Chapter 2 - The Name Hidden Behind the Betrayal

The message disappeared before I could touch it.
Unknown Number.
No profile picture.
No trace.
Only five words that made my blood turn cold.
"Adrian knows who you are."
I stared at my phone.
For a moment, I forgot the restaurant.
I forgot the men watching me.
I forgot the security guards standing near Adrian.
All I could see were those five words.
Because there was only one reason someone would send me that message.
They wanted me afraid.
And it was working.
"Elena."
Adrian's voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
He was still sitting at the table.
Still calm.
Still impossible to read.
But something had changed.
He wasn't looking at me like a waitress anymore.
He was looking at me like a mystery.
"Show me your phone."
My fingers tightened around it.
The room became silent again.
Everyone was waiting.
I knew I couldn't refuse.
Not with the kind of man Adrian Valenti was.
Slowly, I placed the phone on the table.
He picked it up.
His eyes moved across the screen.
The message was gone.
Deleted.
His expression didn't change.
But I noticed his jaw tighten.
"You received something."
It wasn't a question.
I said nothing.
Adrian looked at his security team.
"Check the cameras."
Two men immediately moved toward the restaurant entrance.
The businessmen across the table started whispering.
One of them, a man named Marco Bellini, adjusted his expensive watch and smiled.
A fake smile.
The kind people wore when they wanted to hide panic.
"This is becoming ridiculous," Marco said. "A waitress interrupts a private meeting, makes accusations, and now we are investigating mysterious messages?"
Adrian didn't even look at him.
"Leave."
The smile disappeared from Marco's face.
"What?"
"You heard me."
"This deal involves my company."
Adrian slowly turned his head.
"And your company almost transferred my money to an account that doesn't exist."
The room froze.
Marco's face changed.
Only slightly.
But it was enough.
I saw it.
Adrian saw it.
The truth always appeared in small moments.
A person's eyes.
A sudden breath.
A hand moving too quickly.
Marco stood.
"You are making a mistake."
Adrian looked at him.
"No."
His voice was cold.
"You already made yours."
The security team escorted Marco and the others away.
I watched them disappear through the restaurant doors.
Only then did I realize something.
I was alone with Adrian Valenti.
A man whose name was whispered in places where people didn't want to be heard.
And I had just accused someone at his table of trying to steal from him.
My life had officially become a disaster.
"Sit."
I looked at him.
"Excuse me?"
"Sit down, Elena."
I hesitated.
The waitress in me wanted to obey.
The part of me that survived wanted to run.
But running was impossible.
So I sat across from him.
The same table where a $150 million betrayal had almost happened.
Adrian placed the contract between us.
"Tell me how you knew."
I looked at the papers.
"I didn't know."
His eyes sharpened.
"Don't lie."
"I'm not."
I pointed at the document.
"I recognized the pattern."
"What pattern?"
I took a breath.
"The people who created this weren't trying to make a fake contract."
Adrian waited.
"They were trying to make a real contract with one false detail."
His expression changed.
A little.
But enough.
"Why?"
"Because a completely fake document gets discovered immediately."
I tapped the page.
"But one wrong detail hidden inside a legitimate agreement can move millions before anyone notices."
Adrian leaned back.
"You understand financial fraud."
I looked away.
"I understand people who hide things."
For the first time, he studied me differently.
Not suspicious.
Curious.
"Who taught you?"
I didn't answer.
Because that was the question I had been avoiding for two years.
Who taught me?
My father.
A man who spent twenty-five years protecting other people's money.
A man who discovered a crime inside a company he worked for.
A man who tried to expose it.
And a man who disappeared three days later.
Everyone said he ran away.
I never believed them.
Because my father didn't leave his family.
He didn't abandon me.
Someone made him disappear.
And I had spent the last two years trying to find out who.
"I need to go back to work," I said.
Adrian looked surprised.
"You think you can walk away after this?"
I stood.
"I saved your money."
"You also know information about people trying to destroy me."
"I don't know who they are."
"But you know something."
I looked at him.
"And you know something about me."
The silence between us became heavier.
Adrian didn't deny it.
That bothered me more than if he had.
"Why did you freeze when I said your name?"
My heart stopped.
"I didn't."
"You did."
I said nothing.
Because he was right.
When I introduced myself, one of his men reacted.
The older man at the table.
The one who looked away.
Adrian had noticed.
Of course he had.
Men like him survived because they noticed everything.
"Who is your father?"
The question hit harder than I expected.
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because when you said Russo, one of my men recognized the name."
My hands went cold.
"Who?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Instead, he reached for his phone.
A few seconds later, he received a file.
He opened it.
Then turned the screen toward me.
I saw a photograph.
An old photograph.
A younger man standing beside Adrian's father.
My father's face was next to him.
I stopped breathing.
"No."
Adrian watched my reaction carefully.
"You know him."
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
Because I had spent two years searching for answers.
And suddenly, the answers were sitting in front of me.
My father wasn't just connected to the missing money.
He wasn't just connected to the people who betrayed Adrian.
He had worked with Adrian's family.
"What is this?" I whispered.
Adrian's voice became quieter.
"Your father was the only person who warned my father about a betrayal twenty years ago."
I looked at him.
"Then why did everyone say he stole?"
Adrian's expression darkened.
"Because someone needed a person to blame."
The restaurant felt colder.
I looked back at the photograph.
My father's eyes.
The same eyes I remembered from childhood.
The eyes of a man who always told me the truth mattered.
"He knew," I whispered.
Adrian leaned forward.
"Who?"
I swallowed.
"He knew someone was going to betray you."
A long silence followed.
Then Adrian asked the question that changed everything.
"Why did he never tell me?"
I looked down.
Because I knew the answer.
My father didn't tell him because he couldn't.
Not because he chose silence.
Because someone had made sure he couldn't speak.
"I think..."
My voice shook.
"I think someone stopped him."
Before Adrian could respond, one of his guards rushed back into the room.
His face was different.
Not calm.
Not professional.
Afraid.
"Mr. Valenti."
Adrian turned.
"What happened?"
The guard looked at me.
Then at Adrian.
"We checked the security footage."
A pause.
"There was someone inside the restaurant before the meeting started."
Adrian stood.
"Who?"
The guard hesitated.
Then slowly pulled out a photograph.
My stomach dropped before I even saw it.
Because I recognized the person in the picture.
The person standing outside the restaurant door.
The person who had been watching me all night.
The person who knew my secret.
The guard placed the photograph on the table.
May you like
And Adrian whispered one name.
My father's name.
