Chapter 5 - The Name Inside the Envelope

Nobody lowered a weapon.
Claire Mercer stepped slowly from the elevator.
She looked to be in her late fifties now, with silver threaded through dark hair and a scar running from her temple toward her ear.
Gabriel kept his pistol trained on her.
"You were declared dead."
"That was the idea."
Dennis stared as though he had seen a ghost.
"Claire."
"Hello, Dennis."
"You disappeared."
"I survived."
Mara pointed toward the envelope.
"My father gave you that?"
"Robert gave me several things."
"When?"
"The night before he died."
Mara took one step forward.
"Then where have you been?"
"Hiding from the same people trying to kill you."
"Fourteen years?"
"Victor Vale doesn't forget."
Gabriel finally lowered the pistol slightly.
"Neither do I."
Claire looked at him.
"You have your father's eyes."
"People keep saying comforting things today."
Claire handed Mara the envelope.
The handwriting on the front belonged to Robert.
FOR MARA ONLY.
Her fingers trembled.
She broke the seal.
Inside was one sheet.
Three sentences.
Mara,
If they tell you Victor ordered Sofia's death, they are telling you the truth, but not all of it.
Victor gave the order because someone more powerful demanded it.
Below was one name.
Arthur Voss.
Mara stared.
"The commissioner."
Claire nodded.
"Before he became commissioner."
Gabriel's expression darkened.
"Voss controlled Victor."
"Sometimes," Claire said. "Other times Victor controlled him. Their partnership changed depending on who had leverage."
Mara looked at Dennis.
"You knew?"
"No."
Claire laughed without humor.
"Dennis knew enough to run."
Dennis's face hardened.
"I spent fourteen years trying to stay alive."
"So did I."
Mara raised a hand.
"Enough."
Everyone stopped.
She was tired of being the only person in the room who didn't know her own history.
"From now on, nobody gives me half an answer."
Claire studied her.
Then nodded.
"Fair."
Mara held up Robert's letter.
"Why did Voss want my mother dead?"
"Because Sofia recorded him."
"Recorded what?"
"A meeting."
Claire sat at the table.
"In 2008, Voss arranged protection for narcotics shipments entering through the port. Victor provided warehouses. Two judges ensured warrants disappeared. Sofia found out."
"How?"
"She handled financial records for Vale Consolidated."
Gabriel looked surprised.
"Father told me she never participated."
"She didn't participate. She discovered."
Claire continued.
"Sofia secretly copied contracts and recorded a meeting between Voss and Victor."
"Where is the recording?"
"Robert hid it."
"In the flash drive?"
"No."
Mara frowned.
"Then where?"
Claire looked at the pistol.
"The gun."
Mara stared.
"The numbers?"
"Not the numbers."
Gabriel took the weapon.
Claire pointed toward the hollow grip.
"Robert modified it."
Gabriel removed the panel again.
Behind the engraved numbers was a thin metal plate.
He pried it free.
A tiny memory card dropped onto the table.
Mara laughed softly.
Her father had hidden the most dangerous evidence in plain sight.
Claire inserted the card into Elena's laptop.
A single audio file appeared.
They played it.
Static.
Then Voss's younger voice.
"If Sofia talks, you lose everything."
Victor responded.
"She's my sister."
"Then handle your family."
A pause.
Victor spoke again.
"And if I refuse?"
Voss answered.
"Then your brother learns what you've been doing with his companies."
Another voice entered.
Gabriel's father.
Anthony Vale.
"What are you two talking about?"
The recording became chaotic.
Victor lied.
Voss threatened.
Sofia's name was mentioned.
Then Anthony's voice.
"No one touches my sister."
Gabriel looked at Elena.
"You said Father killed her."
Elena covered her mouth.
Claire stopped the recording.
"Keep listening."
The audio resumed later.
A car.
Wind.
Sofia crying.
Anthony's voice again.
"Sofia, get in. I'm taking you to Robert."
Then a gunshot.
Mara stopped breathing.
Another gunshot.
Anthony shouted.
A third voice said, "Give me the recorder."
Victor.
Mara's skin went cold.
Elena stood suddenly.
"No."
Claire looked at her.
"What?"
"That's not what I remember."
"You were seventeen and injured."
"I saw my father holding the gun."
"After the shooting."
Elena shook her head.
"I thought—"
"You were supposed to think he killed Sofia."
Gabriel closed his eyes.
His father had spent the rest of his life carrying the blame.
Mara asked, "Did Anthony survive?"
"Yes. He was shot in the shoulder. Victor convinced everyone Sofia had betrayed the family and Anthony had lost control."
Mara looked at Gabriel.
"What happened to your father?"
"Heart attack six years ago."
Claire's expression suggested otherwise.
"Are you sure?"
Gabriel looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
"Anthony Vale was preparing to testify."
Silence.
"When?" Gabriel asked.
"The week he died."
Gabriel's jaw hardened.
Claire continued.
"His doctor signed the death certificate."
"Name."
"Dr. Martin Keene."
Dennis cursed.
Mara looked at him.
