Chapter 5 - The Man Behind My Father's Disappearance

The man stepped into the light.

And I forgot how to breathe.

For two years, I had imagined this moment.

I imagined finding the person responsible for my father's disappearance.

I imagined anger.

I imagined questions.

I imagined finally getting the truth.

But I never imagined seeing the man from my father's last voicemail standing in front of me.

Older.

Different.

But impossible to forget.

Because some voices stayed with you forever.

Even after everything else disappeared.

"Elena."

My name came from his mouth.

Not like a stranger saying it.

Like someone who had known it for years.

Adrian immediately raised his hand.

His security team moved.

Weapons pointed.

The man didn't react.

He simply looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

"I see you finally found her."

The words made my stomach twist.

Found me.

Not met me.

Found me.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled slightly.

"You already know."

Nobody moved.

The entire restaurant felt frozen.

Then Adrian spoke.

"Luca Moretti."

The man's expression changed.

Just a little.

But enough.

A confirmation.

The name that had haunted Adrian's family for twenty years.

The man everyone believed was dead.

The man responsible for the betrayal.

The man my father had tried to expose.

He was standing right in front of us.

Alive.

"I thought you were dead," Adrian said.

Luca looked at him calmly.

"That's what I needed everyone to believe."

My heart was pounding.

I looked at Adrian.

Then back at Luca.

"Why are you here?"

My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.

Luca looked at me.

And something strange happened.

There was no hatred in his eyes.

No anger.

Only sadness.

"I came because your father asked me to."

The room went silent.

My entire body froze.

"My father?"

Luca nodded.

"He knew this day would come."

I took a step forward.

"You knew my father?"

"I knew him better than anyone."

The words made Adrian's expression darken.

"You betrayed him."

Luca looked at Adrian.

"No."

A pause.

"Someone made sure you believed I did."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

Luca looked around the room.

"I expect you to look at the evidence."

He reached inside his coat.

Every guard moved instantly.

But Luca slowly pulled out a small object.

A flash drive.

Nothing more.

He placed it on the table.

"Your father spent the last months of his life collecting proof."

My eyes locked on the device.

"Proof of what?"

Luca looked at me.

"That the person who destroyed both our families was never me."

Adrian stared at the flash drive.

"Why should I trust anything you give us?"

"You shouldn't."

Luca's answer surprised everyone.

"Trust is what got us here."

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because they were true.

Someone had used trust as a weapon.

My father trusted someone.

Adrian's father trusted someone.

And both families paid the price.

Adrian picked up the flash drive.

But before he could insert it, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"Who is it?"

He didn't answer.

He answered the call.

"Speak."

Nobody heard the voice on the other side.

But we heard Adrian's reaction.

"What?"

A pause.

"Where?"

Another pause.

Then his face became completely unreadable.

He ended the call.

"What happened?"

Adrian looked at me.

"The person who sent the fake contract was found."

My heart jumped.

"Who?"

Adrian looked at Luca.

"Luca wasn't working alone."

The room went quiet.

I felt something cold move through me.

"Who was helping him?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at the security guard.

"Bring him in."

Ten minutes later, a man was dragged into the restaurant.

I recognized him immediately.

Marco Bellini.

The businessman who had tried to stop Adrian from canceling the transfer.

But something was different now.

The confidence was gone.

His expensive suit was torn.

His face was pale.

Adrian walked toward him.

"You tried to steal from me."

Marco laughed weakly.

"You still don't understand."

Adrian stopped.

"Understand what?"

Marco looked at me.

And smiled.

Not with confidence.

With pity.

"Ask her."

My body went cold.

Adrian looked at him.

"Ask who?"

Marco's eyes stayed on me.

"Ask Elena why her father really disappeared."

The room became silent.

I felt every person looking at me.

"What does that mean?"

Marco smiled.

"You think your father was protecting Adrian's family?"

I didn't answer.

"You think he was some hero?"

My hands tightened.

"Stop."

Marco ignored me.

"Your father wasn't killed because he discovered a betrayal."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Choose your next words carefully."

Marco looked at him.

"He was killed because he discovered the truth about Elena."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Nobody moved.

Marco continued.

"Your father found out who you really were."

I shook my head.

"No."

The word came out automatically.

Because there was nothing else I could say.

My whole life was built around one truth.

I was Elena Russo.

My father's daughter.

That was all.

Marco smiled.

"You never wondered why there were no records of your birth before a certain year?"

I felt dizzy.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Of course you don't."

Adrian looked at Marco.

"Enough."

But Marco kept going.

"Your father wasn't protecting you from us."

He looked directly at me.

"He was protecting us from you."

The words hit like a weapon.

I felt Adrian move beside me.

Not away.

Closer.

Like he knew I was about to break.

"He's lying," Adrian said.

But there was uncertainty in his voice.

And that scared me.

Because Adrian Valenti didn't sound uncertain.

Not ever.

Marco laughed.

"Check the records."

Nobody spoke.

"Check the hospital."

Silence.

"Check the name your father gave you."

I looked at Adrian.

Then Luca.

Luca looked away.

And that was the worst part.

Because he knew something.

"You knew."

My voice was barely a whisper.

Luca closed his eyes.

"Elena..."

"You knew."

A painful silence.

Then Luca said:

"Your father made me promise never to tell you."

My world cracked.

"Tell me what?"

Nobody answered.

I stepped back.

"Tell me what?"

Adrian looked at Luca.

"Who is she?"

Luca didn't respond.

The silence was the answer.

Adrian's face changed.

Not anger.

Shock.

Like he was seeing a completely different story unfold.

Then my phone vibrated.

Everyone looked.

Another message.

Unknown number.

I didn't want to check.

But I did.

One sentence.

Only one.

My hands started shaking.

Because this time, the message wasn't about my father.

It wasn't about Adrian.

It was about me.

"Ask Adrian why he was the one who saved you in 2006."

I slowly lifted my eyes.

Adrian saw the message.

May you like

And for the first time...

he looked at me like he was afraid I would remember something I was never supposed to know.
