Chapter 4 - The Man Who Had Been Dead for Twenty Years

Khloe couldn't move.
The crowd flowed around her.
The man near Track 24 remained still.
Twenty years had transformed him.
But not enough.
Not the eyes.
Not the slight crookedness of his smile.
Not the way he tilted his head when looking at her.
A memory struck with painful clarity.
A kitchen.
A little girl sitting on a counter.
A man dusting flour onto her nose.
Little bird.
"Papa?"
The word escaped before Khloe could stop it.
The man closed his eyes.
When he opened them, tears were there.
"Khloe."
She crossed the distance between them.
Vincent grabbed her arm.
"Wait."
Khloe pulled free.
"If that's him—"
"If."
Salvatore heard.
"Still suspicious, Vincent."
Vincent stared at him.
"You're dead."
"So people keep telling me."
Salvatore looked at Khloe.
She stood only a few feet away now.
Neither knew what to do.
Twenty years couldn't be crossed with one embrace.
Khloe's first emotion wasn't joy.
It was anger.
"You were alive."
"Yes."
"My whole life."
"Yes."
"You knew where we were?"
"Most of the time."
Khloe slapped him.
The sound disappeared beneath the station noise.
Salvatore didn't flinch.
"I deserved that."
"Everyone keeps saying that tonight."
Then Khloe hit his chest with both fists.
"Twenty years!"
Salvatore caught her hands.
She tried pulling away.
Then something broke inside her.
She collapsed against him.
Her father wrapped his arms around her.
Khloe cried into the coat of a man she had mourned since preschool.
"I waited for you."
"I know."
"Birthdays."
"I know."
"Graduation."
"I know."
"You weren't there."
His voice broke.
"I know."
Vincent turned away.
Anthony watched the crowd.
Salvatore finally released her.
"We need to move."
Khloe wiped her face.
"No. You don't get to disappear again before answering me."
"I won't."
"Promise."
Salvatore looked at her.
"I promise."
They boarded an empty train car scheduled to leave within minutes but stepped through to the opposite platform before departure.
A deliberate misdirection.
Salvatore led them through a maintenance passage.
Daniel waited there.
Khloe glared at him.
"You knew."
"Only for six minutes."
"Still counts."
Salvatore almost smiled.
"She has Elena's temper."
"No," Vincent said. "That's yours."
For one brief second, they were simply people who had once known each other.
Then reality returned.
"Carlo knows the locker was opened," Salvatore said.
Vincent held up the ledger.
"Good."
"No. Not good."
"Why?"
"Because the ledger isn't enough."
Daniel frowned.
"It's twenty years of transactions."
"It's evidence of old crimes. Carlo has spent decades burying connections."
"Then what do we need?"
Salvatore looked at Vincent.
"A confession."
Vincent laughed without humor.
"You expect Carlo Vescari to confess?"
"I expect him to brag."
Salvatore explained.
For years he had lived under federal protection, though not continuously. An early corruption investigation collapsed after evidence disappeared.
Someone inside law enforcement had been compromised.
Salvatore vanished again.
He began collecting evidence independently.
"Why didn't you take Mom and me?"
Khloe asked.
"Because Carlo was watching Elena."
"For twenty years?"
"At first."
"Then later?"
Salvatore couldn't answer immediately.
That hurt worse.
"Later," he admitted, "I became afraid that returning would put you in danger."
"You were afraid."
"Yes."
"So you let Mom raise me alone."
Salvatore looked down.
"Yes."
Khloe nodded.
She wouldn't forgive that instantly.
Maybe she never entirely would.
But he was alive.
That mattered too.
Vincent interrupted.
"Carlo took Daniel because he thought Daniel had evidence."
"He does now," Salvatore said.
Daniel lifted the flash drive.
"I copied financial records from Carlo's private office."
"Enough?"
"Enough to make him nervous."
Salvatore looked at Khloe.
"And you made him terrified."
"Me?"
"Carlo learned Salvatore Grace's daughter was working in a restaurant Vincent frequented."
Khloe suddenly understood.
"Marco."
Salvatore nodded.
"Your assistant manager works for Carlo."
Khloe remembered Marco staring at her medal.
"He recognized it."
"Probably."
Vincent's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Carlo."
The voice was faint but recognizable.
Vincent listened.
Then looked at Salvatore.
"Apparently he'd like dinner."
Salvatore's expression hardened.
"Where?"
"Khloe's restaurant."
Khloe stared.
"Why there?"
Vincent listened again.
Then hung up.
"He wants the ledger."
"And?"
Vincent looked at Khloe.
"He wants her."
"No," Salvatore said.
"Agreed."
Khloe folded her arms.