"You know him?"
"He treats Voss."
Gabriel walked away from the table.
For the first time, Mara saw something break through his control.
Not rage.
Grief.
His father had carried guilt for a murder he had tried to stop.
And had likely been murdered himself.
Mara understood that kind of wound.
She moved beside Gabriel.
"We expose them."
He looked at her.
"You don't have to."
"Yes, I do."
"This isn't your responsibility."
"My father died for it."
"So did mine."
"Exactly."
Something passed between them.
Not romance.
Not yet.
Recognition.
Two people inheriting consequences from dead parents.
Claire opened another folder.
"We have evidence, but evidence means nothing if Voss controls the people receiving it."
Mara thought.
"The board meeting."
Gabriel looked at her.
"What about it?"
"Victor needs control of the company."
"Yes."
"If he believes you're dead and I'm hiding, he'll go."
"Likely."
"Voss too?"
Claire smiled slowly.
"Not publicly."
"Then we make him come."
Gabriel studied Mara.
"How?"
"We let Victor win."
Elena understood first.
"You appear at the meeting."
Mara nodded.
"Alone."
Gabriel immediately said, "No."
She looked at him.
"You said you wouldn't decide for me."
"I regret that already."
Mara almost smiled.
"They expect me to run."
"You're wanted for murder."
"Which means Voss will want me captured."
Claire leaned forward.
"Captured, not killed. Not until Sofia's ownership documents are signed over."
Mara nodded.
"So we use that."
Gabriel objected.
"You're proposing walking into a building filled with Victor's men."
"No."
"What would you call it?"
"Going to work."
He stared at her.
She added, "I've dealt with worse customers."
Dennis laughed despite himself.
The plan formed quickly.
Mara would enter Vale Consolidated's headquarters with Claire posing as legal counsel.
Elena would transmit Robert's files to three independent journalists and a federal judge outside Voss's influence.
Gabriel would remain hidden.
If Victor believed Gabriel dead or incapacitated, he would expose more than he otherwise would.
At 8:43 a.m., Mara stood across from the headquarters wearing the only clothes Claire could find on short notice: a dark suit that didn't quite fit and comfortable shoes.
Mara looked at herself in the reflection.
"I miss my apron."
Claire handed her a folder.
"Your apron didn't contain ownership documents worth several hundred million."
"You don't know my apron."
They entered.
Security guards immediately surrounded them.
Mara raised the folder.
"I'm Mara Bell."
Recognition spread.
So did disbelief.
The wanted waitress had walked into one of the most powerful corporate buildings in the city.
"I own thirty-one percent of this company."
A guard touched his earpiece.
"Take us to the boardroom."
Ten minutes later, Mara entered.
Victor Vale sat at the head of the table.
He resembled Gabriel twenty years older.
Same dark eyes.
Same controlled posture.
But colder.
Much colder.
Victor smiled.
"My niece."
"Cousin once removed, technically."
His smile thinned.
"Robert raised you with attitude."
"Robert raised me alive. You seem disappointed."
Board members shifted uncomfortably.
Victor gestured toward a chair.
"Sit."
"No."
"Mara."
"Ms. Bell."
He studied her.
"Very well."
Mara placed the ownership documents on the table.
"I vote against Gabriel Vale's removal."
Victor leaned back.
"Gabriel is dead."
"That's been a popular rumor today."
"He was attacked."
"So was I."
Victor's gaze sharpened.
"Tragic business at the diner."
"Very."
"Three men dead."
"So the news says."
He smiled.
"Do you deny shooting them?"
"I deny killing them."
Victor's eyes flickered.
Tiny.
But Mara saw it.
"You shouldn't have come here."
"Why?"
"Because now I can't protect you."
Mara laughed.
"You're adorable."
Victor's face hardened.
One board member coughed to hide a smile.
Victor leaned closer.
"You don't understand this world."
"No. I understand bullies."
His hand tightened.
Mara continued.
"They're remarkably similar everywhere."
The board secretary announced the vote.
Mara's shares changed the balance.
Gabriel remained chairman.
Victor's attempt failed.
For the first time, genuine anger appeared on his face.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
Police Commissioner Arthur Voss entered with six officers.
"Mara Bell."
She turned.
Voss smiled professionally.
"You're under arrest for three counts of murder."
Claire stepped forward.
"Commissioner, my client—"
Voss pulled back his jacket.
"I have a warrant."
Mara looked at Claire.
This was expected.
Then Voss added something that wasn't.
"And Claire Mercer, you're under arrest for the murder of Robert Bell."
Claire went completely still.
Mara stared at her.
"What?"
Voss dropped a clear evidence bag onto the table.
Inside was an old pistol.
A label identified it as the weapon used to kill Robert.
Claire's fingerprints had been recovered from it.
Mara slowly turned toward the woman who had claimed to be her father's ally.
Claire whispered, "Mara, listen to me."
Voss smiled.
Then Mara noticed Victor.
He wasn't surprised.
He was smiling too.
And beneath the table, Claire slipped something into Mara's hand.
A key.
