Chapter 6 - The Last Thing Richard Wanted

The FBI moved Emma and me to a secure location that night.
Daniel wanted to come.
I said no.
Not because I thought he was involved.
Because protecting Emma required clear boundaries, and Daniel had not earned the right to decide them.
He accepted that.
That mattered too.
Agents raided the private airfield.
Richard was gone.
His charter plane had never departed.
He had used the booking as bait.
Inside a hangar, investigators found phones, passports, cash, and photographs.
Hundreds of photographs.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
Me.
Emma.
Rebecca.
Richard had been watching all of us for years.
But one discovery changed the case.
A recent photograph showed Rebecca entering a medical clinic in Connecticut.
Taken eleven days earlier.
She was alive.
The FBI located her the next afternoon.
She had been living under federal protection after eventually providing evidence against members of Daniel's father's smuggling network.
Her original protection had ended years earlier, but she kept the new identity.
She had avoided Daniel because she feared Richard would find him through her.
Instead, Richard had found Daniel anyway.
Rebecca agreed to meet.
When she walked into the federal office conference room, Daniel stopped breathing.
She was fifty now.
Older than the woman in his memories.
Older than the video.
But unmistakably Rebecca.
He stood.
She did not hug him.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Then she said:
"I'm sorry."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"You deserved the truth."
"So did you."
She looked at me.
"You must be Claire."
I nodded.
"I've watched what you've done."
"How?"
"Richard wasn't the only person monitoring Daniel."
That could have sounded sinister.
Instead, it sounded sad.
Rebecca sat.
"I knew Vanessa went into his company."
"You allowed it?" I asked.
"I tried to stop her."
"Not very successfully."
"No."
She accepted the criticism.
"Vanessa believed Daniel helped our father cover up what happened to me."
"Your father?"
Rebecca frowned.
"Our father was never involved."
Vanessa, seated with her attorney nearby, looked confused.
"Richard told me Dad helped you disappear."
Rebecca turned toward her sister.
"Richard helped me leave the first night. Then he changed."
"Changed how?"
"He found the money."
We all went silent.
Daniel's father had hidden millions from smuggling operations.
Richard discovered accounts connected to the network.
At first, he claimed he wanted evidence.
Then he realized the money could become his.
Rebecca confronted him.
Richard threatened her.
She disappeared a second time, this time into federal protection.
Vanessa never knew.
"Richard turned revenge into business," Rebecca said.
"He convinced himself Daniel owed us everything. Then every time he stole something, he needed a new reason to justify it."
Michael asked, "Why collapse Hayes Meridian now?"
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
"Because Daniel was about to discover the original accounts."
Daniel frowned.
"I didn't even know they existed."
"You hired an external auditor six months ago."
"For the European losses."
"The audit was getting too close."
So Richard accelerated the plan.
Crash Hayes Meridian.
Profit from the short position.
Frame Vanessa and Daniel.
Disappear with the money.
It was elegant.
Cruel.
And almost successful.
The remaining problem was finding him.
The FBI believed Richard was still nearby.
Then Emma provided the clue.
Children did that sometimes.
They noticed what adults dismissed.
We were eating dinner in the secure apartment when she pointed at Rebecca's photograph.
"That's Grandma Park."
I froze.
"What?"
Emma pointed again.
"Grandma Park."
Rebecca looked confused.
I knelt beside Emma.
"Sweetheart, when did you see her?"
"At the park."
"Which park?"
"The duck park."
My heart pounded.
"Who was with her?"
Emma thought.
"A man."
"Do you remember him?"
She nodded.
"He gave me the red balloon."
The nanny remembered.
Two months earlier, a man had offered balloons to children near Central Park.
She had thought nothing of it.
Emma continued.
"He had a funny finger."
"What kind?"
She bent one finger sideways.
Rebecca went pale.
"Richard broke his little finger when he was fourteen. It healed crooked."
Richard had approached my daughter.
Months before any of us knew.
Why?
Rebecca answered.
"Because he needed to know whether Daniel cared about her."
I stared.
"For what?"
"Leverage."
My blood turned cold.
Daniel stood.
"I'll kill him."
An FBI agent immediately said, "No, you won't."
Daniel paced.
Rebecca looked at him.
"That's what he wants."
Daniel stopped.
"He wants you angry. Reckless. Easy to blame."
That had always been Richard's strongest weapon.
Daniel's worst impulses.
Richard did not create them.
He simply knew how to use them.
The next morning, Bennett Vale completed the rescue financing.
Hayes Meridian avoided default.
The market reacted immediately.
Shares rose nineteen percent.
Richard's short positions began losing value.
Millions every hour.
We had taken away the financial ending he wanted.
Now we waited for the emotional one.
At 2:17 p.m., I received an email.
FROM: RICHARD HALE.
SUBJECT: YOUR DAUGHTER'S FUTURE.
Inside was one sentence.
YOU SAVED HIS COMPANY. NOW COME LEARN WHAT HE DID TO YOURS.
Attached was an address.
An abandoned freight terminal owned years earlier by Daniel's father.
The FBI wanted to control the meeting.
I agreed.
No heroics.
No secret trip.
No reckless revenge.
I wore a wire.
Agents surrounded the location.
Daniel insisted on coming to the command post but stayed outside.
At 6:00 p.m., I walked into the terminal.
Richard waited beside an old shipping container.
He looked ordinary.
That was unsettling.
Mid-forties.
Gray at his temples.
Crooked little finger.
"Claire."
"Richard."
He smiled.
"You're smarter than Daniel."
"Most people are when he gets emotional."
He laughed.
"You really don't love him anymore."
"No."
That disappointed him.
He wanted jealousy.
Pain.
A broken wife.
Instead, he found an investor.
"Why bring me here?"
"Because you deserve to know what he took from you."
"You forged the documents."
"Vanessa did."
"On your instructions."
"Details."
"You stole Emma's shares."
"Temporarily."
"You photographed my child."
His smile disappeared.
"I never hurt her."
"You approached her."
"To understand Daniel."
"She's not a research project."
Richard's face hardened.
"Daniel gets everything. That's the pattern."
"Your sister is alive."
He froze.
Tiny reaction.
Enough.
"Rebecca talked to us."
For the first time, fear entered his eyes.
"She's lying."
"About the smuggling money?"
Silence.
"About Northstar?"
Silence.
"About you?"
His jaw tightened.
I stepped closer.
"You spent years telling everyone Daniel destroyed your family because it made stealing feel righteous."
"He did destroy it."
"No."
My voice stayed calm.
"Your father's fear destroyed part of it. Daniel's father's crimes destroyed part of it. Daniel's betrayal destroyed my marriage. Vanessa's choices hurt me. But you—"
I looked around the rotting terminal.
"You built your entire life around making everyone else responsible for what you became."
His hand moved toward his coat.
Agents rushed in.
"FBI! HANDS!"
Richard turned.
For one second, I thought he had a weapon.
He didn't.
A phone.
He threw it onto the ground.
The screen cracked.
Agents restrained him.
He laughed while they cuffed him.
"You think this ends it?"
I said nothing.
"Claire."
He twisted toward me.
"You still don't know why Daniel married you."
Daniel, watching from the entrance against instructions, went rigid.
Richard smiled.
"Ask him about Margaret Vale."
My stomach dropped.
Margaret.
My mentor.
The woman who rescued me after the hospital.
Richard kept laughing as agents dragged him away.
Daniel looked at me.
"I don't know what he's talking about."
Then my phone rang.
Margaret.
I answered.
May you like
Her first words were:
"Claire, before Daniel says anything, there's something I should have told you three years ago."
