Chapter 6 - The Fall Of The Perfect Family

The ballroom door slowly opened.
My father stepped back and whispered:
"No... he wasn't supposed to be here."
When the man entered, I noticed the hospital bracelet still wrapped around his wrist.
But carved into the plastic were two words:
"Tell Emily."
I suddenly realized my father's secret was connected to Daniel's.
Nobody expected him.
Not Daniel.
Not Victoria.
Not even my father.
The man standing at the entrance looked nothing like the person I imagined would walk into my wedding.
He was older.
Tired.
Weak.
He leaned against the doorway like every step required effort.
But his eyes were clear.
Focused.
And when he looked at Daniel, I saw something I had not seen from anyone else that night.
Disgust.
Daniel immediately moved toward him.
"How are you here?"
The man's mouth curved slightly.
"That's your first question?"
Daniel stopped.
The entire room watched.
I looked at my father.
He looked pale.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
"Dad?"
He didn't answer.
I felt my heart sink.
Because my father had always been the person who told me the truth.
Even when it hurt.
Even when it was difficult.
But tonight...
he had been hiding something too.
The man slowly walked closer.
Sarah stared at him.
Then covered her mouth.
"Oh my God."
She recognized him.
That terrified me.
Because Sarah had already been carrying a secret.
And now another person from Daniel's past had appeared.
A person who was supposed to be impossible.
"Who is he?" I asked.
Nobody answered.
The man stopped in the middle of the ballroom.
Then looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
Those words again.
Everyone was sorry.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had something they wanted to explain after the damage was already done.
"I don't understand."
The man looked at Daniel.
"Your husband knows who I am."
I turned toward Daniel.
"Do you?"
Daniel didn't respond.
The man laughed quietly.
"Of course he does."
He lifted his wrist.
The hospital bracelet caught the light.
"Because he watched me disappear."
My breathing stopped.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel finally spoke.
"Emily, you need to leave."
I stared at him.
"Leave?"
His voice became urgent.
"Please."
I shook my head.
"No."
I looked around the ballroom.
"My wedding has already fallen apart."
I held up the microphone.
"So now I want the truth."
The man nodded.
"My name is Thomas."
Sarah looked at him.
"Thomas Reed."
The name seemed to hit Daniel like a weapon.
Michael stepped forward.
"You thought he was dead."
Daniel didn't answer.
I looked at Daniel.
"You thought he was dead?"
Thomas smiled sadly.
"Daniel needed everyone to believe that."
My stomach tightened.
"Why?"
Thomas looked at my father.
Then back at me.
"Because your father found out what happened."
I turned.
"Dad?"
My father's shoulders dropped.
Like he finally understood he couldn't run anymore.
He walked toward me.
"Emily, I wanted to tell you."
"When?"
He looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Because my father was the one person I never expected to hide something from me.
"When everything was over."
I laughed quietly.
"Everything was over?"
I looked around.
"Nothing is over."
My father nodded.
"You're right."
He looked at Daniel.
"Not until tonight."
Daniel's face became angry.
"You promised."
The room froze.
I looked at Daniel.
"You promised who?"
Nobody spoke.
Then my father answered.
"Me."
The silence was unbearable.
Three years.
Everyone kept mentioning three years.
But nobody had told me what happened.
Until now.
My father looked at Thomas.
"Tell her."
Thomas took a deep breath.
"Three years ago, I worked with Daniel's family."
I listened carefully.
"I was their financial director."
He looked at Daniel.
"I discovered they were hiding illegal transactions."
Victoria immediately interrupted.
"Be careful."
Thomas looked at her.
"I already was."
Victoria's face changed.
Thomas continued.
"I collected evidence."
He pointed toward Michael's folder.
"The same evidence Sarah's father found."
My heart sank.
"So Sarah's father wasn't just in an accident."
Nobody answered.
Thomas looked down.
"No."
The word was quiet.
But it destroyed everything.
"He was attacked."
The ballroom erupted.
People whispered.
Some guests stepped away.
Others pulled out their phones.
Daniel looked furious.
"Stop lying."
Thomas looked at him.
"Are you still pretending?"
Daniel didn't respond.
I looked at my husband.
"Did you know?"
His eyes met mine.
And for a second...
I saw the answer.
Before he spoke.
Before he tried to explain.
I saw it.
"Daniel."
My voice broke.
"Did you know Sarah's father was attacked?"
He swallowed.
"I knew there was a problem."
A problem.
Again.
That word.
A problem.
A mistake.
A misunderstanding.
He always found smaller words for bigger sins.
"You knew."
He stepped toward me.
"Emily, I didn't hurt anyone."
I believed him.
For one second.
Because maybe he wasn't the person who caused everything.
Maybe he was just someone who made terrible choices.
But then Thomas spoke.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
"He didn't hurt anyone with his own hands."
He paused.
"But he helped the people who did."
The room went silent.
I felt tears falling.
Not because I was shocked anymore.
Because I finally understood.
Daniel wasn't a monster from the beginning.
That would have been easier.
He was worse.
He was someone who knew right from wrong.
And chose wrong anyway.
I removed my wedding ring.
Slowly.
Daniel saw it.
"No."
His voice cracked.
"Emily, please."
I placed the ring on the table beside me.
The same table where his family had decided my parents didn't belong.
"I don't know who I married."
He looked broken.
"I love you."
I stared at him.
"Maybe you did."
His eyes filled.
"But you loved protecting yourself more."
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
"You are making a huge mistake."
I looked at her.
"No."
I shook my head.
"The mistake was trusting people who thought they could control the truth forever."
Michael looked at Thomas.
"Where is the original evidence?"
Thomas reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small USB drive.
Everyone stared.
Daniel immediately moved.
Too quickly.
Michael noticed.
"Don't."
Daniel stopped.
Because everyone saw it.
The panic.
The fear.
The desperation.
I looked at the USB drive.
"What's on it?"
Thomas looked at me.
"Everything."
My father closed his eyes.
Like he had been waiting years for someone to finally say that word.
Everything.
The evidence.
The truth.
The reason people disappeared.
The reason Daniel left Sarah.
The reason my father tried to keep me away from this family.
I reached for the USB drive.
But before I touched it...
Daniel's phone rang.
Nobody moved.
He looked at the screen.
And the color drained from his face.
I watched him answer.
He didn't say hello.
He just listened.
Then his expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
He slowly looked toward the ballroom entrance.
And whispered:
"You're sure?"
A pause.
Then Daniel said the name of the person on the other end.
A name that made my father collapse into a chair.
May you like
Because the person Daniel was talking to...
was supposed to be dead.
