Chapter 5 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Adrian drove to property 317 with Torres and four officers.
He wanted twice as many.
Torres wanted him nowhere near the building.
Neither got what they wanted.
Marcus stood alone beneath a loading dock light when they arrived.
His hands were visible.
“Where is Daniel?” Adrian demanded.
Marcus pointed inside.
“He contacted me.”
“Why you?”
“Because he didn't trust you.”
Adrian almost laughed.
“That's convenient.”
Marcus's expression hardened.
“You think I took Noah.”
“Were you at St. Catherine's before he disappeared?”
Marcus said nothing.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Answer me.”
“Yes.”
Claire had been right.
The attacker had been right.
Adrian's stomach tightened.
“Why?”
Marcus looked toward Torres.
“Not here.”
“Here is exactly where.”
“I went because Daniel told me Noah was in danger.”
Adrian stopped.
“You were talking to Daniel?”
“For two years.”
“And you never told me?”
“He made me promise.”
“Why?”
“Because someone inside the family was monitoring you.”
Adrian grabbed his brother's coat.
“My son was stolen.”
Torres stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Marcus did not resist.
“He told me someone would move against Noah after he was born. I thought he was paranoid.”
“You went to the hospital.”
“I checked security.”
“And then?”
“I left.”
“Three hours later my son disappeared.”
“Yes.”
Adrian's voice dropped.
“And you kept quiet.”
“Because if I told you Daniel was alive, whoever was watching would know too.”
Adrian released him.
“You'd better pray he's inside.”
They entered.
Daniel Mercer waited in office 317-B.
He was sixty-two.
Thin.
Gray-haired.
A scar crossed his temple.
But he was unmistakably the man from Monica's photograph.
Adrian stared.
“You let everyone think you were dead.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No. Your father let everyone think I left the country. The people hunting me let everyone else assume whatever they wanted.”
“Who was hunting you?”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Then Torres.
“Close the door.”
Nobody moved.
Daniel sighed.
“Fine.”
He opened a metal case.
Inside were documents, flash drives, photographs, and a small digital recorder.
“Edward Vale discovered something eighteen years ago.”
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“About Jonathan?”
Daniel nodded.
“Jonathan's death was staged.”
“By who?”
“Jonathan himself.”
Adrian frowned.
Daniel continued.
“He discovered someone was manipulating family trusts. Your grandfather created separate inheritance protections for every direct descendant. Jonathan was entitled to a share larger than several senior executives wanted known.”
“Why?”
“Because Samuel Vale wasn't merely your grandfather's younger son. He controlled voting rights that would pass through Jonathan.”
Marcus leaned against the desk.
“So somebody wanted Jonathan legally dead.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“Your father discovered the fraud.”
Adrian's pulse quickened.
“Did he stop it?”
“He tried.”
“What happened?”
“He was threatened.”
“My father wasn't afraid of anyone.”
“Everyone is afraid when their children become targets.”
Adrian went silent.
Daniel pushed forward a file.
Photographs showed Adrian at seventeen.
Marcus at fifteen.
School.
Sports fields.
Outside their house.
Surveillance.
“Those were delivered to Edward.”
Adrian stared.
“Who sent them?”
“The man stealing from the family.”
“Name him.”
Daniel hesitated.
“Not yet.”
Adrian slammed the file shut.
“You don't get to play games.”
“I spent six years running because I tried not to.”
“Then speak.”
Daniel looked at Torres.
“I need protection for Monica and the girls.”
“They have it.”
“Not enough.”
“Why?”
“Because Emily and Grace aren't simply distant relatives.”
Adrian felt the temperature drop.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel removed another document.
“Jonathan Vale came to me six years ago. He told me Monica was pregnant.”
Adrian listened.
“He knew people were still watching him. He planned to disappear again before the twins were born.”
“Why abandon Monica?”
“He didn't.”
Monica's belief that Jonah had simply vanished had been wrong.
Daniel continued.
“He was taken.”
“By who?”
“The same network that had been manipulating Vale assets.”
“Was he killed?”
“I don't know.”
Adrian looked at the DNA report.
“My father tested the girls.”
“Yes.”
“Without Monica's permission.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To confirm Jonathan had heirs.”
“And then did nothing.”
