Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Forgotten Name

"Marin, don't believe anything Lucien tells you."

The voice behind me made everyone turn.

I knew that voice.

Not because I had heard it many times.

Because I had spent three years listening to it every day.

My manager.

The man who had disappeared from the kitchen.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

He stood at the entrance of the restaurant.

Alive.

Calm.

Watching me.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Lucien stared at him like he was looking at a ghost.

"You."

My manager smiled slightly.

"Still surprised?"

Lucien's fists tightened.

"You died."

"No."

The man walked slowly into the restaurant.

"I disappeared."

Every step he took made the room feel smaller.

The security men moved aside.

That told me everything.

They were not here to protect Lucien.

They were waiting for him.

I looked at my manager.

The person who had corrected my mistakes.

The person who had asked about my grandmother.

The person who had always seemed ordinary.

But he was not ordinary.

Not even close.

"Who are you?" I asked.

He looked at me.

And his expression softened.

"My real name is Adrian Whitlock."

The name hit me immediately.

Whitlock.

My last name.

My hands went cold.

"No."

The word left my mouth before I could stop it.

"That is impossible."

Adrian looked at me sadly.

"I know."

Lucien stepped forward.

"Marin, listen to me."

I turned toward him.

"You knew him."

Lucien didn't answer.

That was enough.

The silence was an answer.

"You knew my family."

His face changed.

"I knew your father."

"Who was he?"

Lucien looked down.

And that hesitation made me angry.

"Who was my father?"

Before Lucien could answer, Adrian spoke.

"His name was Daniel Whitlock."

My breathing stopped.

I had heard that name before.

Only once.

My grandmother had been half asleep.

She was holding an old photograph.

She whispered it.

Daniel.

Then she immediately changed the subject when she realized I was listening.

I thought it was just a forgotten memory.

Now I knew it was not.

"Why did she hide him from me?"

Adrian looked at Lucien.

"Because she was trying to protect you."

Lucien shook his head.

"No."

Adrian looked at him.

"You still don't understand."

"I understand enough."

Lucien's voice became colder.

"My brother trusted Daniel. He trusted your family. Then both of them disappeared."

Adrian's expression changed.

"Because they discovered the truth."

"What truth?"

Nobody answered.

I looked between them.

"Someone needs to tell me what happened."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"You deserve to know."

He reached into his coat and removed a small folder.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

He placed them on the table.

The first page had my father's name.

Daniel Whitlock.

I picked it up.

The second page had another name.

Lucien's brother.

Thomas Votan.

I looked at Lucien.

His face turned pale.

"Where did you get those?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Instead, he opened the folder.

"Ten years ago, Thomas Votan discovered that someone inside the company was changing medical formulas."

Lucien already knew this part.

But Adrian continued.

"Thomas did not know how far the corruption went."

He placed another document down.

"He believed it was only a business crime."

I looked at the papers.

"What was it really?"

Adrian's voice became quiet.

"It was a cover-up."

The restaurant was silent.

"Your father was not a businessman."

I looked up.

"What?"

"Daniel Whitlock was an investigator."

The words shocked me.

"My father was investigating them?"

Adrian nodded.

"He discovered that people were being harmed because of illegal changes made to medical products."

Lucien closed his eyes.

"My brother found him."

"Yes."

Adrian looked at him.

"They worked together."

I stared at Lucien.

"You knew all this time?"

His expression broke.

"I knew part of it."

"Part?"

"I knew your father helped my brother."

He looked at me.

"But I did not know what happened afterward."

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because everything was becoming impossible.

"My whole life was a lie."

Adrian looked at me.

"No."

His voice was gentle.

"Your whole life was protected by lies."

I looked away.

There was a difference.

But it still hurt.

Suddenly, Lucien's phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then his expression changed.

"What?"

A pause.

Then:

"That is impossible."

He slowly lowered the phone.

"What happened?" I asked.

He looked at Adrian.

"They found the original file."

Adrian froze.

"What file?"

"The one your brother hid."

The room changed instantly.

Adrian's calm expression disappeared.

"Where?"

Lucien looked toward me.

"With someone who has been protecting Marin for years."

My heart started beating faster.

"Who?"

Lucien didn't answer.

Because at that exact moment, the restaurant television screens turned on.

Every screen.

At the same time.

A security camera feed appeared.

A small room.

An old wooden desk.

And sitting in front of the camera...

was my grandmother.

Alive.

I stopped breathing.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The recording began.

My grandmother looked directly into the camera.

Her eyes were tired.

But she was not afraid.

"Marin."

My name from her mouth nearly broke me.

"If you are watching this, it means they finally found you."

I stepped closer.

The entire world disappeared.

She continued.

"I need you to know the truth about your father."

Lucien moved toward the screen.

Adrian whispered:

"No..."

My grandmother looked away from the camera.

Like someone had entered the room.

Then she said the words that made my blood run cold.

"The person who destroyed your family is the same person standing beside you right now."

May you like

The screen suddenly went black.

And behind me, someone whispered my name...
