Chapter 4 - The Daughter Nobody Knew Existed

Darkness swallowed the room.

Elena chambered the shotgun.

Gabriel pulled Mara behind the kitchen island.

Dennis crawled toward the back door.

Outside, a car engine started.

Then another.

Gabriel whispered, "Victor never comes alone."

Mara held the pistol close to her chest.

Her mind refused to move past the sentence.

Your real mother had the last name Vale.

She looked at Gabriel.

Even in the darkness, she could see his outline.

"Who was she?"

"Not now."

"Wrong answer."

"Mara."

"Who was my mother?"

Glass shattered upstairs.

Elena whispered, "They're inside."

Gabriel moved toward the staircase.

Mara grabbed him.

"You're wounded."

"They'll expect me downstairs."

"Then don't give them what they expect."

Gabriel looked at her.

Despite the chaos, something almost approving passed through his face.

They moved through the pantry into a narrow service corridor.

Elena knew the house better than the attackers.

She led them through a concealed door into the garage.

Dennis started an old sedan.

Bullets struck the garage door as it rose.

Mara ducked.

Gabriel fired back.

They escaped through the side yard and onto another street.

Five minutes later, Elena switched cars at a parking garage.

Twenty minutes after that, they were inside an abandoned printing company owned under one of Gabriel's legitimate businesses.

Only then did Mara ask again.

"My mother."

Gabriel sat on a desk while Elena changed his bandage.

He looked toward Dennis.

Dennis looked away.

Mara understood.

"You all know."

Elena finally spoke.

"Her name was Sofia Vale."

Mara felt something shift beneath her feet.

"Vale."

"Yes."

"How was she related to you?"

Gabriel's face was unreadable.

"My aunt."

Mara stared at him.

"Your aunt."

"My father's youngest sister."

Mara laughed in disbelief.

"So what does that make you?"

"My cousin."

The gun in Mara's hand suddenly felt heavier.

She set it down.

Dennis continued.

"Sofia wanted out of the family business. She met a man, disappeared, and eventually had you."

"Who was my father?"

"We don't know."

"That's convenient."

"It's true."

"Why did Robert take me?"

Elena answered.

"Because Sofia was killed."

The word struck like a bullet.

Mara's face went numb.

"By whom?"

"Victor."

Gabriel's voice was flat.

Certain.

"Why?"

"She knew too much."

Mara stared at the floor.

All these years, she had believed she was a diner waitress whose parents had died.

Now she was related by blood to one of the most feared crime families in the city.

It felt absurd.

Impossible.

And yet the pieces fit too well.

Robert Bell's secrecy.

The security company.

The pistol.

The files.

The way Gabriel's enemies knew her name.

Mara looked up.

"Victor said Gabriel lies."

"Victor lies professionally," Elena said.

"That doesn't answer me."

Gabriel took a slow breath.

"My father knew Sofia had a child. He tried to find you after she died."

"Why?"

"To protect you."

"Or recruit me?"

His face hardened.

"My father had many flaws. Hunting children wasn't one."

Mara folded her arms.

"And Victor?"

"He wanted you found because Sofia left something behind."

"The evidence?"

"Something more valuable."

Dennis opened the metal box again.

"Ownership."

Mara stared.

"Of what?"

Gabriel looked at her.

"Thirty-one percent of the Vale family's legitimate companies."

Mara actually laughed.

"No."

Elena didn't.

"Your grandfather divided his legal holdings between his children. Sofia's share passed to her child."

"I'm a waitress."

"You're also potentially the largest individual shareholder in Vale Consolidated."

Mara sat down.

This had become ridiculous.

"How much?"

Gabriel hesitated.

"Several hundred million."

Mara closed her eyes.

"Of course."

Dennis almost smiled.

"You're taking this surprisingly well."

"No. My brain has simply resigned."

Gabriel laughed softly.

Then winced.

Mara looked at him.

"If this is true, Victor wants me dead for money."

"Partly."

"What else?"

Gabriel's humor vanished.

"Your ownership gives you voting power."

"For what?"

"Removing the chairman."

"Victor."

"Yes."

Mara looked at the flash drive.

"And my father—Robert—was protecting proof."

"Robert discovered Victor had been transferring assets illegally for years," Dennis said. "He created the archive so you could reclaim what belonged to Sofia if you ever needed to."

Mara stared at Robert's frozen face on the laptop.

Her father.

Blood or not.

Her father.

"Can we recover the video?"

Elena nodded.

"Maybe. The file wasn't deleted. Someone interrupted playback."

She began working.

Gabriel's phone rang.

He checked the number.

His expression changed.

"Who?"

"My attorney."

He answered.

"Speak."

