Chapter 4 - The Mother Who Never Died

Dante could not move.

His mother stood twenty feet away.

Lucia Valeri.

Dead for twelve years.

Alive in his cellar.

Older.

Scarred along one side of her neck.

But unmistakably his mother.

Dante had imagined this impossible moment thousands of times after losing her.

In dreams she returned young.

Smiling.

Calling him by the childhood nickname nobody else used.

Reality was different.

Reality stood trembling and looked afraid of him.

"Mom?"

Lucia cried.

That broke him.

Dante crossed the room and wrapped his arms around her.

For one second, the feared Dante Valeri became only a son.

Then Lucia pulled back.

"We don't have time."

Dante wiped his eyes with the heel of his hand.

"You've had twelve years."

"I know."

"Then give me two minutes."

"Dante—"

"Two."

She nodded.

He looked at her scars.

"Did Father do this?"

"Yes."

"Was the fire meant to kill you?"

"Yes."

"Sofia knew you lived."

"For a while."

"And Rose?"

Lucia looked at Elena.

"Rose saved me."

Elena's eyes filled.

"Then why did my mother die?"

Lucia's face changed.

"Because she wouldn't stop helping me."

Elena leaned against the table.

Dante moved toward her, but she lifted a hand.

"I'm fine."

She wasn't.

Nobody in that cellar was.

Lucia explained quickly.

Lorenzo had built a network using legitimate businesses as fronts for bribery and extortion. Rose, working as his private bookkeeper, discovered it.

Lucia had already suspected her husband.

Together, the two women copied evidence.

Lorenzo learned of it.

He arranged the west-wing fire.

Lucia escaped through a service tunnel.

Rose helped hide her.

Then Rose was killed.

"Car accident," Elena whispered.

Lucia shook her head.

"No accident."

Elena closed her eyes.

Dante felt rage rise in him.

But Lucia caught his wrist.

"Rage is what your father expects."

"He murdered Rose."

"And tried to murder me."

"Then why shouldn't I kill him?"

"Because that's how he wins."

Dante looked at her.

Lucia's voice softened.

"You spent twelve years becoming everything he said you could never be. Don't become him now because he finally came back."

Dante released a slow breath.

Elena opened the ledger.

"If this proves everything, we don't need to become him."

Lucia nodded.

"Exactly."

Dante looked at her.

"You knew about the ledger?"

"I knew Rose hid one copy."

"Why Elena?"

"Because Rose trusted that someday Elena might be the only person Lorenzo wouldn't watch."

Elena laughed bitterly.

"He watched me."

"Eventually."

"Why did Victor hire me?"

Lucia frowned.

"He didn't choose you by accident."

Elena's face changed.

"Then he knew who I was before the note."

"Probably."

Dante asked the question nobody wanted.

"If Lorenzo is my father..."

He looked at Elena.

"...and the certificate says he's hers..."

Lucia shook her head.

"It's false."

Elena stared.

"How do you know?"

"Because Lorenzo used false paternity records to control people. Rose told me he planned to make Elena believe she belonged to the Valeri family."

"Why?"

"To make her doubt her mother."

Dante looked relieved, then angry at himself for feeling relief.

Elena noticed but said nothing.

Lucia reached into her coat.

She removed a sealed envelope.

"Rose gave me this before she died."

Elena's name was written on it.

Elena's hands trembled as she opened it.

A letter.

She read silently.

Then tears fell.

Dante didn't ask.

After several moments she handed it to him.

Rose's letter explained that Elena's father was a teacher named Michael Marin who died before Elena was born.

Lorenzo had nothing to do with her birth.

But Rose had discovered something even more dangerous.

Lorenzo's network still had powerful allies after his supposed death.

One of them remained inside Dante's organization.

Marco.

Dante stared at the ledger again.

"Marco betrayed me."

Lucia shook her head.

"Maybe."

"His name is here."

"So is mine."

Dante looked.

She was right.

Lucia Valeri appeared beside several transactions.

"They framed records deliberately," she said. "The ledger tells you who received money. Not why."

A crash came from upstairs.

Dante raised the gun.

Lucia whispered, "They're searching the house."

"There's another exit?"

She nodded.

"Tunnel."

They moved through the wine cellar toward an old door.

Halfway there, Elena stopped.

"My bag."

