Chapter 5 - The Sister Who Came Back

Daniel moved in front of me.

"Rebecca?"

Silence.

Michael switched on his phone flashlight.

A woman stood near the stairwell.

Not Rebecca.

Vanessa.

She held no weapon.

No bag.

Nothing except a small flash drive.

"Stay away from us," Daniel said.

Vanessa laughed softly.

"After everything, that's what you say?"

"You tried to take Emma from school."

Her expression changed.

"I did not."

"Someone claiming to be family did."

"That wasn't me."

"Then who?"

Vanessa looked toward the metal box.

"Richard."

Michael stepped forward.

"Your brother."

"My brother has been dead for eighteen months."

"No," I said. "He hasn't."

She stared at me.

I showed her the photograph.

Her face drained.

"Where did you get that?"

"Someone sent it."

She looked genuinely frightened.

"You need to leave."

"Why?"

"Because if Richard knows you found Rebecca's ledger, this building isn't safe."

Daniel said, "Rebecca is alive."

Vanessa's eyes closed.

"You knew."

She looked at him.

"I knew she survived the river."

Daniel's voice broke.

"All these years?"

"I was seventeen."

"And later?"

Vanessa's jaw trembled.

"Later, I believed you were the reason she disappeared."

"So you infiltrated my company."

"Yes."

The honesty stunned him.

"You slept with me."

Her eyes filled, but she refused to cry.

"That wasn't part of the plan."

I almost laughed at the absurdity.

Apparently even revenge had workplace complications.

Vanessa turned to me.

"What I did to you was wrong."

"That's a remarkably small sentence for three years of damage."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"I forged your equity transfer."

Daniel swore.

She continued before either of us could interrupt.

"Richard told me the company belonged to stolen money. He said anything we took was restitution."

"And Emma's trust?"

Her face changed.

"I created the trust to protect those shares."

"You transferred them to Northstar."

"No."

Michael frowned.

"We have the transaction."

"I authorized a transfer to a custodial account. Richard changed the destination."

I studied her.

"Why should I believe you?"

"You shouldn't."

She handed me the flash drive.

"Believe what's on there."

Michael took it.

Vanessa continued.

"Richard staged his death when I told him I wanted out."

"Why did you want out?"

She looked at Daniel.

"Because I learned Rebecca never blamed him."

Daniel went still.

Vanessa swallowed.

"My sister disappeared because your father threatened to kill you if she went to federal agents."

The room seemed to shrink.

"She left to protect me?" Daniel asked.

"Partly."

Vanessa's voice hardened.

"But she also left because she discovered your father had already ordered someone to silence her."

"What happened?"

"Rebecca escaped. Richard helped her."

"Then why hate me?"

"Because Richard spent years telling me you knew everything."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Vanessa looked toward me.

"By the time I learned the truth, I'd already destroyed your marriage."

"No," I said.

She blinked.

"You helped destroy it. Daniel did the rest himself."

He flinched.

I wanted that distinction clear.

Vanessa manipulated.

Daniel chose.

Both truths could exist.

We left the basement through a service corridor and returned to Bennett Vale.

The flash drive contained copies of thousands of files.

Emails between Richard and Vanessa.

Offshore transactions.

Instructions.

Fake credential logs.

Evidence that Richard had manipulated the European acquisition by bribing executives at the target company.

Most importantly, messages showing Vanessa's gradual resistance.

Two years earlier:

VANESSA: Claire and the child had nothing to do with this.

RICHARD: Neither did Rebecca.

VANESSA: Emma is a baby.

RICHARD: Daniel's blood.

Later:

VANESSA: I'm returning the trust shares.

RICHARD: Do that and I tell Daniel who you are.

Then, eighteen months ago:

VANESSA: I'm done.

RICHARD: No. You're useful.

That was shortly before his staged death.

Daniel read everything silently.

Finally he asked, "Why didn't you come to me?"

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Would you have believed me?"

He had no answer.

