eastern district to stop them."
Elena finally understood the architecture of her inheritance.
Her father had not built an empire for her.
He had built a barricade.
"Who was buying everything?"
Julian shook his head.
"He wouldn't tell me."
A knock sounded.
Three short taps.
Then two.
Adrian moved toward the door.
"Wait."
Elena recognized the pattern.
Her father had used it.
She opened the door herself.
Samuel stood there.
Alive.
Exhausted.
Holding a leather briefcase.
Elena's anger overwhelmed her relief.
"You let me believe you were dead."
"Because people who believed that stopped looking for me."
"Who?"
Samuel entered.
"Victor Dane."
Julian went rigid.
Elena caught it.
"Dane."
Livia's surname.
Samuel nodded.
"Her father."
The room changed.
Samuel placed the briefcase on the table.
"Victor Dane has spent fifteen years acquiring influence through debt, political favors and compromised boards. Gabriel discovered it."
"Why wasn't he prosecuted?"
"Because evidence disappeared."
Samuel looked at Julian.
"And because people inside the Marcelli organization helped Dane."
"Who?"
Samuel opened the case.
Photographs.
Ledgers.
Contracts.
Elena examined them.
One photograph showed Gabriel with Victor Dane.
Another showed Samuel.
A third showed someone Elena recognized immediately.
Her father's younger brother.
Thomas Marcelli.
Her uncle.
The man who had vanished after Gabriel's funeral.
"Thomas?"
Samuel nodded.
"He gave Dane access."
Elena felt sick.
"Is he alive?"
Samuel's eyes lowered.
"I don't know."
Julian suddenly spoke.
"Livia."
Everyone looked at him.
"She wanted access to my waterfront files."
Elena's gaze sharpened.
"When?"
"Months ago."
"And you gave it to her."
Julian looked ashamed.
"Some."
Adrian stepped forward.
"How much?"
"Enough."
Elena understood the affair differently now.
It did not excuse Julian.
Nothing would.
But perhaps Livia's interest in him had never been romantic alone.
Samuel pulled out another document.
"Tonight's gala announcement forced Dane's hand. Elena's ownership is public now."
"What does that mean?" Elena asked.
"It means hiding is over."
Elena looked around the room.
At Julian.
At Adrian.
At Samuel.
Men who had all hidden truths from her in the name of protection.
"No," she said.
They waited.
"It means I'm done being hidden."
Samuel's expression softened.
"You sound like your father."
"I'd rather sound like myself."
Her old phone vibrated.
A message from Livia.
WE NEED TO TALK.
Elena stared at it.
Another followed.
JULIAN DOESN'T KNOW WHY I CHOSE HIM.
Then another.
MY FATHER KNOWS SAMUEL IS ALIVE.
Elena typed:
WHERE ARE YOU?
The response came immediately.
BLACKTHORNE. PRIVATE ROOM 7.
COME ALONE.
Samuel grabbed her wrist.
"No."
Elena looked down at his hand.
He released her.
"Sorry."
"She knows something."
"It's bait."
"Probably."
Julian stepped forward.
"Then I'm coming."
"No."
"She's been sleeping with me."
"An achievement you may contemplate privately."
Adrian coughed to hide a laugh.
Julian glared at him.
Elena picked up her coat.
"I'm going."
"Alone?" Samuel asked.
Elena slipped the Marcelli ring onto her finger.
"That's what she requested."
She reached Blackthorne fifteen minutes later.
The ballroom had emptied.
Private Room 7 waited at the end of a silent corridor.
The door was slightly open.
Elena pushed it.
"Livia?"
No answer.
A champagne glass lay shattered on the carpet.
Beside it was Livia's emerald evening bag.
Elena stepped inside.
The door closed behind her.
Then a man's voice came from the darkness.
"Gabriel's daughter."
Elena turned toward the voice.
May you like
The lights came on.
And the man seated at the table wore her father's missing ring.
