Chapter 3 - The Name Julian Never Knew

Elena left Blackthorne without explaining herself.
Adrian followed.
Julian followed them to the lobby.
"Where are you going?"
"Home."
"Our home."
Elena stopped.
"Interesting how quickly the pronoun returned."
"This isn't about the divorce anymore."
"For you."
Julian caught her arm.
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
Elena removed Julian's hand herself.
"Don't."
The quiet command stopped both men.
She entered Adrian's car.
Julian watched it disappear.
Twenty-two minutes later, Elena entered the penthouse.
Nothing appeared disturbed.
That frightened her more.
The hidden compartment remained open.
The ring case was empty.
The old telephone was with her.
The ivory folder remained.
She lifted it onto the bed.
Adrian stood near the door.
"Want me to open it?"
"No."
Elena broke the seal.
Inside were incorporation papers.
Property deeds.
Trust documents.
And one handwritten letter from her father.
Elena,
If you are reading this, someone has forced the Marcelli name back into your life.
I hoped you would never need it.
The family holdings were not divided after my death. They were consolidated.
You own them.
All of them.
Elena lowered the letter.
"That's impossible."
Adrian read over her shoulder.
"Apparently not."
She continued.
More than land had been placed into the trust.
Voting shares.
Debt instruments.
Private loans.
Minority interests in dozens of Grayhaven corporations.
Elena's eyes stopped.
VESCARI HOLDINGS.
She read the figure twice.
Thirty-one percent.
Her father's trust owned thirty-one percent of Julian's company.
"No."
Adrian's face darkened.
"Julian knows?"
"He can't."
But someone did.
Elena turned another page.
A memorandum dated eight years earlier revealed that Gabriel Marcelli had quietly financed Julian's first major acquisition.
Before Julian married Elena.
Before he claimed he had built everything alone.
Her father had never told her.
"Why?"
Adrian understood the question.
"Maybe he was protecting you."
"By secretly funding the man I married?"
"Or testing him."
Elena found another letter.
Shorter.
Julian Vescari requested financing twice before meeting you. I approved the first request through intermediaries. I rejected the second. Six weeks later, he met you.
Elena stopped breathing.
Adrian said nothing.
The implication was poisonous.
Had Julian known who she was all along?
Had their entire marriage begun as a strategy?
"No."
Elena stood.
"He didn't know tonight."
"Maybe he knew about the money but not you."
"Or he's an extraordinary actor."
A sound came from the hallway.
Both turned.
Julian entered.
Elena stared.
"How did you get in?"
"I live here."
"Not for much longer."
His gaze fell to the documents.
"What is that?"
Elena watched him carefully.
"Thirty-one percent."
His face changed.
Not enough.
But enough.
She knew.
"You knew."
"Elena—"
"You knew."
"I knew there was an early investor."
"My father."
"I didn't know Gabriel Hale was Gabriel Marcelli."
"But you knew my family was connected."
Silence.
That was answer enough.
Elena felt the betrayal deepen.
"Did you marry me for money?"
"No."
"Answer carefully."
"I didn't."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Julian stepped closer.
"Because by the time I learned your father might have financed my first deal, we were already married."
"How long?"
"Three years."
Four years of silence.
Elena laughed softly.
"You accused me of lying to you."
"I should have told you."
"Yes."
"But I loved you."
She looked at him.
The past tense hurt more than she expected.
Julian saw it.
Something shifted in his face.
"Elena—"
"Leave."
"We need to discuss the waterfront."
She closed her eyes.
There it was.
Business.
Always business.
"Leave."
"If you refuse approval, hundreds of millions—"
"Get out."
"You're acting emotionally."
Adrian actually laughed.
Elena did not.
She stepped toward Julian.
"Tonight you told me I was too soft to understand power. So let me explain something clearly. I own the land beneath your project. I control nearly a third of your company. And until I decide otherwise, you are standing inside property held by my family trust."
Julian went silent.
"Now," Elena said, "leave."
He did.
But at the doorway he stopped.
"I did love you."
Elena's voice was quiet.
"Then you should have behaved like it."
The door closed.
Adrian looked at her.
"You okay?"
"No."
It was the first honest answer she had given all night.
She sat on the edge of the bed.
Adrian remained standing.
He did not touch her.
Did not offer meaningless reassurance.
That was why she had trusted him once.
Long before Julian.
"Why did you disappear?" Elena asked.
Adrian's expression changed.
"After your father's funeral."
"You never called."
"You were engaged."
"That wasn't an answer."
He looked away.
"Your father asked me to."
Elena stared.
"What?"
"He knew how I felt about you."
Her heart stumbled.
"He told me that if I cared about you, I would let you choose a life outside this world."
"And you listened?"
"I was twenty-nine and terrified of Gabriel Marcelli."
Despite everything, Elena almost smiled.
Then the old phone rang.
Not vibrated.
Rang.
Both of them froze.
Unknown number.
Elena answered.
"Hello?"
Static.
Then Samuel Rourke's voice.
"Elena, listen carefully. Your father's trust wasn't created to make you wealthy."
"Samuel, where are you?"
"It was created because he discovered someone was buying Grayhaven through hidden debt."
"Who?"
A noise sounded on Samuel's end.
A door.
His breathing changed.
"Samuel?"
"They know I'm alive."
"Who knows?"
Samuel whispered:
"Ask Julian what happened on October seventeenth."
The call ended.
Elena looked at Adrian.
"What happened October seventeenth?"
Adrian's face had gone pale.
"Elena..."
May you like
"What?"
"That was the night your father died."