Then she looked at me.

"I did send the birthday photos."

My chest tightened.

"What?"

"I put them in Daniel's private files."

Daniel turned.

"They weren't there."

"Richard had access."

She looked sick.

"I thought you ignored them."

Daniel sat down.

His eyes filled for the first time since I had known him.

Not because his company was collapsing.

Not because he had lost money.

Because for three years, he had believed almost nothing about Emma, and Emma had believed nothing about him.

He looked at me.

"I can't get those years back."

"No."

"I'm sorry."

I did not say it was okay.

It wasn't.

But something inside me loosened slightly.

Not forgiveness.

Maybe simply the end of needing him to understand how badly he hurt me.

He finally did.

The FBI became involved that afternoon.

Once the evidence showed interstate fraud, identity theft, securities manipulation, and offshore laundering, events moved quickly.

Bennett Vale agreed to cooperate.

Hayes Meridian's board suspended Vanessa pending investigation, though prosecutors treated her as a cooperating witness because of the evidence she provided.

Daniel voluntarily stepped aside as CEO during the review.

That shocked the board.

It shocked me too.

"Why?" I asked him afterward.

"Because every time I thought admitting weakness would destroy me, I lied instead."

He looked toward the conference room.

"I think I've done enough of that."

The nine-hundred-million-dollar investment remained unresolved.

Hayes Meridian still had ten days before default.

Richard's fraud explained part of the collapse.

It did not fix the balance sheet.

Michael thought we could restructure.

"Only if lenders take a haircut."

"They might."

"Only if Daniel resigns permanently."

He nodded.

"Probably."

I stared at the model.

Saving Hayes Meridian could produce enormous returns.

It could also save eighteen thousand jobs.

This was no longer about Daniel.

That mattered.

On Friday evening, I presented terms to the board.

Bennett Vale would invest $600 million initially.

A consortium would provide another $300 million.

Debt holders would extend maturities.

Management would be replaced.

The company would sell non-core assets.

And eleven percent of the reorganized equity would be transferred to me to remedy the forged historical ownership interest.

Additionally, Emma's stolen trust shares would be restored.

Daniel read the conditions.

Then signed.

No negotiation.

"You aren't going to argue?"

"No."

"You always argued."

"I was usually afraid."

"Of losing control?"

He looked at me.

"Of anyone discovering I didn't deserve it."

For the first time, I understood something about him.

Not enough to love him again.

But enough to see him as human rather than merely the man who hurt me.

That evening, Emma ran into my office.

"Mommy!"

I caught her.

Behind her stood Daniel.

He had asked permission to visit.

Only twenty minutes.

Supervised.

Emma looked at him with curiosity.

"This is Daniel," I said.

He crouched.

"Hi, Emma."

She studied him.

"You're the sad man."

Michael nearly choked on his coffee.

Daniel smiled painfully.

"Yeah. I guess I am."

Emma reached into her pocket.

She handed him a cookie.

"For your problem."

Daniel stared at it.

Then at me.

His eyes shone.

"Thank you."

Emma nodded seriously.

"Cookies help."

It was the smallest possible beginning.

Maybe that was why it mattered.

At 6:43 p.m., the FBI called.

They had located Richard.

A private airfield outside New Jersey.

Agents were moving in.

Then another call came.

Emma's nanny.

I answered immediately.

"Claire, is Emma with you?"

"Yes."

"Oh, thank God."

"What happened?"

"Someone broke into the apartment."

My blood went cold.

"What did they take?"

"I don't know. Nothing looks missing."

Daniel stood.

Michael grabbed his coat.

Then the nanny whispered:

"Claire... they left something in Emma's bedroom."

"What?"

"A photograph."

"Of what?"

"Emma sleeping."

My stomach dropped.

"Taken when?"

The nanny's voice shook.

"Tonight."

Then I looked toward the office windows.

May you like

Across the street, on the rooftop of another building, a small red light blinked once.

Then disappeared.
