Chapter 6 - The Secret Inside The Locked Study

The voice came from the darkness.

"Claire..."

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not because I recognized the person.

Because I recognized the emotion behind it.

Fear.

The person standing in my study was afraid.

And that was impossible.

The study had always been the one place in the villa where I felt safe.

My mother's old books were still there.

My father's handwritten notes were still there.

The documents I inherited were still there.

It was the room where my family kept its secrets.

And now someone had been hiding inside it.

I slowly turned.

The light from the hallway reached the doorway.

A figure stepped forward.

An older man.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

A face I had seen many times in old photographs.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew him.

But I didn't understand how.

"Richard?"

The name left my mouth.

The man stopped.

Everyone behind me became silent.

Grant looked like he had seen a dead person.

Sabrina covered her mouth.

David stepped back.

Because Richard Hart was supposed to be gone.

My father's closest friend.

My mother's business partner.

The man who disappeared shortly after my father's death.

The man everyone believed had abandoned my family when things became difficult.

But he was standing inside my house.

Alive.

Older.

Holding a small box.

"Claire," he whispered.

His eyes filled with emotion.

"I am sorry."

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

Because suddenly the entire story I believed about my family was falling apart.

"You were alive?"

Richard lowered his head.

"Yes."

"Where have you been?"

He looked at Grant.

And that was when I noticed something.

Richard wasn't afraid of me.

He wasn't afraid of David.

He was afraid of Grant.

"What is happening?"

My voice sounded different.

Stronger.

Colder.

"Everyone seems to know the truth except me."

Nobody answered.

That was the worst part.

The silence.

The endless silence from people who had spent years making decisions about my life without telling me.

Richard stepped into the room.

"I wanted to come back sooner."

"Then why didn't you?"

He looked at the floor.

"Because your father made me promise."

I frowned.

"My father?"

Richard nodded.

"The night before he died."

The room became still.

"You spoke to my father?"

"Yes."

"About what?"

Richard looked toward the box in his hands.

"About you."

My chest tightened.

"Me?"

He nodded.

"Your father knew someone was trying to gain control over everything he built."

My eyes moved toward Grant.

He immediately looked away.

Richard noticed.

"He suspected Grant."

Grant's expression changed.

"Be careful what you say."

Richard looked at him.

"You had years to tell her."

Grant stepped forward.

"You disappeared."

Richard's voice became sharper.

"Because you made sure I had no choice."

The accusation hung in the air.

I looked between them.

"What did Grant do?"

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he opened the small box.

Inside was a collection of papers.

Old.

Yellowed.

Carefully preserved.

"My father gave you these?"

Richard nodded.

"He told me if anything happened to him, I was not supposed to give them to you until you were ready."

I almost laughed.

Ready.

Everyone kept saying that.

Ready.

As if I was a child who couldn't handle the truth about my own life.

"I am ready now."

Richard looked at me.

"I know."

He handed me the first document.

I opened it.

The first line made my heart stop.

"Emergency Transfer Agreement."

I looked confused.

"What is this?"

Richard sat down slowly.

"Your father created a protection plan."

"For what?"

"For the possibility that someone inside your family would betray you."

Nobody spoke.

But I didn't need anyone to.

Because I already knew.

I looked at Grant.

His face was emotionless.

Too emotionless.

And that scared me.

"How long?"

Grant looked at me.

"How long what?"

"How long were you planning this?"

His eyes hardened.

"You really believe them?"

I stared at him.

"I believe the documents."

Richard placed another paper on the table.

"This agreement was created eleven years ago."

My breathing slowed.

Eleven years.

One year after my father's death.

Two years before Grant and I started having serious problems.

The timing was not a coincidence.

I turned another page.

Then I saw something.

A signature.

Grant Whitmore.

My hands became cold.

"You signed this."

Grant didn't answer.

"You signed an agreement with my father?"

He finally spoke.

"Claire, you don't understand."

"No."

I looked at him.

"I understand perfectly."

Richard looked at me.

"There is something else."

He removed a small envelope from the box.

"This was hidden in your father's private archive."

I took it.

My name was written on it.

Again.

Claire.

Not my married name.

My father's handwriting.

The same handwriting I had spent years missing.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My father's words.

My eyes moved across the page.

Claire,

If you are reading this, then something happened that I was afraid of.

I stopped.

My throat tightened.

Richard looked away.

Grant looked nervous.

The letter continued.

Do not trust anyone who tells you they protected you.

Protection without honesty is control.

I looked up.

Those words felt like they had been written for tonight.

I continued reading.

There is one person who knows the entire truth.

Someone who stood beside me when everything began.

Someone who helped me build the company.

Someone who later tried to take it away.

My eyes lifted.

I looked around the room.

The answer was obvious.

But I didn't want to believe it.

My father continued.

Claire, if Grant is the reason you found this letter...

My heart stopped.

Then the next sentence appeared.

Do not confront him alone.

I lowered the letter.

Because I understood something.

My father wasn't just warning me.

He was afraid.

David stepped closer.

"Claire."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"There is something you need to see."

He opened his phone.

A security recording appeared.

The date was from three days earlier.

The camera showed my villa.

But not from outside.

From inside.

The angle was from my study.

Someone had installed another camera.

The video showed Grant entering my study.

Alone.

He opened drawers.

Moved books.

Checked documents.

Then he stopped.

He found something.

A hidden compartment behind my father's bookshelf.

My heart dropped.

Because I knew that compartment.

I had never opened it.

Grant removed a small black box.

Then he made a phone call.

The audio was unclear.

But one sentence was obvious.

"I found the last piece."

The video stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Grant.

"What was in the box?"

He said nothing.

"Grant."

Still nothing.

Richard suddenly stood.

"Because the box wasn't empty."

Everyone looked at him.

Richard's face had changed.

He looked terrified.

"What do you mean?"

He reached into the old box he carried.

And removed a photograph.

He placed it on the table.

The picture showed my father.

My mother.

Richard.

And another person.

Someone standing beside them.

Someone I recognized immediately.

Because I had seen him before.

In the video.

In the photograph.

The man with the silver watch.

Richard whispered:

"That man was the person who helped your father build everything."

I stared at the picture.

"Who is he?"

Richard looked at Grant.

Then at me.

And quietly said:

"He was the man your husband has been working with since before you met him."

The lights in the villa suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

Then my phone vibrated.

One new message appeared.

From an unknown number.

A photograph was attached.

It showed my study.

Taken moments earlier.

May you like

And behind me in the picture...

someone was standing.
