The Widow’s Last Sapphire / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - The Night Ethan Lost His Empire

The elevator stopped.

Ethan positioned himself beside the doors.

They opened.

Marcus stepped out with his hands raised.

“Don’t shoot.”

Ethan lowered the weapon slightly.

“Convince me.”

Marcus revealed that he had suspected Julian for months.

He had signed Valerie’s collection order deliberately.

Valerie stared at him.

“You tried to take my house?”

“I needed Ethan to notice your name.”

“You could have called him.”

“Julian monitored everything.”

Marcus had manipulated the system to push Valerie toward selling assets, knowing the sapphire would eventually surface.

Ethan’s anger became cold.

“You used her.”

“Yes.”

Marcus did not defend himself.

“And I’m sorry.”

Valerie looked disgusted.

But Marcus had brought something important.

A recording from Eleanor.

Julian had kidnapped her.

He wanted the sapphire chip exchanged for her life.

Ethan agreed.

Valerie grabbed his arm.

“You give him that ledger and he owns everyone on it.”

“I know.”

“Then what’s your plan?”

“Give him what he wants.”

“That isn’t a plan.”

Ethan looked at her.

“It is if I’ve already copied it.”

The exchange happened at an abandoned shipping terminal.

Julian released Eleanor.

Ethan handed him the chip.

Then federal vehicles flooded the terminal.

Julian laughed.

“You gave this to the government?”

“Yes.”

“You just destroyed the Cain family.”

“No.”

Ethan looked at Valerie standing behind the federal line.

“I destroyed what my father built.”

Julian escaped during the chaos.

But Cain Logistics did not.

Accounts were frozen.

Offices sealed.

Investigators arrived.

By sunrise, Ethan Cain’s empire was collapsing.

He stood outside headquarters watching agents carry boxes through the doors.

Valerie joined him.

“You did the right thing.”

“It may cost thousands of innocent employees their jobs.”

“Then save the innocent part.”

He looked at her.

“How?”

“Build something that doesn’t require people to fear you.”

Ethan almost answered.

His phone vibrated.

One message.

From Julian.

YOU TOOK MY EMPIRE.

NOW I TAKE WHAT YOU LOVE.
