Chapter 5 - The Secret Inside The Burned Room

The door moved.

Slowly.

Almost silently.

But I heard it.

Everyone heard it.

Roman stepped in front of me without thinking.

That surprised me.

Because men like Roman Vale didn't protect people.

They controlled situations.

They calculated risks.

They watched from a distance.

But this time, he moved first.

"Stay behind me."

I looked at him.

"You don't know what's behind that door."

His eyes stayed fixed on the darkness.

"Neither do you."

That was the problem.

He was right.

I had spent six years believing I knew exactly what happened inside this building.

I believed Claire found me here.

I believed this was where everything ended.

But now someone had entered a room that was supposed to be empty.

Someone had taken a photograph of us before we even knew they were there.

And someone knew my real name.

"Evelyn."

The whisper came again.

This time louder.

My entire body froze.

Because it wasn't a stranger's voice.

It wasn't a threat.

It was familiar.

Too familiar.

Roman looked at me.

"You know that voice."

I didn't answer.

I couldn't.

Because the truth was already forming in my mind.

The person behind that door wasn't supposed to exist.

The same way Claire wasn't supposed to exist.

Bennett slowly reached for his phone.

Roman stopped him.

"No."

Bennett looked confused.

"What?"

"No calls."

"Roman, we don't know what's in there."

"I know."

His eyes never left the door.

"That's why."

I understood what he meant.

Calling for help meant admitting someone else had control of the situation.

Roman Vale hated losing control.

I hated something else.

Being found.

The door opened another inch.

A shadow appeared.

Then a hand.

A woman's hand.

My breath disappeared.

Because I recognized the ring.

A small silver ring with a tiny crack across the surface.

Claire's ring.

The woman stepped into the light.

And for a second, nobody moved.

Because seeing someone alive was sometimes more shocking than seeing a ghost.

"Claire."

Roman said her name like he wasn't sure he was allowed to.

The woman looked at him.

And her eyes filled with tears.

"Roman."

That was all.

One word.

Six years of pain inside it.

Roman took one step forward.

Then stopped.

Like he was afraid moving too quickly would make her disappear.

"You're alive."

Claire looked down.

"I was."

The answer confused him.

"What does that mean?"

She looked at me.

Not Roman.

Me.

And I immediately knew.

She wasn't here because she missed him.

She was here because she needed me.

"Evelyn."

I hated hearing my name from her.

Because Claire was the only person who knew what it really meant.

"What happened?" Roman asked.

Claire didn't answer.

Instead, she looked around the abandoned training facility.

"This place isn't empty."

Bennett immediately turned.

"What?"

Claire pointed toward the old hallway.

"Someone has been using this building."

Roman's expression hardened.

"Who?"

Claire looked at him.

"The same people who wanted me gone."

The silence after that sentence felt heavier than anything before.

Roman stepped closer.

"Who?"

Claire looked at me again.

And I knew.

She didn't want to say it.

Because once the words were spoken, there was no going back.

"Your family."

Roman went completely still.

"No."

Claire's eyes filled with sadness.

"I wish I was wrong."

"Don't."

His voice became colder.

"Don't accuse my family without proof."

Claire reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Folded.

Damaged.

She handed it to him.

"This was found inside your father's private files."

Roman didn't take it.

"My father died years ago."

"I know."

"Then how?"

Claire looked at me.

"Because someone wanted us to find it now."

Roman finally took the envelope.

His hands were steady.

But his face wasn't.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

I couldn't read everything.

Only one line.

But that one line was enough.

ROMAN VALE MUST NEVER KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT EVELYN MERCER.

Roman looked up.

Slowly.

His eyes moved between Claire and me.

"Why?"

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was complicated.

Because the truth wasn't one secret.

It was a chain.

And every person who touched it lost something.

"I need to understand," Roman said.

Claire looked exhausted.

"You need to understand why Evelyn disappeared."

My heart tightened.

Roman looked at me.

"You know."

It wasn't a question.

I looked away.

Because I did.

I knew more than I wanted to.

Six years ago, I wasn't running from the world.

I was running from what I discovered.

Claire had found evidence.

Evidence that someone close to the Vale family had manipulated events for years.

Money.

Contracts.

People's lives.

Even deaths.

But Claire didn't know the whole truth.

Neither did I.

And the person who did...

Was the person who made sure we both disappeared.

"What happened that night?" Roman asked.

Claire sat down.

For the first time, she looked tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

"The night Evelyn vanished, someone followed her."

Roman looked at me.

"Who?"

Claire shook her head.

"We never saw his face."

My eyes narrowed.

"We?"

Claire looked at me.

"You remember."

I did.

The black car.

The headlights.

The voice.

The warning.

"You weren't supposed to survive."

Roman heard the words.

His expression changed.

"What?"

I didn't speak.

Because I had never told anyone.

Not even Claire.

The night everything ended, someone had whispered those exact words before leaving me.

I thought it was a threat.

Now I wondered if it was a warning.

Roman stood.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

I looked at him.

"Because I didn't trust you."

The honesty hit harder than an insult.

Roman stared at me.

"Why?"

"Because everyone around you lied."

His face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

Because he knew there was truth in that.

Before he could respond, Bennett's phone suddenly rang.

Everyone turned.

Bennett looked at the screen.

Then his face went pale.

"Roman..."

"What?"

Bennett didn't answer.

He slowly handed the phone over.

Roman looked at the message.

And immediately his entire body became tense.

"What is it?" Claire asked.

Roman didn't respond.

I stepped closer.

"Roman."

He looked at me.

Then showed me the screen.

It was a photo.

Taken inside this building.

Minutes ago.

It showed the four of us standing in the hallway.

But there was something else.

Something behind us.

Someone standing in the darkness.

Watching.

I looked closer.

And recognized the person.

My blood went cold.

Because that face belonged to someone who had died six years ago.

Claire covered her mouth.

Roman whispered:

"No..."

Then another message appeared.

One sentence.

One name.

May you like

And it was the last person any of us expected to see.

"Ask Evelyn why she buried me."
