Chapter 5 - The Sister Who Lived In The Shadows

The black SUV stopped at the cemetery gates.

The engine remained running.

Nobody stepped out.

For a few seconds, Adrian and I stood there watching it.

Neither of us spoke.

Because we both knew.

Those people weren't here by accident.

Adrian's face changed.

The fear I had seen earlier returned.

But this time, it was worse.

This wasn't the fear of being exposed.

This was the fear of someone coming for him.

"Michael," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"Who are they?"

He didn't answer.

The SUV doors opened.

Two men stepped out.

They were dressed in black suits.

Not security.

Not police.

Something else.

They moved slowly toward the cemetery entrance.

Like they already knew exactly where we were.

Adrian grabbed my arm.

"We need to leave."

I pulled away.

"No."

His eyes widened.

"What?"

"You have spent twenty years telling me to stop asking questions."

I looked toward the men approaching.

"Not anymore."

"Michael, you don't understand."

"No."

I stepped closer.

"I finally understand."

The men entered the cemetery.

Adrian looked around desperately.

Then he made a decision.

He grabbed my shoulder.

"This way."

For the first time that night, I followed him.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I needed answers.

We moved between the graves as quietly as possible.

The cemetery was old.

The paths were narrow.

The trees provided enough cover to hide.

Behind us, I heard footsteps.

"They know we're here," I whispered.

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"Who are they?"

He didn't look at me.

"The people Isabella was afraid of."

That answer made my blood run cold.

"You knew about them."

"I knew they existed."

"How?"

He stopped walking.

For a moment, he looked like he wanted to tell me everything.

Then he looked away.

"Because Isabella came to me before she disappeared."

I froze.

"You said she died."

"I said she wanted everyone to believe she died."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

His eyes filled with regret.

"Because she made me promise."

I laughed quietly.

A bitter laugh.

"Everyone has a promise."

I looked at him.

"Everyone gets to protect Isabella except me."

The words hurt him.

Good.

They needed to.

Because I had spent twenty years grieving while everyone else carried pieces of the truth.

Adrian lowered his voice.

"She loved you more than anyone."

"Then she should have trusted me."

"She did."

"Then why leave me?"

He didn't answer.

Because he knew the truth.

She didn't leave me.

Someone forced her to disappear.

We reached the edge of the cemetery.

Adrian stopped near an old stone wall.

He pushed aside some vines.

Behind them was a small metal door.

I stared at it.

"What is that?"

"An old maintenance tunnel."

"Where does it go?"

"To the original Bellini property."

The old cabin.

I looked at him.

"You knew about this?"

He nodded.

"I helped Isabella create it."

My anger returned.

"You helped her hide."

"Yes."

"From me."

"No."

He looked directly at me.

"From them."

The footsteps behind us grew louder.

Adrian opened the door.

"Inside."

I hesitated.

For twenty years, Adrian had lied to me.

But for the first time, I wondered if maybe those lies had been the only thing keeping me alive.

We entered the tunnel.

The door closed behind us.

Darkness surrounded us.

Only the sound of our breathing remained.

After a few seconds, Adrian turned on a small flashlight.

The tunnel was old.

Dust covered the walls.

But someone had been using it recently.

There were fresh footprints.

Food supplies.

A blanket.

Someone had been living down here.

I looked at Adrian.

"Isabella?"

He didn't answer.

I already knew.

We continued deeper.

The tunnel opened into a hidden room beneath the old cabin.

A room I had never known existed.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Newspapers.

Everything connected to my sister's disappearance.

And in the center of the room was a wall covered with pictures.

Pictures of my family.

My company.

My life.

I stepped closer.

There were notes written beside each person.

My uncle Victor.

My aunt Clara.

Adrian.

Even me.

My own picture had a note beside it.

I grabbed it.

The handwriting wasn't Isabella's.

It said:

"Subject remains unaware."

I felt my stomach drop.

"What is this?"

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

"I don't know."

"You expect me to believe that?"

He didn't answer.

I searched the room.

Then I found something.

A small recorder.

An old one.

Beside it was a note.

Michael.

If you found this room, it means Adrian finally told you enough.

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Isabella's voice.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

"Michael, if you're hearing this, I'm sorry."

My eyes closed.

For the first time in twenty years, I heard my sister speaking directly to me.

"I know you think I abandoned you."

A pause.

"I know you think I chose to disappear."

My throat tightened.

"But I didn't have a choice."

The recording continued.

"The night I discovered the truth about Bellini Holdings, I realized our family wasn't just hiding money."

Static.

"They were hiding people."

I looked at Adrian.

He looked shocked too.

Even he didn't know.

Isabella continued.

"There was a network inside our company. People who used Bellini Holdings to move illegal money and erase anyone who threatened them."

My breathing became heavier.

"The night of my accident wasn't an accident."

The room went silent.

I grabbed the recorder.

"They tried to kill me."

Adrian looked down.

I could see pain on his face.

Isabella's voice continued.

"I survived because someone helped me."

A pause.

Then:

"But I couldn't come back."

The recording became quieter.

"Because the person who saved me was the same person who betrayed me."

I looked at Adrian.

He looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Before he could answer, the recorder continued.

"Michael, there is something you need to know about Adrian."

My heart stopped.

The room felt smaller.

"He didn't cause my accident."

I released a breath.

Then the next words came.

"But he knows who did."

The recorder clicked.

The message ended.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at Adrian.

The man who had been my brother.

The man who had protected my sister.

The man who had hidden the truth.

"Who was it?" I asked.

His face turned pale.

"I can't tell you."

I stepped closer.

"After everything?"

He looked terrified.

"Michael, if I say the name, they will know we found this room."

"Who?"

He looked at the door.

Not the tunnel.

The door.

Because suddenly, someone was outside.

A slow knock echoed through the hidden room.

One.

Two.

Three.

Adrian backed away.

I had never seen him look that afraid.

"That's impossible."

I stared at him.

"Who is it?"

He didn't answer.

May you like

The handle slowly began to turn.

And then Adrian whispered the name of the person standing outside.
