Chapter 5 - The Man Who Was Erased From History

The man standing outside the dining room held the photograph like it was something dangerous.

Rosie stared at him.

She did not recognize his face.

But she recognized the feeling in the room.

Everyone was afraid of what he might say.

The older stranger near the table stepped back.

Elena stopped breathing.

Mateo immediately moved closer to Lorenzo.

And Lorenzo Bianca...

For the first time since Rosie met him, looked completely unprepared.

"Who are you?" Rosie asked.

The man looked at her.

His expression was tired.

Not threatening.

Not angry.

Just tired.

"My name is Gabriel."

The name meant nothing to Rosie.

But Lorenzo reacted.

A small movement.

A slight change in his eyes.

Rosie noticed.

"You know him."

Lorenzo did not answer.

That was becoming the answer she hated most.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except her.

Gabriel walked into the room and placed the photograph on the table.

The same photograph Rosie had been holding minutes earlier.

The photograph with her grandmother.

The young Lorenzo.

And the man whose face had been scratched away.

Rosie looked at it.

Then at Gabriel.

"Why do you have this?"

Gabriel looked at Lorenzo.

"Because he should have told you years ago."

Lorenzo's jaw tightened.

"Don't do this."

"Do what?"

Gabriel laughed softly.

"Tell her the truth?"

The room became silent.

Rosie looked at Lorenzo.

"Tell me."

Lorenzo looked away.

For a moment, Rosie thought he would refuse.

Then he sat down.

And for the first time, he looked less like a powerful businessman.

More like a man carrying something heavy.

"Your father's name was Adrian Hastings."

Rosie waited.

Nothing happened.

The name did not unlock any memory.

Because to her, her father had never been a person.

He was a blank space.

A name on a birth certificate.

A question nobody answered.

"My mother said he died."

Lorenzo nodded.

"That's what everyone was told."

Rosie looked at Gabriel.

"And you know differently?"

Gabriel looked at the photograph.

"I knew Adrian better than anyone."

A strange silence followed.

Rosie felt something shift inside her.

"Who was he?"

Gabriel took a breath.

"Your father was an accountant."

Rosie frowned.

"An accountant?"

"Not just any accountant."

Gabriel pointed at the photograph.

"He worked for people who hid their money behind businesses, companies, and fake identities."

Rosie looked at Lorenzo.

"The mafia."

Nobody denied it.

Her stomach tightened.

"But my father wasn't involved."

"No," Gabriel said.

"He was trying to expose them."

The words stayed in the room.

Rosie looked down at the letter from her grandmother.

The missing name.

The symbol.

The warning.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

"My father found something."

Lorenzo nodded slowly.

"A ledger."

Rosie remembered the word.

The word everyone avoided.

"The ledger."

Lorenzo looked at her.

"Your grandmother told you?"

"No."

Rosie looked at the envelope.

"She warned me about it."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"The ledger contained names."

"Whose names?"

"Everyone who paid to stay protected."

Rosie's eyes widened.

Politicians.

Business owners.

People with money.

People with power.

The kind of people who could erase someone.

"My father tried to release it."

Lorenzo nodded.

"And that is why he disappeared."

Rosie swallowed.

"Who killed him?"

Nobody spoke.

She looked at each person.

Lorenzo.

Gabriel.

Elena.

Mateo.

Finally, Lorenzo answered.

"We don't know."

Rosie immediately knew that was not the complete truth.

"You do know something."

Lorenzo looked at her.

"Your father was supposed to meet me the night he died."

The room became cold.

"You were there?"

"Yes."

Rosie stared.

"And you survived."

Lorenzo accepted the accusation in her eyes.

"Yes."

"What happened?"

Lorenzo looked down.

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

Then he spoke.

"Adrian arrived with the ledger."

Rosie leaned forward.

"He trusted you?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Lorenzo looked at her.

"Because your grandmother trusted me."

The answer hurt more than Rosie expected.

Because suddenly her grandmother was not just connected to a mystery.

She was connected to the most dangerous people in the city.

"What happened after he gave it to you?"

Lorenzo closed his eyes briefly.

"Someone followed him."

"Who?"

"I never saw their face."

Gabriel interrupted.

"That's not true."

Everyone turned.

Gabriel looked at Lorenzo.

"You saw who was there."

Lorenzo's expression hardened.

"Be careful."

"No."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"You have protected the same person for twenty years."

Rosie's heart started beating faster.

"What person?"

Nobody answered.

Again.

That silence.

That terrible silence.

Rosie stood.

"I'm leaving."

Lorenzo looked at her.

"No."

This time, anger entered his voice.

Not control.

Fear.

"No?"

Rosie stared.

"You don't get to tell me that."

"I do when someone is trying to find you."

"I didn't ask for any of this."

"I know."

His voice softened.

"That's why you need protection."

Rosie shook her head.

"No. I need answers."

She picked up her phone.

"I need to know why strangers are following me. Why my grandmother's letters mention people I never met. Why my father disappeared."

She looked at Lorenzo.

"And why you were the last person who saw him alive."

Nobody moved.

Then Elena spoke quietly.

"Rosie."

She turned.

"Your father didn't disappear because he was weak."

Rosie waited.

"He disappeared because he made a choice."

"What choice?"

Elena looked at the photograph.

"He chose to protect you."

Rosie's eyes filled.

"But I wasn't even born."

Elena nodded.

"Exactly."

The answer confused her.

Then Gabriel spoke.

"Adrian knew someone would come after him."

He looked at Rosie.

"He knew the only way to save you was to make everyone believe he was gone."

Rosie felt dizzy.

"That makes no sense."

"It will."

Gabriel reached into his coat.

He removed a small object.

A key.

Old.

Metal.

With the same symbol engraved on it.

Rosie stared.

"My father left this."

Lorenzo stood immediately.

"Where did you get that?"

Gabriel looked at him.

"From the place you never found."

The tension changed instantly.

"What place?" Rosie asked.

Gabriel did not answer.

Instead, he placed the key beside the photograph.

"This opens the last thing your grandmother hid."

Lorenzo's face became serious.

"Nobody knows about that."

Gabriel looked at him.

"Someone does."

Rosie looked between them.

"Who?"

Gabriel reached for his phone.

His hands moved quickly.

Then he showed them the screen.

A security photo.

Taken from outside the Drake Hotel.

The person standing across the street was wearing a dark coat.

Watching the entrance.

Watching them.

Rosie recognized something.

Not the face.

The symbol.

The same symbol.

On the person's hand.

Lorenzo looked at the image.

And whispered:

"No."

Mateo stepped closer.

"Who is it?"

Lorenzo did not answer.

His eyes stayed fixed on the screen.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Lorenzo answered.

At first, he said nothing.

Then his expression changed.

Because the voice on the other end was familiar.

A voice that should not have existed.

He slowly lowered the phone.

May you like

And looked at Rosie.

"Your father wants to speak with you."
