Chapter 5 - Rose Marin

Elena stood frozen.
The voice came again.
"Elena, sweetheart."
Her face broke.
"No."
Dante stepped between her and the door.
"Don't open it."
Elena stared at him.
"That's my mother."
"Maybe."
"I know her voice."
"So did I."
He didn't need to explain.
He had heard Lorenzo's voice from a speaker.
Elena understood.
Lucia approached the door.
"Rose?"
A pause.
Then:
"Lucy."
Lucia closed her eyes.
Only Rose called her that.
Still Dante refused to move.
"Question," he said.
"What?" the voice asked.
"Something only Rose would know."
Silence.
Dante looked at Elena.
She was trembling.
Finally Elena whispered, "When I was six, I broke something and blamed the dog. What was it?"
The answer came instantly.
"My mother's blue porcelain bird. You glued the wings backward and cried when I noticed."
Elena made a sound somewhere between laughter and sobbing.
Dante opened the door.
Rose Marin stood there.
Older.
Thin.
A scar crossed her forehead.
But Elena knew her.
She ran.
Rose caught her.
For several moments nobody spoke.
Dante looked away, giving them privacy.
He understood too well what it felt like to recover a dead parent in a single afternoon.
Eventually Elena stepped back.
"You let me think you were dead."
Rose cried harder.
"I had to."
"No."
"Elena—"
"No. You chose to."
Rose accepted the blow.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Lorenzo threatened you."
Elena laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps saying they lied to protect me."
Rose's face crumpled.
"It doesn't make the lie hurt less."
"No."
"It just means I was a coward who thought distance could keep you alive."
Dante watched Elena.
She didn't forgive immediately.
He respected that.
Love did not erase twelve years.
Rose turned to Dante.
"You look like Lucia."
"Most people said my father."
"They were afraid of him."
Dante almost smiled.
Rose's expression changed.
"Where's the ledger?"
"Safe."
"It isn't safe anywhere in this house."
"Then tell me what it proves."
Rose looked at Lucia.
"Everything."
"Names?"
"Names, payments, offshore accounts, recordings. Enough to dismantle Lorenzo's network."
"Why didn't you release it years ago?"
"Because your father had protection at every level. Judges. Detectives. Federal contacts. If we sent evidence to the wrong person, we would disappear."
Dante thought of Elena's fear of hospitals and police.
"Who can we trust?"
Rose reached into her jacket.
"One prosecutor."
She handed Dante a card.
Evelyn Shaw.
Dante recognized the name.
Federal organized crime division.
"She refused one of my father's bribes fifteen years ago."
Rose nodded.
"She's been building a case ever since."
"Then why hasn't she arrested him?"
"Because he's legally dead."
Dante understood.
A dead man could move through shell companies and proxies while everyone targeted the living successor.
Dante.
His father's crimes had become his inheritance.
"Was I supposed to take the blame?" he asked.
Rose looked at him sadly.
"Eventually."
Dante nodded.
That felt like Lorenzo.
"What about Marco?"
"He's clean."
Dante looked at her.
"The ledger says—"
"He was being paid."
"For what?"
"To feed us information."
Dante froze.
"Marco worked with you?"
"For eight years."
"Without telling me."
"He was trying to locate Lorenzo."
Rage returned.
"Everyone has been protecting me by lying to me."
Lucia said softly, "Yes."
Dante turned away.
He needed space.
Instead Elena followed him.
"You okay?"
"No."
It was the first honest answer he'd given anyone in hours.
Elena nodded.
"Me neither."
They stood in silence.
Then Dante looked at her bruised wrist.
"I should have seen something sooner."
"You met me today."
"Not you. Everything."
She understood.
"He built the lie before you were old enough to question it."
Dante looked at her.
"You're defending me?"
"No."
A faint smile touched her mouth.
"I'm reminding you that guilt and responsibility aren't the same thing."
Dante stared.
He liked the way she spoke to him.
Not as a boss.
Not as a monster.
Not as a savior.
As a man standing beside her in a disaster neither had chosen.
Marco's phone rang.
Dante answered.
Marco's voice came through.
"Boss."
"Where are you?"
"Old chapel."
Dante tensed.
"You're free?"
"Not exactly."
A gunshot cracked through the phone.
Dante's grip tightened.
Marco continued, breathing hard.
"Stefan left two men. Sofia got one loose."
"Is she okay?"
"She's bleeding but alive."
"Can you get out?"
"Maybe."
Rose whispered, "Ask about Isabella."
Dante did.
Marco was silent.
"She's here."
"And Lorenzo?"
"No."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Then Marco lowered his voice.
"But I heard Isabella talking."
"What did she say?"
"She said Lorenzo isn't at Blackthorn."
Dante frowned.
"He was on the dining room camera."
"Recorded feed."
Dante remembered the timestamp.
Could have been spoofed.
"Where is he?"
"I heard one word."
"What?"
"Harbor."
Rose went pale.
"No."
Dante looked at her.
"What?"
"The Valeri shipping terminal."
Dante's businesses had divested from illegal shipping years ago, but one private dock remained under a holding company.
Rose spoke quickly.
"There's an underground archive beneath Warehouse Nine."
"Another 417?"
"Worse."
"What?"
"Original records."
Dante understood.
