Chapter 4 - The Child They Tried to Erase

Vincent spun.
Adrian stood near the rear service door.
He looked almost exactly as Evelyn remembered.
Thirty-four.
Brown hair.
Gray eyes.
Expensive charcoal coat.
The face that had once made her feel safe.
Except now she saw something she had missed before.
Michael Moretti in the shape of his jaw.
Vincent saw it too.
For one brutal second, neither man spoke.
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
"You're hurt."
She stared at him.
"You tried to kill me."
His face changed.
"No."
"The SUV."
"That wasn't me."
"You lied about your name."
"Yes."
"You searched my father's things."
"Yes."
"You knew who my father was before we met."
Silence.
Evelyn nodded calmly.
That silence answered enough.
"You used me."
Adrian stepped forward.
Vincent blocked him.
"Stay where you are."
Adrian looked at his uncle.
"So we finally meet."
Vincent's expression was unreadable.
"You have Michael's eyes."
Adrian laughed without humor.
"That's what my mother used to say when she wanted me to forgive her."
Celeste moved into view.
"Adrian."
His face hardened.
"You."
"Please."
"You've had seventeen years of please."
Evelyn watched the family fracture around her.
She should have been terrified.
Instead, clarity settled over her.
"Why are you here?"
Adrian looked at her.
"To get you out."
"From Vincent?"
"From Bellini."
Vincent's eyes narrowed.
"You expect us to believe you?"
"No. I expect Evelyn to remember that I never once hurt her."
"You stalked her medical appointment."
Adrian looked genuinely confused.
"What?"
Vincent showed him the photograph recovered from the abandoned SUV.
Adrian took one look.
His expression shifted.
"That isn't mine."
"Convenient."
"Check the metadata."
"We will."
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
"Samuel knows you're pregnant."
"How?"
"I told him."
The words hit harder than the crash.
Evelyn stared.
Adrian immediately continued.
"I didn't know what he would do."
"You told him?"
"I thought it would buy time."
"For what?"
"To get Daniel's ledger."
Evelyn laughed softly.
Painfully.
"So that's what all of this was."
"No."
"You proposed because of a ledger."
"No."
"You searched my home because of a ledger."
"Yes."
"You told another man about my pregnancy because of a ledger."
Adrian's eyes closed.
"Yes."
Evelyn turned away.
That was worse than if he had screamed.
Vincent spoke.
"What ledger?"
Adrian looked at him.
"The master ledger."
"Never heard of it."
"Your father did."
Celeste whispered, "Daniel kept it."
Adrian nodded.
"It records twenty-five years of Bellini's transactions. Judges. Contractors. Police commanders. Politicians. Everything."
Vincent's voice remained calm.
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Then why target Evelyn?"
"Because Daniel encoded the location in something he left to her."
Evelyn looked at him.
"What?"
"I don't know."
"You keep saying that."
Adrian almost smiled sadly.
"Now you know how it feels."
Vincent took one step toward him.
"Careful."
Adrian looked at his uncle.
"Or what? You'll kill Michael's son?"
Celeste cried, "Stop."
Neither man looked at her.
Evelyn did.
The older woman was trembling.
Evelyn understood suddenly that everyone in the room had spent years living under somebody else's secrets.
Enough.
"Everybody stop."
They did.
Maybe because she was injured.
Maybe because she was pregnant.
Maybe because she was the only person in the room who wasn't carrying a weapon or seventeen years of revenge.
Evelyn looked at Adrian.
"Did you love me?"
He inhaled.
"Yes."
"Before or after you learned who my father was?"
He said nothing.
She nodded once.
"That's what I thought."
"Evelyn."
"No."
She looked at Vincent.
"And you."
His eyebrows lifted slightly.
"You don't own me because my baby is related to you."
"I never said I did."
"You said I was your war."
"I said the ultrasound made you my war."
"Same problem."
Vincent accepted the correction.
"What do you want?"
The question surprised everyone.
Evelyn looked at each of them.
"I want the truth."
Adrian reached inside his coat.
Vincent's hand moved instantly.
"It's a flash drive."
"Slow."
Adrian withdrew a small metal drive.
He placed it on the table.
"Bellini keeps copies of communications. I took them."
Vincent didn't touch it.
"Why?"
"Because I finally realized he ordered the crash."
Evelyn stared.
"You said you told him about the pregnancy."
"I did. He asked whether you had opened Daniel's boxes. I said no."
"And then?"
