Chapter 5 - A Betrayal Worth Billions

Daniel Reed entered the private dining room alone.
Mallory stared at him.
He was forty.
Maybe forty-one.
Older than her.
Dark hair.
Gray beginning at the temples.
He had her mother's eyes.
That frightened Mallory more than any document could.
Daniel placed Catherine's photograph on the table.
"I've been looking for you for twelve years."
Mallory didn't move.
"Why?"
"Because Mom made me promise."
"Mom died eleven years ago."
"No."
Mallory's stomach tightened.
Daniel looked at her.
"The woman who died in that car wasn't Catherine Reed."
Everything stopped.
Mallory demanded proof.
Daniel provided it.
Dental records.
Insurance discrepancies.
A photograph taken seven years after Catherine's supposed death.
And finally, an audio recording.
Catherine's voice.
Mallory listened with tears burning behind her eyes.
Her mother had disappeared because Victor had threatened both children.
Mallory hadn't known Daniel existed because Catherine separated them deliberately.
Daniel had been raised by Catherine's sister in Canada under another surname.
Mallory had remained in America.
Two children.
Two lives.
One hidden inheritance.
Adrian asked the question Mallory couldn't.
"Where is Catherine now?"
Daniel looked at Whitmore.
"He knows."
Whitmore shook his head.
"I don't."
"You moved her."
"I helped her disappear the first time."
"And the second?"
Whitmore went silent.
Adrian stepped closer.
Daniel stopped him.
"Don't."
Adrian looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because Charles isn't the person running this."
Mallory frowned.
"Victor is."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
That changed everything.
Victor was dangerous.
But he wasn't the architect.
Daniel explained that Victor had spent years believing he controlled the network.
In reality, someone else had been manipulating him too.
Someone with access to Vale Industries.
Someone who knew Catherine.
Someone who could alter contracts and arrange tonight's dinner.
Adrian asked for a name.
Daniel looked directly at him.
"Your chief financial officer."
Adrian went still.
"Rebecca Sloan?"
Daniel nodded.
Adrian refused to believe it.
Rebecca had worked beside him for fourteen years.
She had helped build the company.
She knew every account.
Every acquisition.
Every vulnerability.
Mallory understood immediately.
"That's why Victor needed translations."
Daniel nodded.
"Rebecca designed the financial structure. Victor was the public threat. Whitmore handled the legal work. Julian manipulated language. But Rebecca controlled the money."
Adrian called her.
No answer.
He accessed company security.
Rebecca's office was empty.
Her computer had been wiped.
Then Mallory remembered the senior businessman at dinner.
The quiet one.
He had disappeared during the confusion.
Adrian checked.
Gone.
Daniel identified him.
Rebecca's father.
The conspiracy wasn't merely financial.
It was generational.
Catherine and Eleanor had discovered it decades ago.
Mallory's interruption had forced the entire network into the open before they were ready.
Adrian looked at her.
"You saved me."
"Not yet."
She pointed toward the contract.
"We still don't know what happens at one."
12:56.
Four minutes.
Daniel opened Catherine's old photograph.
It was actually two layers.
Inside was a microfilm strip.
A code.
Adrian's team entered it into the corporate archive.
A locked file opened.
CATHERINE PROTOCOL.
The instructions were simple.
At 1:00 a.m., control of the disputed shares would transfer automatically.
Unless both Catherine Reed's legal heirs authenticated their identities.
Mallory and Daniel.
They had four minutes.
Daniel scanned his identification.
Mallory did the same.
The system requested biometric confirmation.
They completed it.
Then one final screen appeared.
CHOOSE TRUSTEE.
Three options.
Adrian Vale.
Victor Kane.
Rebecca Sloan.
Mallory stared.
Daniel looked at her.
"Mom built this."
"Why?"
"So neither of us could inherit without deciding who we trusted."
Adrian stepped backward.
"I won't tell you what to choose."
That mattered.
Victor would have pressured them.
Rebecca would have manipulated them.
Adrian gave them freedom.
Mallory selected Adrian.
Daniel did too.
The system processed.
12:59:52.
Eight seconds.
Confirmation appeared.
TRANSFER BLOCKED.
Victor's merger collapsed.
Adrian exhaled.
Mallory almost cried.
Then the screen changed again.
A live video appeared.
Rebecca Sloan sat inside a dark room.
Beside her was a woman.
Older.
Silver-haired.
Alive.
Mallory's knees weakened.
"Mama."
Catherine Reed looked directly into the camera.
Rebecca smiled.
"You've taken the company from me."
Mallory stepped closer.
"Let her go."
Rebecca shook her head.
"You still don't understand."
She leaned toward the camera.
"The company was never the prize."
Behind Catherine, a steel door opened.
Someone entered.
Adrian's expression changed.
He whispered:
"Mom?"
Eleanor Vale stepped into view.
Both missing women were alive.
May you like
Rebecca looked between them and smiled.
"Now we can finally discuss what your mothers stole."
