Chapter 4 - What Emily's Father Left Behind

Emily reached Noah's hospital room less than an hour later.

He was safe.

Security footage showed a man in a gray coat entering the corridor, but his face never appeared clearly.

The note was real.

Emily recognized her father's handwriting.

On the back was another address.

This one led to a storage unit in Queens.

Inside they found six years of Daniel Carter's life.

Clothes.

Maps.

Receipts.

Newspaper clippings.

Photographs of the Bennett Foundation.

And dozens of letters addressed to Emily and Noah.

Never mailed.

Emily opened one.

Dear Em,

Today you turned twenty-two.

I stood across the street from the bakery where you bought Noah that ridiculous chocolate cake.

I wanted to walk over.

I didn't.

If you hate me someday, I will understand.

Emily cried silently.

Adrian stood several feet away and gave her privacy.

She read another.

Then another.

Her father had watched from a distance.

He had remembered birthdays.

Noah's graduations.

Her mother's funeral.

He had even written about the funeral.

I was there.

Emily stopped.

The letter continued.

I stood behind the stone wall because I believed Victor's people were watching you.

She looked at Adrian.

"Your father."

Adrian nodded.

"Apparently."

They searched deeper.

A locked metal case contained financial records and a flash drive.

The files showed payments continuing for years through companies connected to the Bennett Foundation.

But one signature appeared repeatedly.

Thomas Bennett.

Emily stared.

"My father warned me about him."

Adrian didn't defend his uncle.

"Then we find Thomas."

They found him first.

Thomas called.

He asked them to meet at a public restaurant.

When they arrived, he looked exhausted.

"I ran because Daniel called me too."

Emily stared.

"What did he say?"

"That Victor had found him."

Adrian leaned forward.

"My father is alive?"

Thomas nodded.

"I believe so."

"How?"

"The accident fourteen years ago wasn't what we were told."

Thomas admitted he had helped conceal financial irregularities—not because he stole money, but because Victor threatened Margaret and Sarah.

He had signed documents to keep the foundation functioning.

Those signatures now made him look guilty.

"Why should we believe you?" Emily asked.

"You shouldn't."

Thomas placed a key on the table.

"But you should see this."

The key opened a safe-deposit box.

Inside was Margaret Bennett's original ledger.

Every payment.

Every shell organization.

Every beneficiary.

Victor Bennett's name appeared throughout.

Then, on the final page, a second name appeared.

Vanessa Bennett.

Adrian stared.

"She was eighteen."

Thomas nodded.

"Her father controlled the account then. Vanessa inherited it later."

"Does she know?"

"I don't know."

Emily remembered Vanessa laughing at her.

Suddenly the cruelty seemed less random.

Had Vanessa recognized the name Carter?

They returned to the foundation offices.

Vanessa was waiting.

"You've been busy," she said.

Adrian shut the door.

"Did you know who Emily was?"

Vanessa's face changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

Emily saw it.

"You knew."

"No."

"You knew my name."

Vanessa looked away.

"When?"

No answer.

Emily stepped closer.

"When did you know?"

Vanessa finally whispered:

"Before the gala."

Adrian's face hardened.

"So it wasn't a joke."

Vanessa shook her head.

"I was told to embarrass her."

"By whom?"

Vanessa began crying.

Not elegantly.

Not strategically.

She looked terrified.

"My father."

Adrian stared.

"Uncle Richard?"

"He told me Emily might come to the gala. He said if she did, make her leave."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"Vanessa."

"He said the Carter family destroyed ours once and could do it again."

Emily felt sick.

Richard Bennett.

Adrian's uncle.

Vanessa's father.

A respected philanthropist.

A man who had delivered the opening speech that evening.

Adrian called him.

No answer.

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

"Don't."

"Why?"

"He knows you're looking."

"How?"

"Because I told him."

Silence.

Emily stared at her.

Vanessa looked ashamed.

"I was angry. After the gala. I told him you defended her."

Adrian stepped away.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Hello?"

A man's voice said:

"Son."

Adrian became completely still.

Emily knew instantly.

Victor.

Adrian's father.

The supposedly dead man spoke again.

"You've been opening doors your mother died trying to keep closed."

Adrian's face drained.

"Where are you?"

A soft laugh.

"Ask Emily."

Emily frowned.

Then someone knocked on the office door.

Three slow knocks.

Adrian turned.

The handle moved.

Vanessa whispered:

"My father never knocks."

May you like

The door opened.

And Richard Bennett walked in carrying Emily's father's coat.
