Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Accident

Nobody moved.
Bellini looked seventy.
Maybe older.
Elegant.
Calm.
His medical coat was immaculate despite the underground room.
He looked less like a criminal mastermind than a grandfather waiting for dinner.
That made him worse.
Vincent stepped in front of Evelyn.
Bellini smiled.
"Salvatore used to do that."
"Do what?"
"Stand between danger and people he thought belonged to him."
Vincent's voice was cold.
"Evelyn belongs to herself."
Her eyes flicked toward him.
Bellini noticed.
"Growth. How touching."
Adrian stepped forward.
"You ordered the crash."
Bellini's expression barely changed.
"I ordered a conversation."
"The SUV rammed her car."
"Contractors lack finesse."
Evelyn stared at him.
"You almost killed my child."
Bellini looked at her stomach.
"Your child created a complication."
A terrible quiet entered the room.
Vincent moved.
Fast.
Marco caught his arm.
"Boss."
Bellini didn't flinch.
"Still impulsive."
Vincent's face was deadly calm.
"You have five minutes of oxygen left in this room unless you start explaining."
Bellini smiled.
"That sounds like Salvatore."
"Four minutes fifty-five."
Bellini sighed.
"Daniel Hayes was the most annoying honest man I ever met."
Evelyn's fingers curled.
"Don't talk about my father."
"He stole from me."
"He exposed you."
"Perspective."
Bellini glanced at the ledger.
"That book was supposed to disappear seventeen years ago."
"Why didn't it?" Vincent asked.
"Because Michael found it first."
Vincent stared at him.
Bellini continued.
"Your brother had principles. Very inconvenient trait."
"You killed him."
"I gave an order."
Celeste covered her mouth.
Even after seventeen years, hearing it spoken plainly destroyed something.
Adrian stared at Bellini.
"You told me the Morettis killed him."
"I told you what motivated you."
Adrian's face went white.
Bellini looked almost disappointed.
"You were useful when you were angry."
Vincent watched Adrian carefully.
"Now you know."
Adrian said nothing.
Bellini leaned back.
"Daniel took the ledger after Michael was attacked. He understood something neither Salvatore nor Vincent understood."
"What?" Evelyn asked.
"Violence cannot protect evidence forever."
Bellini looked at her.
"So Daniel built legal traps."
The trust.
Inheritance.
Multiple beneficiaries.
Records hidden beneath ordinary estates.
"If I killed him," Bellini continued, "the trust passed forward."
"To me," Evelyn said.
"Eventually."
"And if you killed me?"
Bellini glanced at her abdomen.
"Your unborn child complicated succession."
Vincent's eyes darkened.
"So you tried to erase both."
Bellini smiled thinly.
"Don't romanticize this. It was mathematics."
Evelyn felt something settle inside her.
Not fear.
Disgust.
She looked at the old man and understood that he had spent decades turning human lives into entries on a ledger.
Michael.
Celeste.
Daniel.
Adrian.
Her.
Her baby.
Numbers.
Obstacles.
"Why 317?" she asked.
Bellini's smile faded slightly.
That was the first sign she had surprised him.
"Why put 317 on my ultrasound?"
"I didn't."
Silence.
Vincent studied him.
"You expect us to believe that?"
Bellini looked genuinely irritated.
"I don't write warnings."
Evelyn's mind raced.
If Bellini didn't—
Then someone else had.
Someone who wanted Vincent to notice.
Someone who knew Michael died in room 317.
Someone who wanted the ultrasound connected to the old case.
Celeste whispered, "Daniel."
Evelyn turned.
"My father is dead."
Celeste looked at the ledger.
"His instructions might not be."
Bellini's expression tightened.
Vincent noticed.
"What's wrong, doctor?"
Nothing.
"You're afraid of something."
Bellini stood.
"Take the ledger and spend the next decade convincing prosecutors who are already named inside it to prosecute themselves."
Vincent smiled faintly.
"We don't need them."