If Lorenzo reached them first, he could destroy evidence.
Rose shook her head.
"Not just records."
"What else?"
She looked at Elena.
"People."
Elena frowned.
"What people?"
"Witnesses."
Dante's stomach tightened.
"You mean prisoners."
Rose didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Dante made a decision.
"Marco, get Sofia out. Meet us at the lower gate."
"Dante—"
"That's an order."
"Understood."
The call ended.
Lucia grabbed Dante's sleeve.
"You can't go to the harbor."
"Yes, I can."
"Lorenzo wants you there."
"I know."
"He wants the ledger."
"He won't get it."
Rose studied him.
"You have a plan?"
"Not yet."
Elena said, "I do."
Everyone turned.
She held Victor's copied flash drive.
"Victor's messages include access codes."
Dante stared.
"For the harbor?"
"Some coordinates. Door numbers. Security schedules."
Rose took the drive.
"My God."
Elena's expression hardened.
"He shouldn't have left his phone unlocked."
For the first time all day, Dante smiled.
A real smile.
"Remind me never to underestimate a waitress."
She looked at him.
"Start now."
They prepared quickly.
Dante refused to bring Elena to the harbor.
Elena refused to stay.
The argument lasted forty seconds.
She won.
Not because Dante stopped worrying.
Because he finally understood that protecting her didn't mean removing her choices.
They left Blackthorn House through the tunnel.
Marco met them outside with Sofia.
Sofia's face was bruised.
Dante embraced her.
Then pushed her back.
"We're going to have a very long conversation."
"I know."
"After."
She nodded.
"After."
Marco apologized.
Dante cut him off.
"Later."
They drove in two vehicles.
Night had fallen by the time they reached the harbor.
Warehouse Nine stood dark beside the water.
Elena used Victor's codes.
The first door opened.
Inside they found empty offices.
The second door led underground.
At the bottom, Dante found cages.
Empty.
Chains.
Old mattresses.
Elena looked sick.
Rose whispered, "Lorenzo used this place for leverage."
Dante said nothing.
He would burn it to the ground after tonight.
They reached the archive.
Rows of cabinets filled the room.
Marco found computers.
Rose found documents.
Then Elena saw a recent photograph pinned to a corkboard.
It showed her leaving her apartment.
Another showed her at work.
Another showed her asleep on a bus.
Victor had been following her for months.
Dante ripped the photographs down.
Elena noticed one more.
A picture of Dante at his mother's grave.
The date was only six months earlier.
Someone had been watching him too.
A speaker crackled overhead.
Lorenzo's voice filled the room.
"Welcome, son."
Dante looked up.
"Lorenzo."
"You've always been predictable."
"Really? Then you know what's coming."
Lorenzo laughed.
"Violence?"
"No."
Dante looked at Rose.
"Exposure."
Silence.
Then Lorenzo said, "You don't have enough."
Rose opened the ledger.
"We do."
Lorenzo's voice changed.
"Rose."
"Hello, Lorenzo."
"You should have stayed dead."
"So should you."
Marco connected the archive server to an encrypted uplink.
Evelyn Shaw had been waiting.
Files began transferring.
Ten percent.
Twenty.
Thirty.
Lorenzo's voice lost its calm.
"Stop."
Dante smiled.
"No."
Forty.
Fifty.
An alarm began screaming.
Steel shutters dropped.
Marco shouted, "He's locking us in."
Sixty-two percent.
Smoke began entering through ceiling vents.
Elena coughed.
"Fire!"
Dante grabbed a chair and smashed the vent.
Rose searched for another exit.
Upload: seventy-nine percent.
The temperature climbed.
Lucia wasn't with them.
She had remained with Sofia outside.
Dante thanked God for that.
Eighty-seven.
A steel door at the far end suddenly opened.
Victor Hale stood there.
Gun in hand.
Elena froze.
Victor smiled at her.
"Found you."
Dante stepped forward.
Victor pointed the weapon at Elena.
"One more step and she's dead."
Upload: ninety-four percent.
Dante stopped.
Victor moved closer.
"Give me the ledger."
Elena looked at Dante.
Dante looked at the upload.
Ninety-six.
Victor shouted, "Now!"
Dante slowly lifted the ledger.
Then Elena spoke.
"You made one mistake."
Victor sneered.
"What?"
"You taught me to be afraid of you."
Her hand moved behind her back.
Victor's expression changed.
Elena held his stolen phone.
She pressed PLAY.
Victor's own recorded voice filled the burning archive.
"If Lorenzo goes down, Isabella goes down with him. And if she goes down, Stefan kills Lorenzo before he can talk."
Victor went white.
Dante stared at him.
Lorenzo had heard it too.
The speaker went silent.
Upload: one hundred percent.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Victor backed toward the door.
"No."
A gunshot sounded behind him.
Victor fell.
Elena screamed.
Dante pulled her behind him.
Someone stepped through the smoke.
Lorenzo Valeri.
He lowered the smoking gun.
Then looked at Dante.
"Now you know why I came back."
His gaze moved to Elena.
"But you still don't know why she was chosen."
Lorenzo reached into his coat.
He removed a small envelope.
Elena's childhood name was written on the front.
May you like
He smiled.
"Rose never told you what happened the night Elena was born."
