Chapter 2 - The Recording That Changed Everything

The library door opened wider.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The entire room seemed frozen as I stared into the darkness beyond the doorway.

For a moment, I expected to see a person standing there.

A stranger.

A thief.

Someone trying to frighten us.

But there was nobody.

Only the old library.

The same room where Isabella used to spend hours reading, writing, and planning a future she never got to live.

Then I saw it.

A small object sitting on the wooden table inside.

Another VHS tape.

My stomach tightened.

I walked toward the library slowly.

Behind me, I heard Adrian whisper.

"Michael, don't."

I stopped.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was finally starting to understand something.

Everyone had spent twenty years telling me to stop looking for answers.

But nobody had ever told me why.

I entered the library.

The smell hit me immediately.

Old books.

Dust.

Wood.

And something else.

Something familiar.

My sister's perfume.

It was impossible.

Isabella had been gone for twenty years.

But standing there, staring at that second tape, I felt like she was still somewhere in that room.

Waiting for me to find what she left behind.

I picked up the VHS.

This one was different.

The plastic was cleaner.

The label was newer.

And written across the front were four words.

"For Michael. Watch alone."

My fingers tightened around it.

I turned around.

Every person at the dining table was watching me.

Especially Adrian.

"You knew about this too," I said.

He looked away.

That was his answer.

I walked back into the dining room.

"Everyone leaves."

Nobody moved.

I looked at my family.

"I said everyone leaves."

My uncle Victor stood first.

"Michael, you're letting emotions control you."

I looked at him.

"No."

I held up the tape.

"For twenty years, you controlled the story."

The room went silent.

"You told me Isabella was careless."

I placed the tape on the table.

"You told me she was driving too fast."

I looked at every face around me.

"You told me there was no mystery."

My voice became colder.

"But now I have two tapes from the night she died."

Nobody answered.

Because they couldn't.

The truth was sitting between us.

I watched as my relatives slowly left the room.

One by one.

No arguments.

No excuses.

Just silence.

That frightened me more than anything.

Because people who had nothing to hide usually fought.

People who had secrets disappeared.

Within minutes, only three people remained.

Me.

Adrian.

And Elena.

The maid.

I looked at Elena.

"Did Sophie find this tape in the old room?"

She nodded slowly.

"Yes, sir."

"Why was she there?"

Elena looked uncomfortable.

"She was looking for her stuffed rabbit."

I looked toward the hallway.

The same hallway leading to the storage rooms.

The rooms nobody had entered since Isabella died.

"How long have you known about the tapes?"

Elena's eyes filled with fear.

"I didn't know what was inside."

"That wasn't my question."

She lowered her head.

"I knew Isabella left something."

My heart stopped.

"You knew?"

Elena nodded.

"She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to protect something."

I stepped closer.

"What something?"

Elena looked toward Adrian.

That small movement told me everything.

The tape was not the only secret.

Someone else was involved.

"Elena."

Her voice shook.

"Your sister trusted me because she knew she couldn't trust everyone in this family."

The words hurt more than I expected.

Because they confirmed the thought I had been refusing to accept.

Isabella had been afraid.

And she had been alone.

I looked at Adrian.

"What did you do?"

His face changed.

"What?"

"What did you do the night Isabella died?"

He stared at me.

"I was with everyone else."

"That's not an answer."

"It is the truth."

I walked toward him.

"Then why did you try to take the tape?"

His jaw tightened.

"I was trying to protect you."

I almost laughed.

"Protect me from my own sister's final message?"

He didn't respond.

I grabbed the old VCR from the storage room myself.

Nobody stopped me.

Maybe they knew it was too late.

Maybe they knew the truth was finally coming out.

I placed the first tape inside.

The machine made a clicking sound.

The television screen flickered.

Static filled the room.

For several seconds, nothing appeared.

Then a picture slowly formed.

A room.

A dark room.

The camera angle was strange.

Like someone had hidden it.

I leaned forward.

The date appeared in the corner.

October 12.

Twenty years ago.

The night Isabella died.

My breathing became heavier.

Then she appeared.

My sister.

Alive.

Sitting in that room.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were terrified.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

I hadn't seen her face in years except in photographs.

But this wasn't a memory.

This was real.

This was Isabella.

And she was afraid.

She looked directly into the camera.

Then she spoke.

"If Michael is watching this..."

I stopped breathing.

Her voice filled the room.

"If you found this, it means they failed to destroy it."

Behind me, Adrian whispered something.

A curse.

A fear-filled reaction.

I turned toward him.

He looked like he had just seen a ghost.

I looked back at the screen.

Isabella continued.

"I don't have much time."

She looked over her shoulder.

Someone was outside the room.

Someone was coming.

My sister lowered her voice.

"Michael, listen carefully."

The image shook.

The camera moved.

Then Isabella reached toward the lens.

Like she was trying to hide something.

"There is one person you trust who has been lying to you."

My entire body went cold.

I looked at Adrian.

He looked back at me.

The screen suddenly went black.

The tape had ended.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

I stared at the blank television.

One sentence repeated in my mind.

One person you trust.

I turned slowly toward the room.

Because suddenly, I realized something.

Isabella hadn't been warning me about my family.

She had been warning me about someone closer.

Someone who had been beside me all along.

My phone rang.

The number on the screen was unknown.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a woman's voice whispered:

"Michael... if you want to know who killed Isabella, come to the place where she took her last breath."

The call ended.

A location appeared in a text message.

May you like

My old family cabin.

The same cabin that burned down the night Isabella died.
