Chapter 6 - The Man Behind the Translation

Mallory couldn't look away.

Her mother was alive.

Adrian's mother was alive.

Two women officially dead.

Sitting inside the same room.

Rebecca claimed Catherine and Eleanor had stolen the original evidence proving that Victor's financial network had bribed officials and manipulated international acquisitions for decades.

Without that archive, Rebecca couldn't protect herself.

With it, she could destroy dozens of people.

Adrian asked where they were.

Rebecca laughed.

"Ask your waitress."

Mallory stared.

Then she understood.

The French sentence.

Everything had to be finished before you left this room.

It wasn't about Adrian.

It was an instruction.

A location clue.

"This room."

Mallory repeated it in French.

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

"The wording."

She remembered her mother teaching her as a child.

Catherine used language games.

When she wanted Mallory to remember something, she emphasized unusual prepositions.

Inside.

Under.

Before.

Behind.

Mallory examined the French phrase.

The first letters of specific words formed an acronym.

L.S.P.

Daniel recognized it.

Lake Saint Pierre.

A private property outside the city.

Owned by a shell corporation connected to Rebecca.

Adrian mobilized his legitimate security team and contacted federal authorities.

This time, he didn't rely on company channels.

Whitmore agreed to cooperate.

Victor was found downstairs trying to escape through the parking garage.

Julian was arrested with him.

But Rebecca remained at the lake property.

Mallory insisted on going.

Adrian objected.

"She's my mother."

"Exactly."

"Would you stay here if it were Eleanor?"

Adrian couldn't answer.

Daniel went too.

They arrived before dawn.

Authorities surrounded the property.

Adrian stayed beside Mallory.

No billionaire.

No waitress.

Just two children trying to get their mothers back.

Rebecca called.

She wanted the archive.

Mallory didn't have it.

But Catherine had hidden access to it inside the original ownership documents.

Rebecca ordered Mallory to enter alone.

Adrian said no.

Mallory said yes.

She walked inside.

Catherine sat behind a table.

Eleanor beside her.

Rebecca stood near the window.

No visible weapon.

That didn't make her harmless.

"Mallory."

Catherine cried.

Mallory almost ran to her.

Rebecca stopped her.

"Password."

Mallory looked at her mother.

Catherine shook her head subtly.

Rebecca noticed.

"Don't."

Mallory understood.

Rebecca didn't have the archive.

She had never had it.

And Catherine wasn't going to surrender it.

Mallory smiled.

"You lost."

Rebecca's face tightened.

"You think because you served coffee and understood one sentence, you're suddenly important?"

"No."

Mallory stepped closer.

"I was important before you noticed me."

Rebecca's confidence cracked.

Outside, police moved into position.

Rebecca tried one final manipulation.

She claimed Adrian's father had financed Victor.

Eleanor confirmed part of it.

But Adrian's father had later tried to stop him.

That attempt cost him his life.

Adrian had spent years believing his father's death was natural.

Another lie.

Another hidden truth.

Rebecca heard the police outside.

She moved toward the rear exit.

Mallory blocked her.

Rebecca laughed.

"You're a waitress."

Mallory looked at her.

"And you still haven't learned what happens when you underestimate one."

Rebecca shoved her aside.

The door burst open.

Agents entered.

Rebecca was arrested.

Catherine embraced Mallory.

For eleven years, Mallory had imagined what she would say if she somehow saw her mother again.

She said none of it.

She simply cried.

Adrian embraced Eleanor.

Daniel joined Catherine and Mallory.

For several minutes, nobody cared about companies or contracts.

Then Catherine pulled back.

"There is something else."

Mallory laughed through tears.

"Of course there is."

Catherine became serious.

"The archive."

"What about it?"

"It can't remain hidden."

Adrian approached.

Catherine looked at him.

"It contains enough evidence to destroy Vale Industries."

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"Then release it."

Eleanor stared at her son.

"Adrian—"

"If my company was built partly on crimes, people deserve to know."

Mallory watched him.

That was when she finally trusted him.

Not because he was powerful.

Because he was willing to lose power.

Catherine nodded.

"I hoped you'd say that."

They returned to the city.

By morning, federal investigators had the archive.

Victor cooperated in exchange for consideration.

Julian admitted falsifying translations for years.

Whitmore surrendered his license and agreed to testify.

Rebecca faced charges.

Adrian's company stock plunged.

News networks exploded.

Mallory's name appeared everywhere.

WAITRESS EXPOSES BILLION-DOLLAR CONSPIRACY.

She hated the headline.

It made the truth sound simple.

Nothing about it had been simple.

Three days later, Mallory returned to the restaurant.

She stood outside before going in.

Adrian arrived behind her.

"You don't have to work today."

"I know."

"Then why are you here?"

"I left my favorite pen."

He laughed.

It was the first time she'd heard him laugh.

Then the restaurant manager appeared.

His face was pale.

"Mallory?"

"What?"

"There's someone waiting for you."

"Who?"

"He wouldn't say."

Adrian immediately became serious.

Mallory entered.

A man sat alone at the same table where everything had begun.

He wore an ordinary gray jacket.

No security.

No briefcase.

Mallory approached.

The man looked up.

Then placed an old photograph on the table.

It showed Catherine Reed.

Eleanor Vale.

Victor Kane.

And one fourth person.

Adrian stopped behind Mallory.

The fourth person was circled in red.

Mallory looked at the stranger.

"Who is that?"

The man answered quietly.

"The person Rebecca was protecting."

Adrian stared at the photograph.

May you like

Mallory felt the room turn cold again.

Then the stranger said the name.
