Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind the Veil

Ethan ran.
Emergency lights flickered on along the corridor.
Marcus was beside him.
“Security office.”
“I know.”
They reached the stairs.
Two guards came from the opposite hall.
“North wing clear.”
“Where's Vanessa?”
“No visual.”
Ethan's anger sharpened.
His estate had one of the most sophisticated private security systems in the state.
Someone knew exactly how to disable it.
Someone with access.
They reached the security room.
The door stood open.
Marcus's deputy lay unconscious beside the desk.
No gun.
No Nora.
Ethan crouched.
“Alive.”
Marcus checked his pulse.
“Yes.”
On the desk sat a folded wedding invitation.
Ethan opened it.
One sentence had been written across Vanessa's name.
BRING THE CARD.
Marcus looked at him.
“This was planned.”
“No.”
Ethan turned toward the disabled monitors.
“This part wasn't.”
He understood now.
Nora discovering the camera had forced them to improvise.
The kidnapping had been damage control.
Ethan's arrival had disrupted it.
Now someone was cleaning up.
“Get the system online.”
Marcus moved to the controls.
Ethan called Nora.
Her phone rang from beneath the desk.
He closed his eyes briefly.
Think.
He had built companies by refusing to panic when everyone else did.
This was different.
There was a human being in danger because she had discovered a crime inside his home.
And the woman he had planned to marry was involved.
Marcus restored one camera.
Then another.
The rear service entrance appeared.
A dark sedan had left three minutes earlier.
“Plate?”
“Obscured.”
“Track it.”
Marcus began calling local law enforcement.
Ethan returned to the study.
He needed information.
The remaining recordings gave it to him.
Vanessa had not acted alone.
Peter Lang had provided legal access.
A financial consultant named Adrian Mercer had designed the transfers.
Several recordings referenced someone called “R.”
Ethan searched every frame.
No face.
No full name.
Only R.
He opened the most recent recording.
Timestamp: 10:58 p.m.
Less than an hour before the attempted kidnapping.
Vanessa entered Ethan's study with Peter.
“She has the card,” Vanessa said.
“Are you certain?”
“I saw her take it.”
“Then get it back.”
“She won't give it to me.”
Peter stared at her.
“Tomorrow you marry one of the richest men in the country. If that card reaches Ethan tonight, there is no tomorrow.”
Vanessa paced.
“I can fire her.”
“Not enough.”
“What are you suggesting?”
Peter lowered his voice.
“Move her somewhere until after the ceremony.”
Vanessa stopped.
“I didn't agree to hurt anyone.”
“Nobody said hurt.”
“She has a mother. A brother.”
“Then she'll cooperate.”
Vanessa looked toward the camera.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then:
“Fine.”
Ethan paused the video.
He had his answer.
Vanessa had known.
Maybe she hadn't planned murder.
Maybe she hadn't wanted Nora injured.
It didn't matter.
She had authorized two masked men to abduct her.
The woman Ethan had intended to marry had looked at another human being and decided she was disposable.
A noise came from behind him.
Ethan turned.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
She had changed.
The rehearsal gown was gone.
She wore jeans, a sweater, and no shoes.
Mascara had streaked beneath her eyes.
“Where is Nora?” Ethan asked.
“I don't know.”
“Don't lie again.”
“I swear.”
“You hired those men.”
“Peter did.”
“You approved it.”
Vanessa started crying.
Ethan felt nothing.
“I was scared.”
“So was Nora.”
“I never wanted this.”
“You pointed toward the SUV.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I thought they'd take her to a hotel. Keep her there until after the ceremony.”
“You thought kidnapping sounded better if the room had a minibar?”
She flinched.
“Ethan—”
“Who is R?”
Her eyes shifted.
That was enough.
“You know.”
“No.”
“Who is R?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Can't?”
Vanessa whispered, “He'll destroy me.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“You should be more worried about Nora.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don't understand.”
“Then make me understand.”
She looked toward the hall.
“Close the door.”
He did.
Vanessa sat.
Her hands shook.
“Six months ago, Peter approached me.”
“Why?”
“He knew about my father's debts.”
Ethan frowned.
Vanessa had told him her father had left her family financially secure.
Another lie.
“How much?”
“Almost nine million.”
Ethan stared.
“He gambled. Borrowed. Hid it.”
“And Peter offered to fix it.”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“At first, information.”
“About me.”
She nodded.
“Schedules. Meetings. Documents.”
“And you agreed.”
“I thought it was corporate intelligence. I thought someone wanted leverage.”
“You installed a camera in my study.”
“Peter arranged it.”
“You adjusted it.”
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Ethan turned away.
Every intimate conversation.
Every private call.
Every confidential document.
Recorded.
Sold.
“You could have asked me for help.”
“I was ashamed.”
“So you betrayed me instead.”
“I know.”
“No. You don't.”
She stood.
“I fell in love with you.”
Ethan looked at her.
The sentence almost made him angry enough to lose control.
“Don't.”
“I did.”
“Don't use that word tonight.”
Vanessa stopped.
He asked again.
“Who is R?”
She stared at the floor.
“Richard.”
Ethan's heartbeat changed.
There were many Richards in his world.
But only one made Vanessa look that frightened.
“Richard who?”
She started to answer.
A gunshot cracked outside.
Both froze.
Marcus shouted from the corridor.
“Ethan!”
He ran out.
Marcus held a phone.
“We found the sedan.”
“Where?”
“Abandoned near the old Caldwell airfield.”
“Nora?”
“No.”
Ethan grabbed his jacket.
Vanessa followed.
“I'm coming.”
“No.”
“I know Peter's places.”
Ethan stopped.
“What places?”
“He used properties your company forgot it owned.”
Ethan stared.
“Show Marcus.”
Vanessa gave them three addresses.
One was an abandoned conference center.
One a storage property.
The third was a private hangar beside the old airfield.
They drove there with police.
The hangar doors were locked.
Marcus forced them open.
Inside stood the sedan.
Nora's apron lay on the floor.
Blood stained one edge.
Ethan's stomach dropped.
“Nora!”
No answer.
Police searched the building.
Empty.
Then Ethan saw a chair.
Rope.
A camera.
And another wedding invitation.
He picked it up.
A number had been written inside.
“What's twelve?” Marcus asked.
Ethan didn't know.
His phone rang.
Peter Lang.
Ethan answered.
“Where is she?”
Peter laughed softly.
“You really should have married Vanessa first.”
“Where is Nora?”
“You're asking the wrong question.”
“Then give me the right one.”
Peter paused.
“Ask why someone spent six months making sure you married Vanessa.”
The call ended.
Ethan stared at the phone.
Marcus said, “Trace failed.”
Ethan looked again at the number 12.
Then he understood.
His wedding contract had twelve schedules attached.
Schedule Twelve concerned succession.
If Ethan died without children, controlling shares passed to the Caldwell Family Trust.
And the trustee was—
His phone vibrated again.
A photograph appeared.
Nora sat tied to a chair.
Beside her stood a man whose face had been deliberately cropped out.
But Ethan recognized the hand resting on her shoulder.
The gold signet ring had belonged to Ethan's grandfather.
Only one living man wore it now.
His uncle.
Richard Caldwell.

And beneath the photograph were four words:
COME ALONE OR SHE DIES.
