Chapter 5 - The Secret Beneath the Foundation

Emily recognized the coat immediately.
Brown wool.
Missing button.
Her father had worn it during the last winter before he disappeared.
"Where is he?"
Richard closed the door.
"Alive."
Emily crossed the room.
"Where?"
"Safe."
"From whom?"
Richard looked at Adrian.
"Victor."
Adrian's expression didn't change.
"Start talking."
Richard admitted he had known Victor survived.
Years earlier, Victor had staged his death after Margaret gathered enough evidence to threaten him with prosecution.
Richard had helped him disappear.
Not because he approved.
Because Victor threatened Vanessa.
"I spent fourteen years trying to undo one cowardly decision," Richard said.
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"You expect sympathy?"
"No."
"Good."
Richard explained that Daniel Carter had resurfaced months earlier with evidence capable of proving Victor still controlled hidden accounts.
They arranged a meeting.
Victor discovered it.
Daniel vanished again.
"Where is Daniel now?" Emily asked.
"I don't know."
She slapped the table.
"You walked in with his coat."
"He left it in my car three nights ago."
"Three nights?"
"He was here?"
Richard nodded.
Emily wanted to scream.
Her father had been minutes away.
Richard handed her a folded paper from the coat pocket.
Emily opened it.
Two words.
SARAH'S BOX.
"What is that?"
Richard looked toward the old foundation portrait hanging behind Adrian's desk.
"Something your mother hid."
They removed the portrait.
Behind it was a wall safe.
Inside sat a small blue box.
Emily opened it.
Her mother's wedding ring lay on top.
She began crying before she could stop herself.
Beneath the ring was a memory card.
Adrian found a laptop disconnected from the foundation network.
They inserted it.
One video.
Sarah Carter appeared onscreen.
Emily stopped breathing.
"If Emily ever sees this, then we failed to keep this away from her."
Sarah looked tired.
But alive.
Daniel sat beside her.
Margaret Bennett stood behind them.
Sarah continued.
"We discovered that Victor Bennett diverted money from pediatric assistance programs into private investments. Margaret tried to stop him. Richard helped us collect evidence. Thomas signed documents under pressure, but later helped preserve the records."
Emily looked at Richard.
He had told the truth.
Then Sarah said something unexpected.
"The missing money was restored."
Adrian frowned.
Margaret moved closer to the camera.
"But that doesn't erase what Victor did. And it doesn't explain the threats."
The video ended with Sarah holding up a document.
A list of account numbers.
Emily searched the box.
The document wasn't there.
"Someone removed it," Adrian said.
Richard looked toward the safe.
"Only three people knew the combination."
"Who?"
"Margaret. Me."
"And?"
Richard swallowed.
"Victor."
The building alarm suddenly sounded.
Lights flashed.
A security announcement ordered evacuation.
Adrian looked toward the laptop.
"Coincidence?"
"No," Emily said.
They copied the memory card and left.
Outside, fire crews arrived.
No fire was found.
But when they returned thirty minutes later, the office had been searched.
The blue box was gone.
So was Sarah's wedding ring.
Emily stood in the wreckage.
Someone had been close enough to take the one object that mattered to her.
Then Adrian's assistant called from downstairs.
"Mr. Bennett, there's a man here asking for Emily Carter."
Emily ran.
An older man stood in the lobby.
Thin.
Gray-haired.
Exhausted.
She stopped twenty feet away.
He turned.
Emily recognized his eyes.
"Dad?"
Daniel Carter began crying.
"Em."
She didn't move.
Six years of anger held her in place.
Then Daniel whispered:
"I'm sorry."
Emily crossed the distance and struck him once across the chest.
"You left us."
"I know."
"You left me with everything."
"I know."
"Mom died and you left me with Noah!"
"I know."
She hit his chest again.
Then she collapsed against him.
Daniel wrapped his arms around his daughter.
"I'm sorry."
She cried until she couldn't breathe.
Adrian quietly turned away.
Later, Daniel told them everything.
Victor had threatened Noah.
That was why he disappeared.
He had spent six years collecting evidence.
"Why now?"
"Because Victor is dying."
Adrian stiffened.
Daniel looked at him.
"And he wants control of the foundation returned to his family before he dies."
"It is his family."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Adrian frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel reached into his bag.
He removed a sealed DNA report.
"I found this among Margaret's private documents."
Adrian didn't touch it.
Daniel placed it on the table.
"Victor Bennett wasn't your biological father."
Silence.
Adrian stared at the envelope.
"Then who was?"
Daniel looked toward Richard.
Richard's face went white.
Adrian slowly turned.
Richard whispered:
"Your mother made me promise never to tell you."
Adrian stepped toward him.
"Tell me now."
Richard opened his mouth.
Before he could speak, Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
"Victor."
He answered.
A weak male voice came through.
"You've finally brought them together."
Daniel looked around.
"Where are you?"
Victor laughed.
"Closer than you think."
The elevator chimed.
May you like
The doors began to open.
And someone inside said Adrian's name.