A man's voice came through urgently.

"Gabriel, the board is meeting at nine."

"Why?"

"Victor called an emergency vote."

"On what?"

"Your removal."

Gabriel looked at Mara.

"And?"

The attorney hesitated.

"He claims you're dead."

Mara stared.

Gabriel checked the clock.

5:42 a.m.

"How convenient."

"If the board accepts the declaration, Victor assumes control."

Gabriel's face went cold.

"Delay it."

"I can't. He's invoking the succession clause."

Elena stood.

"Unless Sofia's heir appears."

Gabriel looked at Mara.

She laughed.

"Absolutely not."

"Mara—"

"I just learned I'm related to you people twenty minutes ago."

Victor's men were trying to kill her.

Her biological mother had been murdered.

Her adoptive father had died protecting secrets.

And now they wanted her to walk into a corporate boardroom controlled by criminals.

"No."

Gabriel nodded.

"Fair."

Elena stared at him.

"Gabriel."

"I said fair."

Mara looked at him.

"You aren't going to pressure me?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because people have been deciding your life for you since before you could speak."

Something in his tone made her pause.

"I won't be another one."

Mara had expected manipulation.

She had expected a mafia boss to tell her what she owed the family.

Instead, Gabriel leaned back and closed his eyes.

"You saved my life. You're free to leave."

Dennis objected.

"She can't leave."

Gabriel opened his eyes.

"She can do whatever she wants."

"And Victor?"

"I'll handle Victor."

"You can barely stand."

"I'll improvise."

Mara stared at him for a long time.

Then Elena's laptop beeped.

The video had been recovered.

Mara pressed play.

Robert Bell appeared again.

"If Mara is watching this, then I failed."

Her eyes burned.

Robert continued.

"Sofia came to me carrying her daughter. She knew Victor had killed two men who planned to testify against him. She knew she was next."

Mara leaned closer.

"Sofia asked me to take you somewhere no Vale would look. Somewhere ordinary."

A sad smile appeared on Robert's face.

"I chose the life I thought would keep you alive."

Mara wiped her cheek.

Robert looked down for several seconds.

"There's another truth."

Everyone in the room became still.

"The night Sofia died, she wasn't alone."

Robert held up a photograph.

Two women stood beside a car.

One was Sofia.

The other looked younger.

Mara recognized Elena.

Elena stopped breathing.

Robert continued.

"Elena Vale witnessed the murder."

Mara slowly turned toward her.

Elena's face had gone white.

"You were there."

"Mara—"

"You saw my mother die."

Gabriel stood.

"Elena?"

She stepped backward.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I was seventeen."

"Who killed her?"

Elena shook her head.

"No."

"Tell me."

"I can't."

"You just spent hours telling me Victor did it."

"I believed that for years."

Mara moved closer.

"Who pulled the trigger?"

Elena looked at Gabriel.

Then at Mara.

Her lips trembled.

"Gabriel's father."

Silence.

Gabriel's face lost all expression.

"My father?"

Elena nodded.

"But Victor ordered it."

Gabriel turned away.

The revelation hit him almost as hard as Mara.

Elena continued desperately.

"Your father regretted it immediately. Victor threatened us. Threatened Gabriel. Threatened everyone."

Mara looked at Gabriel.

His entire world had shifted too.

For one terrible moment, neither of them knew what to say.

Then Dennis's phone buzzed.

He read the message.

"We have another problem."

Mara almost laughed.

"What now?"

Dennis turned the phone around.

A photograph showed the Blue Lantern Diner surrounded by police.

Across the screen ran a breaking-news headline.

DINER SHOOTING LEAVES THREE DEAD. WAITRESS MARA BELL WANTED FOR QUESTIONING.

Mara stared.

"Three dead?"

"They were alive when we left."

Gabriel's eyes sharpened.

"Victor executed Roman and his men."

Dennis nodded.

"And blamed Mara."

Another alert appeared.

This one included security footage.

Mara firing Gabriel's gun.

No footage of Roman raising his weapon.

No footage of the other attackers.

Only Mara shooting.

The edit made her look like a murderer.

Gabriel swore.

Then the building's freight elevator chimed.

Once.

They all turned.

Elena reached for the shotgun.

Gabriel raised his pistol.

The elevator indicator climbed.

Their floor.

The doors opened.

A woman stood inside wearing an FBI badge.

Mara recognized her from one of Robert Bell's photographs.

Agent Claire Mercer.

The federal investigator who had supposedly died fourteen years ago.

Claire looked directly at Mara.

"Your father asked me to find you if Victor ever discovered the truth."

May you like

She lifted a sealed envelope.

"And this contains the name of the man who actually ordered Sofia Vale's murder."
