Chapter 6 - The Brother Beside Him

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus stared at his own signature.

“That isn't mine.”

Adrian's voice was almost calm.

“You were at the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“You were secretly meeting Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Your name is on the payment that financed my son's kidnapping.”

“For God's sake, Adrian, look at me.”

“I am.”

“I didn't sign that.”

Daniel pulled out another sheet.

“Then prove it.”

Marcus grabbed the document.

He studied the signature.

“It looks perfect.”

Torres asked, “Who has access to your digital authorization?”

“My assistant. Finance. Adrian. Evelyn.”

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

“Evelyn?”

“She manages the family office. She has emergency authority.”

Daniel nodded.

“That was how she operated for years. Real signatures when possible. Replicated signatures when necessary.”

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“I swear to you.”

Adrian said nothing.

Then his phone rang.

Claire.

He answered immediately.

“Are you safe?”

Her voice was shaking.

“Evelyn is here.”

Adrian went cold.

“Where?”

“At the hospital.”

“Get away from her.”

“She brought lawyers.”

“What?”

“She says she's filing for emergency guardianship of Noah.”

Adrian stared at Torres.

“On what grounds?”

“That you're unstable and endangered him by interfering with the investigation.”

Daniel cursed.

“She knows we're here.”

Claire continued.

“She also says Monica abducted Noah.”

“What?”

“There are reporters downstairs. Evelyn is telling them Monica found the baby Friday, not Monday, and hid him for money.”

Adrian's rage became focused.

It was not enough to kill Noah.

Evelyn intended to destroy the people who saved him.

“Lock the door.”

“Adrian—”

“Do not let her near Noah.”

He ended the call.

Torres was already moving.

“We go now.”

Daniel grabbed her arm.

“She expects that.”

Torres pulled free.

“She’s attempting to take custody of an infant connected to an active kidnapping investigation.”

“She wants you distracted.”

“With what?”

Daniel looked at the ledger.

“This.”

He turned to the final page.

A scheduled transfer.

Midnight.

Every frozen family trust connected to Jonathan Vale was about to be liquidated into an offshore holding company.

Emily and Grace's inheritance.

“Once the money moves,” Daniel said, “the paper trail disappears.”

Adrian looked at the clock.

10:41 p.m.

“Stop the transfer.”

“We need the original trust authorization.”

“Where?”

“Vale Tower.”

Marcus understood.

“Evelyn's office.”

Torres called her financial crimes unit.

Adrian called corporate security.

Nobody answered.

He called again.

Still nothing.

Marcus tried his own access.

Account disabled.

Daniel looked unsurprised.

“She controls the tower.”

Adrian picked up his coat.

“Not for long.”

Vale Tower rose fifty-eight floors above downtown.

When Adrian arrived, most exterior lights were dark.

The lobby doors were locked.

His access card failed.

Marcus tried.

Nothing.

Daniel looked toward the underground garage.

“Old security entrance.”

They entered through a maintenance corridor.

Torres had officers on the way, but Evelyn had already used Adrian's authority to restrict police access without a warrant.

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“She used my own company against me.”

“Your father's company,” Daniel said.

“Not anymore.”

They reached the executive floor.

Evelyn's office door was open.

Nobody inside.

Computer gone.

Files cleared.

Marcus searched the desk.

“Nothing.”

Daniel moved to a painting behind the chair.

He lifted it.

A wall safe.

Adrian entered his father's old code.

Rejected.

Marcus tried Evelyn's birthday.

Rejected.

Daniel entered:

The safe opened.

Inside sat a red folder.

A passport.

Cash.

And a handwritten letter.

Adrian opened the folder first.

ORIGINAL TRUST — JONATHAN VALE DESCENDANTS.

There it was.

Emily Reyes.

Grace Reyes.

Beneficiaries.

Current value:

$94,870,221.

Marcus whistled softly.

Adrian barely reacted.

The money mattered because it had been stolen.

But all he could see were two little girls dividing bruised apples behind a supermarket.

Daniel checked the transfer paperwork.

“With this we can stop liquidation.”

Torres called the court liaison.

Then Adrian saw the letter.

It was addressed to him.

ADRIAN.

He opened it.

The handwriting belonged to his father.

If you are reading this, I failed to finish what I started.

Evelyn knows Jonathan survived.

She knows he had children.

She believes the Vale family is strongest when inheritance remains concentrated.

