Chapter 10 - Daniel Bennett’s Final Recording
Ethan moved Valerie immediately.
Julian was watching.
Daniel volunteered to help.
There was one location Julian believed Ethan did not know existed: Arthur Cain’s private lake house.
They went there under federal protection.
Inside, Daniel found another recording he had hidden months earlier.
“I made this in case I didn’t survive,” he said.
Valerie looked at him.
Daniel’s expression carried a sadness she understood before he spoke.
“I wasn’t a good husband near the end.”
“Daniel—”
“I lied. I disappeared. I let you grieve.”
“To protect me.”
“And because I was afraid.”
He admitted their marriage had been failing before the investigation.
Not because Valerie had done anything wrong.
Daniel knew a part of her heart had remained trapped in the unanswered wound Ethan left behind.
“I used to hate him for that,” Daniel said.
Ethan remained silent.
“Then I learned why he left.”
Valerie stared at Daniel.
“You knew?”
“Your father told me.”
“My father?”
Daniel nodded.
Valerie’s father had known Arthur Cain threatened Ethan.
He had helped Ethan disappear from Valerie’s life because he believed it would protect her.
Valerie began crying.
Twelve years of anger shifted beneath her feet.
Daniel took her hand.
“I loved you, Val. But I think we both spent years trying to prove we could build a life around something we never healed.”
She hugged him.
Ethan left them alone.
Later Daniel found him outside.
“She still loves you.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“You’re her husband.”
“Legally.”
Daniel looked toward the lake.
“I filed divorce papers before the crash. They were never served.”
Ethan said nothing.
Daniel smiled sadly.
“If we survive this, don’t disappear again.”
A vehicle approached.
Federal security checked it.
Eleanor stepped out.
She carried an envelope Arthur Cain had left behind.
Inside was the original ownership structure of Cain Logistics.
And one shocking clause.
If criminal activity caused Ethan to surrender control, ownership transferred to the beneficiary of Trust 417.
Valerie Bennett.
Valerie stared at her name.
“No.”
Eleanor whispered, “Your grandmother wasn’t just holding that sapphire.”
“She was holding the company.”
A window shattered.
A bullet struck Daniel.
Valerie screamed.
Daniel collapsed.
Ethan turned toward the tree line.
A second shot rang out.