"He said the pregnancy changed everything."
Vincent's eyes sharpened.
"Why?"
Adrian looked at Evelyn's ultrasound.
"Because he thinks Daniel transferred something to the baby."
Evelyn stared.
"That's insane."
"Not literally."
Adrian looked at her.
"Through inheritance."
She frowned.
"My father left me almost nothing."
"Publicly."
Celeste suddenly understood.
"The trust."
Everyone turned.
"What trust?" Evelyn asked.
Celeste looked at Vincent.
"Michael created a trust before he died."
"For Adrian?"
"Yes. But there was a condition."
"What condition?"
"Daniel was trustee."
Adrian nodded bitterly.
"And he never gave it to me."
Celeste shook her head.
"He couldn't."
"Why?"
"Because you weren't supposed to receive it until you proved Bellini had no influence over you."
Adrian stared at her.
"What?"
Celeste's eyes filled.
"Michael knew Bellini might find us. He made Daniel promise."
Adrian's anger cracked.
For the first time, he looked like a boy who had spent half his life hating the wrong person.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because when you found Bellini, you stopped listening."
Adrian looked away.
Vincent asked, "Where does Evelyn fit?"
Celeste whispered, "If Daniel died before releasing the trust, control passed to his legal heir."
Evelyn froze.
"Me."
"Yes."
Adrian closed his eyes.
Evelyn suddenly understood.
Her.
Her father.
The boxes.
The engagement.
The pregnancy.
Bellini wasn't worried about a baby inheriting money.
He was worried about Evelyn becoming permanent family to Adrian and unknowingly controlling a trust tied to evidence.
"How much?"
Vincent asked.
Celeste answered.
"Financially? About eighty million."
Evelyn nearly laughed.
"I have twelve thousand dollars in savings."
Vincent ignored that.
"What else is in the trust?"
Celeste looked at the flash drive.
"Michael's evidence."
Silence.
The master ledger.
Names.
Transactions.
Proof.
Adrian sat down.
For the first time since entering, he looked exhausted.
"I thought Daniel stole my inheritance."
Celeste shook her head.
"He protected it."
"And Evelyn?"
"He never planned for you to fall in love with her."
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
That sentence hurt because part of it might have been true.
Whatever the beginning had been, something real had existed.
But real feelings did not erase calculated lies.
Evelyn touched her abdomen.
"My child has nothing to do with your trust."
"No," Adrian said quietly. "But legally, if anything happens to me after acknowledging paternity, my heir gains certain rights."
Vincent swore under his breath.
Bellini had not wanted Evelyn dead because she was pregnant.
He wanted the unborn child erased because the child could inherit Adrian's claim.
The baby was a legal bridge to evidence Bellini had spent seventeen years burying.
Evelyn's skin went cold.
The doors outside slammed.
Marco entered.
"Boss, we have movement downstairs."
"Bellini?"
"His security."
"How many?"
"Too many for a hospital visit."
Vincent looked at Evelyn.
"We leave now."
Adrian stood.
"There's a tunnel beneath the east garage."
Vincent looked at him.
"How do you know?"
"Bellini uses it when he doesn't want cameras."
Vincent hated trusting him.
Evelyn could see it.
But seconds later they were moving.
Private service elevator.
Basement corridor.
Evelyn in a wheelchair because walking was impossible.
Vincent pushed it himself.
Adrian walked ahead with Marco.
Celeste stayed beside Evelyn.
"You should hate me," Celeste whispered.
"I barely know you."
"For what my son did."
"That's his responsibility."
Celeste looked at her.
"You sound like Daniel."
Evelyn swallowed.
The corridor ended at a steel door.
Adrian entered a code.
Nothing.
Again.
Red light.
"Changed."
Behind them came footsteps.
Many.
Vincent turned.
"Marco."
His men formed a line.
Adrian searched the keypad.
"There may be a manual release."
Evelyn noticed a small scratched plate beside the door.
Three numbers.
Her heart stopped.
"Wait."
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed.
Adrian entered 317.
The lock clicked.
The steel door opened.
Beyond it was not a tunnel.
It was a hidden room.
Shelves.
Boxes.
Old medical files.
And one desk.
On the desk sat a leather ledger.
Vincent stared.
Evelyn felt Celeste grip the wheelchair.
Then a lamp switched on by itself.
A man was already sitting behind the desk.
Silver hair.
White medical coat.
May you like
Samuel Bellini smiled.
"I was wondering which one of you would find it first."