Bellini's confidence slipped.
Adrian looked toward the flash drive.
"Federal investigators."
Bellini stared at him.
Adrian removed his phone.
"I sent copies before I came here."
Bellini's face finally changed.
"You stupid boy."
"No."
Adrian looked at Celeste.
"Just late."
A distant alarm sounded.
Marco checked his phone.
"Federal agents entered the building."
Bellini laughed.
"You think federal badges change anything?"
Vincent picked up the ledger.
"They change enough."
Bellini looked at Evelyn.
"You should know something before you celebrate."
Evelyn's stomach tightened.
"What?"
"Adrian didn't simply meet you because of the ledger."
Adrian went still.
"Don't."
Bellini smiled.
"He was instructed to get close to you."
Evelyn looked at Adrian.
"I know."
"Do you know how close?"
"Bellini."
Adrian's voice cracked.
The older man enjoyed it.
"He was supposed to marry you."
Evelyn felt numb.
"I know that too."
Bellini shook his head.
"No. You know he proposed. You don't know why."
Adrian stepped forward.
Vincent blocked him.
Bellini continued.
"Marriage would have given Adrian access to Daniel's estate."
Evelyn stared at Adrian.
"Is that true?"
Adrian closed his eyes.
"At first."
Two words.
At first.
They cut deeper than anything else.
"You were ordered to marry me."
"Yes."
"And you did."
"I proposed."
"Same thing."
"No."
His voice rose.
"It stopped being the same thing."
"When?"
"I don't know."
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
"Convenient."
"It wasn't."
"Did you ever intend to tell me?"
"Yes."
"When? At our wedding? After you found the ledger? After I gave birth?"
Adrian flinched.
Bellini watched them with satisfaction.
Vincent noticed.
"He's dividing us."
Evelyn turned to him.
"He doesn't have to. Adrian already did that."
Adrian looked shattered.
But Evelyn had no room to comfort him.
Not now.
Maybe never.
Bellini reached slowly toward his desk.
Marco raised his weapon.
"Hands."
Bellini stopped.
Then smiled.
"You still haven't asked the important question."
Vincent's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
"Who ordered Evelyn's car followed before I ever knew she was pregnant?"
Silence.
Adrian stared.
"I told you about the pregnancy two days ago."
Bellini nodded.
"The surveillance began five weeks ago."
Evelyn went cold.
Five weeks.
Before Bellini knew.
Before the ultrasound.
"Who?"
Bellini's eyes shifted toward Celeste.
Every face turned.
Celeste looked horrified.
"No."
Bellini smiled.
"Ask her."
Adrian whispered, "Mom?"
Celeste shook her head.
"I didn't."
Bellini said, "Perhaps not directly."
Vincent stepped closer.
"Explain."
"The order came through a shell company tied to the Vale estate."
Celeste's face collapsed.
"That's impossible."
"Is it?"
Marco's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then looked at Vincent.
"We confirmed the company."
"Owner?"
Marco swallowed.
"Celeste Vale."
Adrian stared at his mother.
Celeste backed away.
"I didn't do this."
Evelyn watched her.
Then noticed something.
Celeste wasn't looking at Bellini.
She was looking at the ceiling.
A small camera.
Her fear seemed directed at something beyond the room.
"Someone is watching us," Evelyn said.
Vincent followed her gaze.
Marco moved beneath the camera.
Celeste whispered, "He found me."
"Who?" Adrian asked.
She looked at her son.
Not Bellini.
Not Vincent.
Someone else.
"Your grandfather."
Vincent froze.
"My father is dead."
Celeste's face went white.
"No."
Bellini laughed softly.
Every eye turned to him.
"You really believed Salvatore Moretti died in Sicily?"
Vincent stepped toward Bellini.
The old doctor smiled.
A door behind the shelves clicked.
Then opened.
A cane touched the floor.
Once.
Twice.
An elderly man stepped into the room.
May you like
Vincent stopped breathing.
"Father."