Daniel shook his head.
“He created a protected trust.”
Marcus looked surprised.
“How much?”
“Originally, seventy million dollars.”
Adrian stared.
“Where is it?”
“Frozen.”
“By whom?”
“Someone challenged Jonathan's identity and the twins' legitimacy before the trust activated.”
Adrian understood.
“The person inside the family.”
“Yes.”
“So Emily and Grace have been living in a shack while seventy million dollars sits frozen.”
Daniel's face tightened.
“Edward died before he could fix it.”
Adrian thought of the girls placing hospital crackers into their pockets for later.
Anger rose like heat.
“Who did this?”
Daniel opened the digital recorder.
“Before I answer that, you need to understand Noah.”
Adrian's patience snapped.
“My infant son spent three days in a cardboard box. I understand enough.”
“No. You don't.”
Daniel pressed play.
A woman's voice filled the room.
Distorted by noise.
“I have the baby. The hospital team changed the plan.”
Adrian leaned forward.
Another voice answered.
Male.
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
“Take him to the market.”
“Why?”
“Because the twins search there every Monday morning.”
Adrian's heart stopped.
Daniel paused the recording.
“Who is that woman?” Torres asked.
“A nurse named Rebecca Sloan. Eric Sloan's sister.”
“The fake nurse?”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
“Missing.”
Adrian pointed to the recorder.
“Who gave the order to take Noah to Benson?”
“Me.”
Nobody moved.
Marcus whispered, “Daniel.”
Adrian crossed the room.
Torres caught him before he reached Daniel.
“You kidnapped my son?”
“No.”
“You just admitted—”
“I rerouted him.”
“From where?”
Daniel's eyes filled with something close to shame.
“From the person who ordered him killed.”
Silence.
Adrian stopped struggling.
“What?”
“The original plan wasn't ransom.”
Daniel's voice became quieter.
“Noah was supposed to disappear permanently.”
Adrian felt physically ill.
“Rebecca contacted me after the abduction. She'd been hired believing it was a custody extraction. When she realized what the second team intended, she panicked.”
“So you told her to put a newborn behind a supermarket?”
“I told her Monica would find him.”
“Monica wasn't there.”
“I knew the twins' routine.”
Adrian stared at him with disgust.
“They are five years old.”
“I know.”
“He could have died.”
“Yes.”
“Why not take him to police?”
“Because I didn't know which officers were compromised. I needed the baby somewhere the kidnappers wouldn't expect but somewhere I knew someone compassionate would find him quickly.”
“You gambled my son's life on two five-year-olds.”
Daniel looked at him.
“And they saved him.”
Adrian wanted to hit him.
He also knew the statement was true.
Torres asked the critical question.
“Who ordered Noah killed?”
Daniel walked toward the steel cabinet.
“The answer is in the account ledger.”
He entered a combination.
The cabinet clicked.
Inside was a thick black binder.
Daniel opened it.
Payments.
Shell companies.
Offshore transfers.
Years of them.
One name repeatedly authorized movements.
Adrian recognized the signature.
He stared.
“No.”
Marcus moved closer.
“What?”
Adrian looked at him.
The signature belonged to someone trusted enough to sit beside his father during family dinners.
Someone who had attended Adrian's wedding.
Someone who had held Noah less than an hour after his birth.
“That's impossible.”
Daniel's voice was grim.
“It isn't.”
Adrian looked again.
Evelyn Vale.
His father's second wife.
His stepmother.
Marcus whispered, “Evelyn?”
Daniel nodded.
“She controlled Edward's private office during his final years. She buried Jonathan's claim. She froze the twins' trust. And when Noah was born, she realized another direct heir made her position weaker.”
Adrian struggled to process it.
“Evelyn loves Noah.”
Daniel gave him a sad look.
“She loves what people think she is.”
Torres reached for the binder.
Daniel stopped her.
“There’s more.”
“What?”
“Evelyn didn't build this alone.”
Adrian's face tightened.
“Who?”
Daniel turned several pages.
A second authorization signature appeared beside hers.
The ink was recent.
Very recent.
Marcus saw it.
His face went white.
Adrian followed his gaze.
The name had been signed only four days ago.
May you like
The day before Noah's kidnapping.
MARCUS VALE.