"Nobody asked me."
Three men looked at her.
"No," they said together.
Khloe almost laughed.
Instead she said, "Carlo thinks I'm leverage."
"You are," Salvatore replied.
"Then use that."
"Absolutely not."
"Twenty years ago you decided for me."
"Khloe."
"You decided I was safer without a father. Mom decided I was safer without the truth. Vincent decided Daniel deserved to die. Every man in this ridiculous mess keeps deciding what everyone else needs."
She looked directly at Salvatore.
"I'm done."
Salvatore stared at his daughter.
Vincent's mouth twitched.
"Definitely Elena's temper."
Khloe ignored him.
"If Carlo wants the ledger and me, he'll talk."
Daniel understood first.
"Wire her."
Salvatore glared.
"No."
"She serves his table," Daniel continued. "He thinks she's frightened. He'll underestimate her."
Vincent shook his head.
"Carlo doesn't underestimate people twice."
Khloe looked at him.
"He hasn't underestimated me once."
Vincent met her eyes.
Then smiled faintly.
"Fair."
They spent the next two hours planning.
Khloe would return to work.
Vincent would arrive normally.
Carlo would believe Vincent was negotiating.
Salvatore would remain hidden.
Daniel would send the recording directly to federal investigators he trusted.
Anthony would control exits.
The ledger would be copied.
Nobody would carry weapons into the restaurant except Carlo's own people if they ignored the rules.
At six forty-five, Khloe walked back into the dining room.
Marco stared.
"You came back."
"My emergency ended."
His eyes moved to her necklace.
Khloe had removed the medal.
"Where's your necklace?"
"Lost it."
Marco smiled.
"That's unfortunate."
At seven fifteen, Vincent arrived.
At seven thirty, Carlo Vescari walked in.
He was seventy now.
Silver-haired.
Elegant.
Almost grandfatherly.
That frightened Khloe more than Vincent ever had.
Carlo sat at table nine.
The same table Vincent had occupied earlier.
Khloe approached.
"Good evening."
Carlo smiled.
"Khloe Grace."
She pretended surprise.
"Have we met?"
"No."
He opened the menu.
"But I knew your father."
Khloe's hand tightened around her order pad.
"What would you like?"
"Espresso."
"Anything else?"
Carlo looked up.
"Twenty years of silence."
Khloe met his gaze.
"That's not on the menu."
Carlo laughed.
"Salvatore taught you courage."
"My father died when I was four."
"Did he?"
Khloe forced herself not to react.
Vincent entered and sat opposite Carlo.
"Leave her out of this."
Carlo smiled.
"You've become sentimental."
"You've become old."
"One happens naturally. The other gets men killed."
Khloe poured water.
Carlo watched her.
"Do you understand Sicilian?"
Khloe smiled politely.
"Should I?"
Carlo answered in Sicilian.
"Your father screamed when the roof came down."
Khloe felt rage explode inside her.
She showed nothing.
Carlo studied her.
Then smiled.
"Apparently not."
Vincent's eyes met hers.
He knew how difficult that had been.
Khloe walked away.
Her microphone had captured everything.
But not enough.
They needed more.
Minutes passed.
Vincent placed the ledger on the table.
Carlo touched it.
"You kept this?"
"Salvatore did."
Carlo's expression flickered.
"Salvatore is dead."
Vincent leaned forward.
"Are you sure?"
Carlo looked toward Khloe.
Then toward Marco.
Marco gave the smallest nod.
Khloe saw it.
So did Vincent.
Carlo opened the ledger.
"Your father was weak, Vincent."
"My father worked with you."
"Your father understood necessity."
"He tried to have me burned alive."
Carlo smiled.
"Yes."
Khloe almost stopped breathing.
There.
A confession.
Vincent continued.
"And Salvatore?"
"Collateral damage."
"Yet he escaped."
Carlo's smile vanished.
Khloe realized Vincent had pushed too far.
Carlo stood.
"So he is alive."
Vincent didn't answer.
Carlo looked directly at Khloe.
Then shouted one word.
"Marco."
The restaurant lights went out.
Someone screamed.
Khloe heard glass breaking.
Then a hand closed around her arm.
She was pulled backward.
"Move," Marco whispered.
Khloe kicked.
He tightened his grip.
Vincent shouted her name.
A door slammed.
Khloe found herself dragged into the dark kitchen.
Marco pushed her toward the basement stairs.
"You should've stayed invisible."
Khloe reached for the railing.
Then she saw someone waiting at the bottom.
Silver hair.
Familiar eyes.
Her father.
But Salvatore wasn't alone.
May you like
A gun was pressed against his head.
And the man holding it was Daniel Russo.