Dante turned.

"What?"

"When Victor searched it, he didn't find everything."

"What did you hide?"

"A flash drive."

Lucia stared.

"Where?"

"In my shoe."

Elena gave a small, exhausted smile.

"Waitresses learn people don't look at your shoes."

She pulled a tiny drive from beneath the inner lining.

Dante almost laughed.

"What is it?"

"I copied Victor's phone three nights ago."

"You did what?"

"He left it unlocked while he was drunk."

Dante looked impressed.

Elena plugged it into Lucia's small laptop.

Folders appeared.

Messages.

Photos.

Audio.

One conversation was between Victor and Stefan Rizzo.

Another between Victor and someone labeled M.

Dante opened it.

Victor: The girl knows too much.

M: Keep her working. Do not frighten her away.

Victor: She's asking about Rose.

M: Then make her look unstable.

Victor: And Dante?

M: He'll believe security.

Dante reread the last line.

Security.

Marco headed security.

But so did Stefan.

Dante opened the metadata.

The number attached to M belonged to a prepaid phone.

No identity.

Another message appeared.

Sent that morning.

M: At 4:17, put her near the spring.

Victor: Why?

M: Dante needs to see the bruises.

Elena backed away.

"What?"

Dante's blood went cold.

Victor had been told to make sure Dante noticed her injuries.

This wasn't simply Elena escaping into the hot spring.

Someone had choreographed it.

Even the moment Dante found her.

Lucia whispered, "Someone is manipulating both of you."

Dante looked at Elena.

"Did Victor put you in the hot spring?"

"No. I ran there."

"Why there?"

"There was a woman."

"What woman?"

"She opened the service gate."

Dante's jaw tightened.

"What did she look like?"

"I barely saw her."

"Hair?"

"Dark."

"Age?"

"Maybe forty."

Lucia suddenly looked frightened.

"What?"

Elena continued.

"She told me, 'Go to the water. He'll find you there.'"

Lucia sat down.

Dante crouched beside her.

"Who?"

"I know who that sounds like."

"Tell me."

Lucia whispered a name.

"Isabella Rizzo."

Dante stared.

"Stefan's mother?"

Lucia nodded.

"She worked for Lorenzo."

"Past tense?"

"I thought she died."

Dante almost laughed at the pattern.

"Apparently nobody dies in this family."

Lucia didn't smile.

"Isabella wasn't family."

"What was she?"

Lucia looked toward the tunnel.

"Lorenzo's partner."

The pieces shifted.

Perhaps Sofia had been coerced.

Perhaps Marco had been framed.

Perhaps Victor was only one layer.

And perhaps the woman who had deliberately guided Elena into Dante's private hot spring had known exactly what would happen.

Dante's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Marco.

Alive.

Tied to a chair.

Beside him sat Sofia.

Also tied.

Below the image was one sentence.

Bring Elena and the ledger to the old chapel.

Lucia whispered, "It's a trap."

Dante nodded.

"Of course."

Another message arrived.

A video.

Dante opened it.

Stefan Rizzo stood behind Marco and Sofia.

He smiled.

"You have thirty minutes."

Then he stepped aside.

Someone else stood behind him.

A woman with dark hair streaked with silver.

Elena whispered, "That's her."

"The woman at the gate?"

"Yes."

Lucia went pale.

"Isabella."

Isabella leaned toward the camera.

"Lucia, you've hidden long enough."

Dante looked at his mother.

Isabella smiled.

"And Dante should finally learn why Lorenzo faked his death."

The video ended.

Dante turned toward Lucia.

She was crying.

"What hasn't anyone told me?"

Lucia said nothing.

Dante stepped closer.

"Mom."

Her answer came as a whisper.

"Your father wasn't hiding from the police."

"Then who?"

Lucia looked at Elena.

"Rose."

Elena frowned.

"My mother died eleven years ago."

Lucia shook her head.

"No."

Elena stopped breathing.

Lucia took her hand.

"Rose didn't die in that car."

Elena stared at her.

Dante stared too.

"Then where is she?"

Before Lucia could answer, someone knocked three times from the other side of the tunnel door.

A woman's voice whispered through the wood.

"Elena?"

Elena's knees nearly gave way.

She knew that voice.

May you like

She had not heard it since she was sixteen years old.

Her mother was on the other side.
