Chapter 12 - The Fortune in Elena’s Name

Elena laughed because the alternative was screaming.
“Four hundred million dollars?”
Nina confirmed it.
“In seventeen linked accounts.”
“I don’t have seventeen accounts.”
“You will in three hours.”
Adrian understood first.
“They’re making her look like the payoff recipient.”
Sofia nodded.
“Hale frames Adrian as leader of the Founders, then claims Elena helped steal the ledger and received payment.”
Elena looked at Adrian.
“The waitress seduces the mafia boss, manipulates him, gets rich.”
“Media will love it,” Whitmore said bitterly.
Sofia studied him.
“You’re still alive?”
“Repeatedly.”
“No idea why.”
“Mutual.”
Despite everything, Elena nearly smiled.
Adrian focused on the plan.
“We reverse the transfer.”
Nina shook her head.
“If we interfere too early, Hale knows we found it.”
“Then we let it begin.”
Elena stared.
“You want four hundred million dollars transferred into my name?”
“For approximately thirty seconds.”
“That sentence should not sound normal.”
Nina explained.
If they allowed the transfer to initiate, they could capture origin authentication.
That could tie Hale directly to the transaction.
Then freeze it before completion.
Sofia added one problem.
“The authorization occurs physically inside Bellandi Tower.”
“Who authorizes?” Adrian asked.
“Hale.”
“Then we record him.”
“He’ll be surrounded.”
“So will we.”
At 2:30 a.m., the group moved.
Adrian, Marco, Elena, Sofia, and a small trusted team entered Bellandi Tower through an underground utility corridor.
Nina worked remotely.
Matteo remained with Lucia and Alessio at a secure site, coordinating release of the evidence.
Adrian’s headquarters felt foreign.
Hale’s men occupied security desks.
Employees had been cleared out.
The tower belonged to an impostor.
They reached the executive floor using maintenance stairs.
Sofia knew the patrol schedule.
That disturbed Adrian.
“You’ve been here before.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Many times.”
“Doing what?”
“Watching you.”
Adrian stopped.
Sofia faced him.
“Alessio wanted to know whether you would join the Founders voluntarily.”
“And?”
“I told him no.”
“Why?”
“You never looked happy when people obeyed you.”
Adrian seemed surprised.
Sofia continued.
“Powerful men who enjoy power look different.”
Elena remembered her father’s note.
Trust the man who refuses power.
Maybe Salvatore had understood Adrian long before Elena did.
They reached the executive conference room.
Through the glass wall, Commissioner Hale stood beside Isabella Bellandi.
She was alive.
Hands bound.
Blood near her temple.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Several armed men surrounded them.
Hale held a folder.
On the table rested forged financial documents.
Elena’s name appeared repeatedly.
Sofia whispered, “He starts the transaction in twenty minutes.”
Adrian wanted Isabella rescued immediately.
Elena stopped him.
“If we move before authentication, he walks away from the money trail.”
“That’s my mother.”
“I know.”
His eyes flashed.
“You don’t know.”
Elena stepped closer.
“You’re right. I don’t. But I know what it feels like to lose a parent because somebody powerful erased the evidence.”
That reached him.
He nodded once.
They waited.
At 3:58, Hale opened a secure banking terminal.
Nina monitored remotely.
“Authentication beginning.”
Hale spoke to Isabella.
The microphone Sofia planted picked up his voice.
“Your son will be remembered as a criminal.”
Isabella smiled through blood.
“My son has been called worse.”
“He’ll die in prison.”
“No.”
“You sound confident.”
“I know Adrian.”
Hale entered credentials.
Nina whispered, “Origin captured.”
Elena held her breath.
“Transfer initiating.”
Four hundred million dollars began moving.
Nina counted.
“Five seconds.”
Hale inserted a hardware key.
“Ten.”
The transaction reached Elena’s temporary accounts.
“Fifteen.”
Nina copied the full authorization chain.
“Got it.”
Adrian moved.
Glass shattered.
Marco’s team entered from both doors.
Hale’s men reached for weapons.
Adrian fired into a ceiling sprinkler pipe, creating chaos without hitting anyone.
Sofia crossed the room and disarmed one guard.
Marco tackled another.
Elena stayed behind cover.
Hale grabbed Isabella and pressed a gun against her neck.
“Stop!”
Everything froze.
Adrian aimed at him.
“Let her go.”
Hale smiled.
“Drop it.”
Adrian did not.
Hale pressed harder.
Isabella looked at Adrian.
Then at Elena.
Something passed across her face.
Regret.
Decision.
She drove her heel into Hale’s foot and threw her head backward into his nose.
The gun shifted.
Adrian fired.
Hale’s weapon flew from his hand.
Marco tackled him.
Isabella fell.
Elena ran to her.
“You okay?”
Isabella blinked at her.
“You’re Russo’s girl.”
“Yes.”
She laughed weakly.
“He’d be proud.”
Elena swallowed.
“You knew him well?”
“Well enough to know he hated expensive wine and loved impossible causes.”
Hale shouted from the floor.
“You think this changes anything?”
Federal sirens sounded below.
Not his people this time.
Independent agents alerted by Nina and the released evidence.
Hale’s confidence finally vanished.
Adrian crouched beside him.
“No.”
He looked at Elena.
“She changed everything when she stopped my pen.”
Hale was taken into custody.
The financial transfer was frozen.
Evidence spread beyond anyone’s ability to suppress it.
For the first time, the Founders’ network cracked publicly.
But one person was missing.
Alessio.
Matteo called.
His voice urgent.
“He’s gone.”
Adrian stood.
“What do you mean?”
“He disappeared ten minutes ago.”
“With what?”
“The copy of the ledger.”
Elena felt dread return.
Then Lucia’s voice came over the phone.
“Elena.”
“Mom?”
“You need to hear this.”
“What?”
“Alessio left a message.”
Lucia read it aloud.
I BUILT THE SYSTEM.
I’LL BE THE ONE WHO DECIDES HOW IT ENDS.
Beneath the message was an address.
Salvatore Russo’s burned office in Queens.
May you like
And a time.
Sunrise.