She will tell herself everything she does protects the family.

Do not believe her.

Protect the children she calls inconvenient.

They are Vales whether they carry the name or not.

Adrian lowered the letter.

Marcus looked away.

Daniel whispered, “Edward knew she might move eventually.”

“Then why stay married to her?”

“Because he was collecting evidence.”

“Until he died.”

Daniel nodded.

Adrian stared at him.

“My father's heart attack.”

Daniel said nothing.

The answer existed in the silence.

Torres looked up from her phone.

“The transfer is frozen.”

One victory.

Then Claire called again.

Adrian answered.

He heard screaming in the background.

“Claire?”

“She's gone.”

“Who?”

“Evelyn.”

“Good.”

“No, Adrian.”

Claire was crying.

“She took Emily.”

The world stopped.

“What?”

“Grace went to the bathroom. Monica was talking to police. Emily saw someone pushing Noah's bassinet toward the elevator and followed.”

Adrian couldn't breathe.

“Is Noah gone too?”

“No. Security stopped the bassinet. It was empty.”

A decoy.

“Where is Emily?”

“We don't know.”

Monica's voice came through the phone.

“Find my daughter!”

Adrian closed his eyes.

He had promised nothing to Monica.

Yet he felt as if he had broken something sacred.

“I will.”

Daniel was already checking Evelyn's passport.

“Private airfield.”

Marcus looked at him.

“What?”

“She keeps a charter account at Essex Field.”

Adrian moved.

Torres blocked the door.

“We do this with police.”

“Then tell them to keep up.”

At Essex Field, Evelyn Vale stood beside a waiting private jet.

Emily sat inside a black SUV nearby.

She was not tied.

That almost made it worse.

Evelyn had given her hot chocolate.

Emily refused to drink it.

“You're Noah's grandmother?” she asked.

“Technically.”

“Then why did you try to take him?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Adults make complicated decisions.”

“Bad decisions?”

“You're very direct.”

“My mom says lying gets worse if you decorate it.”

For the first time, Evelyn's smile disappeared.

Emily looked through the tinted window.

“Where are we going?”

“Somewhere safe.”

“My mom doesn't know.”

“She will.”

“I want Grace.”

Evelyn studied her.

“You two really are Jonathan's daughters.”

Emily frowned.

“You knew my dad?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

That caught Evelyn off guard.

Emily leaned forward.

“My mom said he disappeared.”

Evelyn looked toward the jet.

“Your father caused a great deal of trouble.”

“Where is he?”

“You'll understand when you're older.”

“No.”

Emily's voice shook.

“I want to understand now.”

Headlights appeared at the far gate.

Evelyn's assistant rushed toward the SUV.

“We have to go.”

Police vehicles followed.

Evelyn opened the door.

“Come.”

Emily pulled away.

“No.”

Evelyn grabbed her wrist.

Emily screamed.

Adrian heard it before his car fully stopped.

He ran.

“EMILY!”

She turned.

Evelyn froze.

Torres and officers spread across the tarmac.

“Release the child!”

Evelyn backed toward the jet.

She held no weapon.

Adrian realized that instantly.

All her power had always depended on everyone believing she controlled the room.

Now she did not.

Emily yanked her hand free.

She ran.

Adrian dropped to one knee and caught her.

“My mom!”

“She’s safe.”

“Grace?”

“Safe.”

“Noah?”

“Safe.”

Only then did Emily cry.

Not loudly.

She buried her face against Adrian's coat.

He lifted her.

Across the tarmac, Torres handcuffed Evelyn.

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“You have no idea what I protected you from.”

Adrian held Emily tighter.

“You tried to murder my son.”

“I preserved your inheritance.”

“He is my inheritance.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“You sound like your father.”

“I hope so.”

Officers led her away.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“Where?”

Adrian watched him.

“Who is it?”

Daniel ended the call.

“The police ran the old fingerprints from Jonathan's records.”

“And?”

“They found a match.”

Monica had just arrived in another police vehicle with Grace.

She heard the name.

Her face went white.

Daniel looked directly at her.

“Jonathan Vale is alive.”

Monica stopped.

“Where?”

Daniel's answer came slowly.

“He's been using another name for six years.”

Adrian's phone buzzed with the file.

He opened it.

A photograph loaded.

Emily leaned over his arm.

She stared at the man's face.

May you like

Then whispered:

“I know him.”
