Chapter 2 - The Man Who Walked Out Of The Shadows

The study door opened slowly.

Nobody moved.

Not Grant.

Not Sabrina.

Not even me.

Because the person standing there was the last person Grant expected to see inside my home.

David Cole.

Sabrina’s husband.

He stepped into the living room with a calm expression, holding a thick black binder against his chest.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The only sound was the rain hitting the windows.

Grant looked at Sabrina first.

Then at David.

Then back at Sabrina.

His face changed.

Not completely.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

Enough for me to know that he was finally afraid.

"David?"

Sabrina’s voice came out almost like a whisper.

She looked confused.

Terrified.

Like she had just seen a ghost.

David walked forward slowly.

"Hello, Sabrina."

The way he said her name was different from the way a husband would say his wife's name.

There was no anger.

No pain.

Only disappointment.

Grant stepped between them.

"What are you doing here?"

David looked at him.

A small smile appeared on his face.

"Interesting question."

He lifted the black binder slightly.

"Considering I should be asking you the same thing."

Grant’s jaw tightened.

"This is private."

"No."

David looked around the room.

"This stopped being private the moment you brought my wife into another man's home and tried to steal from the legal owner."

Sabrina immediately shook her head.

"David, you don't understand."

I watched her carefully.

Six months ago, she had probably used those exact words on him.

Maybe every time she came home late.

Maybe every time she hid her phone.

Maybe every time she lied.

But David didn't react.

"I understand more than you think."

Grant looked at me.

Then at David.

"You two planned this?"

I almost laughed.

Because even now, even after being exposed, he still believed everything was a game being played against him.

"No, Grant," I said quietly.

"This is not a plan."

I looked at the binder in David's hands.

"This is the truth."

Grant's eyes narrowed.

"You expect me to believe Claire and David Cole were working together?"

David opened the binder.

"I didn't work with Claire."

He removed a document.

"I worked against you."

The room became silent.

Grant stared at the paper.

"What is that?"

David didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the dining table.

He placed the document beside Grant's divorce agreement.

"Your financial records."

Grant's expression changed.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

"You don't have access to my company's records."

David looked at him.

"I didn't need access."

He tapped the document.

"You sent them yourself."

Grant frowned.

"What?"

"You forgot something about investments, Grant."

David looked at Sabrina.

"You became careless when you thought nobody was watching."

Sabrina looked away.

That reaction told me everything.

Grant noticed it too.

His face hardened.

"Sabrina."

She swallowed.

"Grant..."

"No."

His voice became colder.

"You knew about this?"

Sabrina didn't answer.

That was the answer.

Grant took a step back.

For the first time that night, the two people who had walked into my house together were no longer standing on the same side.

They were standing in the middle of a disaster they had created.

David opened another page.

"Six months ago, Whitmore Development started transferring money through several private accounts."

Grant laughed.

A nervous laugh.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

"I do."

David pointed at the numbers.

"Because those accounts were connected to companies that don't exist."

Grant's eyes moved across the page.

His confidence disappeared piece by piece.

"You investigated me?"

"No."

David closed the folder.

"I investigated my wife."

Sabrina looked hurt.

"David..."

He looked at her.

And for the first time, I saw emotion in his face.

Not rage.

Pain.

"You lied to me."

The words were quiet.

But they were heavier than yelling.

Sabrina looked down.

"I was going to tell you."

"When?"

She didn't answer.

David nodded slowly.

"Exactly."

I watched the scene unfold.

The strange thing was that I wasn't enjoying it.

Not really.

After fourteen years with Grant, I had imagined this moment many times.

I imagined screaming.

I imagined breaking something.

I imagined making him feel the pain I felt.

But standing there, watching him lose control, I felt something different.

Relief.

Because for the first time in years, I wasn't the only person who knew the truth.

Grant suddenly turned toward me.

"You knew?"

I didn't respond.

His voice became louder.

"You knew about Sabrina?"

"I knew enough."

"And you said nothing?"

I looked at him.

"You spent six months believing you were hiding something from me."

I paused.

"But you never realized I stopped trusting you long before that."

The words hit harder than I expected.

Grant stared at me.

Because maybe that was the one thing he never considered.

That I had already emotionally left the marriage before he physically left it.

David looked toward me.

"Claire."

I nodded.

"Thank you for coming."

Grant immediately stepped forward.

"Wait."

David ignored him.

"There's something else you need to see."

He opened the binder again.

This time, he removed a small flash drive.

Grant noticed it.

His entire body changed.

"What is that?"

David placed it on the table.

"The reason I came here tonight."

Nobody spoke.

The small device looked ordinary.

Almost meaningless.

But Grant's reaction wasn't ordinary.

He knew something about it.

I noticed.

"What is it, Grant?"

He didn't answer.

"Grant?"

His eyes stayed on the flash drive.

"I don't know."

A lie.

A terrible one.

Because Grant was many things.

Arrogant.

Manipulative.

Careless.

But he was not someone who could hide fear.

Not from me.

Not after fourteen years.

David looked at me.

"Three weeks ago, I discovered something strange."

He turned the flash drive in his hand.

"Someone inside Whitmore Development was preparing to remove certain files before an audit."

Grant crossed his arms.

"You are accusing me of something without proof."

David nodded.

"That's why I brought proof."

He connected the flash drive to the laptop sitting on my dining table.

The screen turned on.

A folder appeared.

No company logo.

No label.

Just one name.

CLAIRE.

My heart stopped.

I looked at David.

"What is that?"

He didn't answer.

He clicked the folder.

Inside were dozens of files.

Documents.

Photographs.

Recordings.

My name appeared everywhere.

Grant looked at the screen.

And for the first time that night...

he looked truly terrified.

"What did you find?"

David stared at the files.

Then he looked at me.

"Claire, before you open these..."

He paused.

"There is something you need to know about your husband."

Grant suddenly moved forward.

"Turn that off."

Nobody moved.

His voice became sharper.

"I said turn it off."

David looked at him.

"Why?"

Grant didn't answer.

Because he couldn't.

Because any answer would expose him.

I walked closer to the laptop.

My hands were steady.

Surprisingly steady.

"Open it."

David clicked the first file.

A video appeared.

The timestamp was from two months earlier.

The room became colder.

Because the person on the screen was Grant.

But he wasn't alone.

He was sitting inside an office I recognized.

My office.

The office I thought only I had access to.

Grant looked directly at the camera.

Then he said something that made my entire body freeze.

"I know Claire will never sign willingly..."

I stared at the screen.

Grant's face went pale.

Because he knew exactly what was coming next.

The video continued.

May you like

And behind Grant, a second person slowly walked into view...

A person I had trusted for years.
