Chapter 3 - The Caldwell Name

Ethan did not go alone.

He simply made Richard believe he had.

The location arrived twenty minutes later.

An abandoned Caldwell textile mill forty miles outside the city.

Ethan drove his own car.

Marcus and a police tactical team followed without headlights far behind.

Vanessa remained under guard.

At 1:26 a.m., Ethan entered the mill.

“Nora?”

His voice echoed.

A light switched on.

Nora sat beneath it.

Her hands were tied.

Her face was pale.

Richard Caldwell stood behind her.

Sixty-one years old.

Silver-haired.

Immaculate suit.

Gold signet ring.

Ethan had spent half his childhood believing Richard was the closest thing he had to a second father.

“Uncle.”

Richard smiled.

“Congratulations on finally figuring it out.”

“Let her go.”

“You always were sentimental about employees.”

“She has nothing you need.”

“She has the card.”

“No.”

Richard's smile faded.

Ethan held it up.

“I do.”

Nora stared at him.

Richard stepped away from her.

“Give it to me.”

“First she walks out.”

“That's not how negotiations work.”

“It is tonight.”

Richard laughed.

“You sound like your father.”

Ethan's expression hardened.

“My father trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“And you stole from him?”

Richard's eyes changed.

There it was.

Old resentment.

“I built Caldwell Holdings with him.”

“You worked for him.”

“I saved him.”

“You embezzled from him.”

Richard smiled again.

“Peter found the old records?”

“No.”

Ethan was bluffing.

Richard didn't know.

“Interesting.”

Richard paced.

“Your father was brilliant at taking credit. Investors loved him. Newspapers loved him. Your grandfather loved him.”

“And you hated him.”

“I hated being invisible.”

“So you decided to steal my company through my marriage?”

Richard shook his head.

“Not steal. Correct.”

Ethan glanced at Nora.

She was watching him carefully.

He needed time.

“Why Vanessa?”

“Beautiful. Intelligent. Financially desperate.”

“You bought her.”

“I gave her options.”

“You threatened her family.”

“I motivated her.”

“And after we married?”

“Schedule Twelve.”

Ethan nodded.

“Vanessa receives temporary voting authority if I'm incapacitated.”

“Exactly.”

“And how was I going to become incapacitated?”

Richard smiled.

Nora's breathing quickened.

Ethan felt the answer before hearing it.

“An accident.”

“What kind?”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

Richard sighed.

“A helicopter malfunction was easiest.”

Ethan stared at him.

His wedding honeymoon itinerary included a helicopter flight to a private island.

Vanessa had planned it.

“You were going to kill me.”

Richard's face remained calm.

“I was going to restore what should have belonged to me.”

Nora suddenly said, “He recorded that.”

Richard looked at her.

So did Ethan.

Nora nodded toward Ethan's jacket.

Richard moved instantly.

“Search him.”

Two men stepped from the shadows.

Ethan had known there would be others.

He backed away.

One grabbed him.

Ethan drove an elbow into his ribs.

The second struck Ethan across the jaw.

Nora screamed.

Then glass shattered.

Police flooded the mill.

“Hands!”

Richard grabbed Nora.

A pistol appeared against her neck.

Everyone froze.

Richard backed toward a side door.

“You always ruin everything, Ethan.”

“Let her go.”

“You want her?”

Richard pulled Nora backward.

“Come take her.”

Ethan stepped forward.

Marcus shouted, “Ethan, stop.”

Richard's gun shifted.

That tiny movement was enough.

Nora dropped her weight.

Richard lost his grip.

Ethan lunged.

Police tackled Richard.

The gun skidded away.

Marcus cut Nora free.

Ethan knelt beside her.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

Then shook her head.

Then started crying.

Ethan helped her stand.

Richard was handcuffed.

As officers dragged him away, he looked back.

“You think this ends with me?”

Ethan said nothing.

Richard smiled.

“You still don't know who opened the door.”

By 2:15 a.m., Nora was in an ambulance.

Her injuries were minor.

The blood on her apron came from a cut on her arm.

Ethan sat beside her.

“You saved my life,” he said.

Nora shook her head.

“I found a camera.”

“You could have ignored it.”

“It was in your private office.”

“You could have thrown the card away.”

“I almost did.”

“Why didn't you?”

Nora looked down.

“Because my father spent thirty years working for people who thought employees were furniture. He always said if you see something wrong and stay silent because the person doing it is powerful, you're helping them.”

Ethan nodded.

“I owe you.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You don't owe me money.”

“I wasn't talking about money.”

She looked at him.

For the first time that night, Nora smiled faintly.

Then her expression changed.

“What about the wedding?”

“There isn't one.”

“I'm sorry.”

“I'm not.”

And Ethan realized he meant it.

At 3:03 a.m., he returned to the estate.

Vanessa waited in the library.

Her wedding dress hung upstairs.

Guests were asleep in hotels.

Florists were still working.

Caterers would arrive within two hours.

Hundreds of people believed they were waking for a wedding.

Ethan walked into the library.

Vanessa stood.

“Is Nora alive?”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“Thank God.”

“Richard is in custody.”

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“So it's over.”

“No.”

She looked up.

“Tell me everything.”

Vanessa did.

She admitted Peter had recruited her.

She admitted Richard had paid her father's debts.

She admitted she had copied confidential documents.

She admitted she had helped install surveillance.

She admitted she knew there was a plan to make Ethan “temporarily unavailable” after the wedding.

“But I didn't know they meant kill you,” she said.

“When did you realize?”

“Tonight.”

“And you still tried to have Nora taken.”

Vanessa cried.

“I panicked.”

“You made a choice.”

“I know.”

Ethan removed the engagement ring box from his pocket.

He placed it on the table.

Vanessa stared.

“You're ending it.”

“It ended at 11:47.”

She covered her face.

“I loved you.”

“Maybe.”

He stood.

“But you loved what fear told you to protect more.”

Vanessa looked up.

“What happens to me?”

“That depends on the police.”

“You're turning me in?”

“Yes.”

She stared as though she had expected mercy.

Ethan almost found that remarkable.

Then Marcus entered.

“Police are ready.”

Vanessa stood.

Before leaving, she stopped beside Ethan.

“There is one thing Richard doesn't know.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What?”

“I made a copy.”

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

Ethan's attention sharpened.

“Where?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I gave it to someone I trusted.”

“Who?”

She looked toward the entrance.

The front door opened.

Footsteps crossed the marble foyer.

A familiar male voice called Ethan's name.

May you like

Vanessa whispered, “Him.”

And Ethan recognized the voice immediately.
