Chapter 6 - The Voice Behind the Missing Name

The room went silent after Lorenzo spoke.

"Your father wants to speak with you."

Rosie stared at him.

For several seconds, she did not understand the words.

Not because they were complicated.

Because they were impossible.

"My father?"

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Lorenzo did not look away.

"Yes."

Rosie shook her head slowly.

"No."

Nobody moved.

"My father is dead."

The words came out automatically.

A sentence she had repeated her entire life.

A sentence built into her.

Lorenzo looked at her with something close to sympathy.

"Rosie..."

"No."

She stepped back.

"You don't get to do this."

Her voice became louder.

"You don't get to walk into my life, show me pictures of people I never knew, tell me my grandmother hid secrets, and then tell me the one thing I was always certain about was a lie."

Lorenzo accepted every word.

Because he knew she deserved to be angry.

Gabriel looked down.

Elena wiped her eyes quietly.

Mateo remained near the door, watching the hallway.

Rosie noticed.

Everyone was waiting.

Waiting for her to believe.

Waiting for her to break.

She refused to give them either.

"Put him on the phone."

Lorenzo hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Rosie noticed.

"Why are you hesitating?"

"He may not be ready."

Rosie almost laughed.

"Not ready?"

She looked at him.

"I have spent twenty-eight years being ready for a father who never came back."

Her eyes hardened.

"He can talk."

Lorenzo slowly picked up his phone.

He pressed a button.

The room became completely silent.

Then a voice came through the speaker.

A man's voice.

Older.

Tired.

But real.

"Rosie."

The moment she heard her name, everything inside her stopped.

Because no stranger could say it like that.

Not the way someone who had known her before she could remember would say it.

Her hand covered her mouth.

She could not speak.

The voice continued.

"I know you probably hate me."

Rosie's eyes filled.

She wanted to answer.

She wanted to scream.

She wanted to ask a thousand questions.

But nothing came out.

"Your grandmother wanted to tell you the truth."

The voice cracked slightly.

"But she knew the truth would put you in danger."

Rosie finally found her voice.

"Who are you?"

A long silence.

Then:

"I am Adrian Hastings."

The name that had existed only on paper.

The name attached to a mystery.

The name she had spent her entire life wondering about.

Rosie sat down slowly.

Her knees felt weak.

"You're alive."

The voice became quieter.

"Yes."

The room felt smaller.

"Why?"

That was the only question she could ask.

Why.

Why leave?

Why hide?

Why let her grow up believing she had been abandoned?

"I didn't leave you."

Rosie's expression changed.

"Then what did you do?"

The voice on the phone was silent.

Then Adrian answered.

"I disappeared so they wouldn't find you."

Rosie looked at Lorenzo.

"They?"

Adrian continued.

"The people who wanted the ledger."

The same word.

The same secret.

The same thing that had destroyed her family.

"What was in it?"

A pause.

"Everything."

Rosie waited.

Adrian explained slowly.

"The ledger wasn't just about money."

He breathed in.

"It contained names of people who controlled businesses, politicians, police officials, and organizations across the country."

Rosie looked at Lorenzo.

"And you were involved?"

Lorenzo answered before Adrian could.

"Yes."

Rosie turned toward him.

The honesty surprised her.

"I was."

The room went quiet.

"But your father was different."

Lorenzo continued.

"He saw what everyone else ignored."

Adrian's voice came through the phone.

"Lorenzo saved my life."

Rosie looked at him.

The man she had suspected.

The man she believed was hiding the truth.

"You saved him?"

Lorenzo nodded.

"That night, I had one choice."

"What choice?"

"Protect the ledger."

He paused.

"Or protect your father."

Rosie looked confused.

"And you chose him."

"Yes."

"Then why did everyone think he died?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Gabriel spoke.

"Because someone needed him to disappear."

Rosie looked at him.

"Who?"

Gabriel's face became serious.

"The person who betrayed him."

The room became still.

Rosie looked at Lorenzo.

"You said you didn't know who it was."

"I didn't."

Gabriel stepped forward.

"You knew the person was close."

Lorenzo looked at him.

"Enough."

"No."

Gabriel's voice became sharper.

"You protected this secret for twenty years. You protected him."

He pointed at Lorenzo.

"But you never asked yourself why Adrian's location was discovered that night."

Rosie's heartbeat increased.

"What are you saying?"

Gabriel looked at her.

"I'm saying your father trusted the wrong person."

Everyone became silent.

Then Adrian spoke.

"Rosie."

She looked at the phone.

"There is something you need to know."

"What?"

"The person who betrayed me..."

His voice lowered.

"Was someone your grandmother trusted."

Rosie's face changed.

Her grandmother.

The one person she believed was always honest.

"Who?"

The line went silent.

Then Adrian said:

"Look inside the jewelry box."

Rosie frowned.

"What?"

"Your grandmother left the final clue there."

She looked at Lorenzo.

"You said someone broke into my apartment."

Lorenzo nodded.

"Yes."

"Did they take the jewelry box?"

Mateo checked his phone.

Everyone waited.

Then he looked up.

"No."

Rosie felt confused.

"If they broke in..."

She stopped.

Because she understood.

They had not been searching for the jewelry box.

They were searching for something inside it.

Lorenzo stood.

"We need to go."

Rosie looked at him.

"Where?"

"Your apartment."

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

"I am not running somewhere just because everyone tells me to."

Lorenzo's expression softened.

"You don't understand."

"No."

She stood.

"I understand perfectly."

She looked around the room.

"For years, people made decisions for me."

Her eyes became determined.

"My father disappeared."

"My grandmother hid the truth."

"You protected secrets."

She looked directly at Lorenzo.

"Now I decide."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Adrian's voice came through the phone.

"Rosie."

She looked at the phone.

"Take Lorenzo with you."

Her expression changed.

"Why?"

A pause.

"Because if I am right..."

Adrian's voice became serious.

"He is the only person who can keep you alive tonight."

Rosie wanted to argue.

But something stopped her.

Because Adrian sounded afraid.

Not for himself.

For her.

They left the hotel fifteen minutes later.

The streets outside were quiet.

Too quiet.

Rosie sat in the back of Lorenzo's car, holding the envelope from her grandmother.

The city passed outside the window.

Everything familiar looked different now.

Every memory.

Every story.

Every unanswered question.

All of it had another meaning.

When they reached her apartment building, Mateo checked the entrance.

"Clear."

Lorenzo looked at Rosie.

"Stay behind me."

She almost refused.

Then she saw his face.

Not the mafia boss.

Not the powerful businessman.

A man who was genuinely worried.

They entered the building.

The elevator doors opened.

The hallway was dark.

Rosie's apartment door was at the end.

She stopped.

Something felt wrong.

The lock was damaged.

The door was slightly open.

Lorenzo immediately raised his hand.

Nobody moved.

Then Rosie noticed something on the floor.

A small wooden object.

Her grandmother's jewelry box.

Sitting outside the apartment.

Open.

But empty.

Lorenzo slowly approached.

Then he looked inside.

His face changed.

"What?"

Rosie stepped closer.

Inside the empty box was one thing.

A photograph.

Not old.

Not damaged.

A new photograph.

Taken recently.

Rosie picked it up.

Her blood turned cold.

Because the picture showed her standing in the hotel dining room.

With Lorenzo.

With Elena.

With Gabriel.

And behind them...

A person who should not have been there.

Her grandmother.

Alive.

Then her phone received a message.

One sentence.

"I never told you who your grandmother was protecting."

May you like

Rosie looked toward the apartment door.

Because from inside the dark room, someone whispered her name.
