Chapter 7 - The Truth Hidden Behind The Photograph

The photograph fell from Roman's hand.
Not because he dropped it.
Because his fingers stopped working.
I watched his face change.
The same man who could walk into a room and make everyone silent.
The same man who could negotiate million-dollar deals without showing emotion.
The same man who never looked surprised.
Was completely broken by one picture.
Claire stood beside me.
Neither of us spoke.
Because we knew what that photograph meant.
Roman picked it up again.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like the paper itself could hurt him.
"This isn't possible."
Adrian Cross stood at the end of the hallway.
His expression didn't change.
"It is."
Roman looked at him.
"You were there."
Adrian smiled slightly.
"Yes."
"That night?"
"Yes."
The silence that followed was unbearable.
Roman looked at Claire.
Then me.
Then the photograph.
"Explain."
Nobody answered.
His voice became louder.
"I said explain."
The walls of the abandoned training facility seemed to carry his anger.
But Adrian remained calm.
That was what scared me.
People like Adrian weren't dangerous because they lost control.
They were dangerous because they never did.
"You were told Claire disappeared."
Roman stared at him.
"She did."
"No."
Adrian stepped forward.
"She escaped."
Roman's eyes narrowed.
"From who?"
Adrian looked at me.
And I already knew.
The answer was going to hurt everyone.
"From your family."
Roman shook his head.
"No."
Claire whispered:
"Roman..."
He looked at her.
"No."
There was pain in his voice now.
Not anger.
Denial.
Because sometimes the truth wasn't difficult because it was complicated.
It was difficult because it destroyed the people you loved.
Adrian walked closer.
"Your father built an empire."
Roman's expression hardened.
"Don't talk about my father."
"Why?"
Adrian stopped.
"Because you still believe he was the man he wanted you to believe."
Roman said nothing.
I watched him.
I had seen this before.
The moment when someone realized the version of their life they trusted was incomplete.
The moment when memories started changing.
Every conversation.
Every decision.
Every person they believed.
"What does Evelyn have to do with this?" Roman asked.
Adrian looked at me.
"Everything."
My chest tightened.
Roman turned toward me.
"What did you find?"
I looked away.
Because that was the question I had avoided for six years.
Not what happened.
Not who was responsible.
What did I find?
The answer was simple.
I found the truth.
And the truth ruined everything.
"Your sister came to me because she found financial records."
Roman frowned.
"What kind of records?"
"Payments."
"To who?"
I looked at Adrian.
"People connected to your family."
Roman's face changed.
"That's not enough."
"No."
I nodded.
"It wasn't."
I remembered that night.
The files.
The names.
The evidence.
The reason Claire was scared.
"But then I found something else."
Roman waited.
"What?"
I swallowed.
"A list."
"A list of what?"
"People who needed to disappear."
Nobody spoke.
Roman looked at Claire.
"Your name was on it."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Yes."
The word was barely audible.
Roman stepped back.
Like the ground had moved beneath him.
"My sister was targeted?"
Adrian answered.
"Yes."
"By my family?"
Adrian didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
That was the answer.
Roman looked at him.
"Then why are you alive?"
Adrian smiled.
"Because someone wanted me to take the blame."
My eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Adrian looked at me.
"You thought I betrayed you."
I said nothing.
Because I did.
Six years ago, I believed Adrian was the person who caused everything.
The person who chased us.
The person who burned the evidence.
But now...
I wasn't sure.
"You were there when the building caught fire."
Adrian nodded.
"I was."
"You left us."
His expression changed slightly.
For the first time, emotion appeared.
Regret.
"I left because I was trying to save you."
I laughed quietly.
A bitter sound.
"That's not what it looked like."
"No."
Adrian looked at the floor.
"It wasn't."
Roman stepped closer.
"Then tell us the truth."
Adrian looked at him.
"Your father found out Claire had proof."
Roman went silent.
"My father?"
"Yes."
"He's dead."
"That doesn't erase what he did."
Roman looked away.
I saw the conflict in his eyes.
The fight between loyalty and reality.
Then Adrian reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small device.
A recording device.
Old.
Damaged.
He placed it on the table.
"This is why Claire had to disappear."
Roman stared at it.
"What is it?"
"Your father's final recording."
The room froze.
Roman didn't touch it.
"Impossible."
Adrian looked at him.
"That word has protected you for six years."
Then he pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
A man's voice appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
Roman's face changed instantly.
Because he recognized it.
His father.
"If you are hearing this, then I failed."
Roman stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
"I spent years believing power could protect my family."
A pause.
"But power attracts people who want more."
Claire covered her mouth.
I listened.
Every word.
Every second.
"Adrian knows the truth."
Roman looked at Adrian.
The recording continued.
"And Evelyn Mercer is the only person who knows what happened that night."
My body went cold.
Roman looked at me.
The recording wasn't finished.
"There is something Evelyn must never reveal."
Static.
Then one final sentence.
A sentence that changed everything.
"Because if she tells Roman the truth about Claire's disappearance, he will learn who his real enemy has always been."
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Roman turned toward me.
Slowly.
"What truth?"
I couldn't answer.
Because I knew what came next.
The one secret Claire begged me to protect.
The one secret that could destroy Roman's entire world.
Adrian looked at me.
"It's time."
I shook my head.
"No."
"Evelyn."
"No."
Roman stepped closer.
"What happened?"
I looked at Claire.
She looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Because Claire knew.
She knew I couldn't keep running.
I took a breath.
"Your sister didn't disappear because someone wanted to kill her."
Roman waited.
"She disappeared because she found out someone was trying to kill..."
My voice stopped.
The lights inside the building suddenly flickered.
Everyone turned.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone was walking toward us.
Adrian's expression changed for the first time.
Fear.
He whispered:
"No."
Roman looked at him.
"Who is that?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Because the person entering the hallway was someone none of us expected.
Someone who should have been impossible.
Someone who had been controlling everything from the beginning.
The figure stepped into the light.
May you like
And Roman heard the voice of the person he thought was gone forever...
"Hello, son."
